Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 11, 2002 Nirvana, first of all. Popularity and record sales are almost entirely a result of good marketing. It has nothing to do with talent--and the level of talent that any of these teen idol stars possess is debatable, given that their studio work is all gloss and that they're never put in a position live where they could conceivably look bad due to total choreography. No matter how bad something is, it can sell millions of copies if the mainstream music congolomerate wills it do so. That's basically just a result of the general public's lack of intellectual curiousity and the fact that everyone who isn't completely secluded is bombarded with this crap on a daily basis. I don't give a fuck about mainstream rock right now, but I can tell Puddle of Mudd from Disturbed because there's no getting away from either of them. That's how you sell millions of albums. The whole grunge thing in the early-to-mid 90s happened because the mainstream music industry got behind a band that was selling unexpectedly well and gave an enormous push to a lot of similar bands to create the illusion that a "movement" was occuring. That's marketing and that's how you sell records. Talent is hardly required. That said, Kurt Cobain was talented. He was a much better vocalist than most people give him credit for (listen to the Unplugged album for evidence of that) and was a considerably better lyricist than anyone operating in mainstream rock today that's compared to him. Eddie Vedder is talented, too. I just don't like his band any.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Well I personally like Pearl Jam more. I think their songs aren't as well-written, although I think they're still more talented musicians, and that Eddie's voice owns Kurt(who has lots of range as well btw). On top of this, Ten was the first real rock album I heard in my life, and that's what got me into trying to absorb as much good music as possible, not just the crap that you see on TV or the radio. Pearl Jam was pretty popular admittedly, but that's neither here nor there. I guess you can say "it's the match that helped me make the transformation from a mark into a 'smark'". It's all good. Agreed. Have you guys heard the 'new' Nirvana song 'You know your right'? I have yet to hear a song that does the job of making Kurt sound like a record in a CD player any better than that, the song is mainly Kurt just droning in and out, with no direction or force. However it is stupid to judge Kurt's talent on a song he obviously wrote and performed close to his demise, as he was obviously quite emotionally disturbed, more so than normal, at the time. Listening to Pearl Jam live, i've found that Eddie has one of those voices that he can reproduce from his studio recordings, in other words he sounds almost the same live as he does on his albums. I have never heard Nirvana Unplugged, so unfortunately i cannot discuss how Kurt was live. In any event, i'm with Virtue, Eddie owns Kurt in terms of vocal ability and i believe the band backing Mr. Vedder is far too under-rated. Illusion
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 12, 2002 Cobain didn't have what I'd consider a technically great voice, but it was perfect for raw and emotional rock music. Not everyone can do that screamy thing well. For instance, I sing like Leonard Cohen and any attempt to scream is so horribly off-key and grating that it couldn't possibly appeal to anyone. Elvis Costello can't scream. John Lennon could scream. It's a talent.

Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted November 12, 2002 On behalf of all Canadian GNR fans, I'd like to offer to give that pompous douchebag something to scream about. Was it entirely his fault? I'm pretty positive his plane had a technical malfunction or something... Besides, people riot due to many things, not just one thing. Obviously those people were pissed about more than just Axl not being able to make it. I've never been to Canada, or know what the people are like over there so i wouldn't know. But mistakes happen, and if Axl did have plane issues, its just something that can't be helped. He COULD do another show there though. Buckethead and the rest of the gang were all there though as far as i know, and noticably disheartend when the show was called off. Buckethead rules, btw. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 12, 2002 I'm neither Canadian nor a fan of Guns N Roses, so I don't know. I hear that Canadian is full of soccer hooligans who jump at any opportunity to riot and fuck shit up, however. You ever talk to that Tim Moysey guy here? He seems nice for a while but if you upset him even slightly he'll punch your girlfriend in the face and light your car on fire. True story. Canada is an angry country. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted November 12, 2002 It's just one of those things. You're Canadian, I know your name, the whole thing was begging for a joke...I couldn't help myself. Please don't hurt me.
