Guest Army Eye Report post Posted March 3, 2002 Chat seems like a good idea. All the 'word association' junk is much more appropriate for a chat room than a message board. If you're talking about having an IRC channel, and just having a gateway to it on the web site, then it wouldn't slow the board down at all. Hell, even if you had a normal Java chat, hosted on the same machine, I doubt it would affect the board at all. The bandwidth used for a chat room is very very low. The board can get bogged down because of all the images being sent, and more importantly it's constantly accessing and writing to the database. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

While I'm inclined to agree that the java applet isn't necessary, saying people are "too dumb to contribute" just because they don't own IRC is ridiculous. Some people just don't like MIRC, I used to be one of them. Unless you have particular rooms you enjoy, you end up in chats with 200 people who are all saying nothing. And I almost never chat with IRC. I mainly use it to assist in the gathering of pirated material. There's several channels where you can download full length matches and even full length shows, of all eras and styles. It'd be really cool if the queues weren't insanely long. And it's not that difficult to goto www.mirc.com, download mIRC, and then connect to the Smarks chatroom. People without that level of computer sophisitication are either the elderly, small children or none too bright. But I was a bit harsh with my previous assessment, I'll admit. And isn't there already a #thesmarks channel? I remember somebody brought this up on the old board, and Scott gave someone permission to do it, albeit as an unofficial channel. Would anyone be intreseted in that side of having the IRC part? i'am sure we ould find 1-3 people here willing to help people download etc, if there dumb like the post above says. the servers wouldn't be hosted by thesmarks, lol, we have enough on our servers as it is. anyone be willing to donate servers for that? or donate clips etc? Can anyone help there? You weren't kidding about the long queues. But it's not even the queues that bother me as much as how most of these guys have the files chopped up into a billion small pieces.
