Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 8, 2002 I've noticed some people mention Tom Morello. For all the bizarre sounds he can get out of his guitar, his playing is absolutely soulless. Lou Reed got some props, too, but I don't think he's that great. His VU bandmate Sterling Morrison was much better.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 8, 2002 Totally agreed on Morello. He's got some fun riffs, but it never sounds like there's a whole lot of feeling behind it.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted November 8, 2002 Also, no one's mentioned Vernon Reid. That's a damn shame.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 no one mentioned Peter Frampton...... excellent guitarist

Guest converge241 Report post Posted November 8, 2002 OMG WHERE THE HELL IS JOE SATRIANI WHILE WE ARE AT IT!!!
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted November 8, 2002 Gotta mention Chet Atkins. He's country but he's a great guitarist. Jimmy Page was my choice on the list.
Guest TheyCallMeMark Report post Posted November 9, 2002 Probably Andres Segovia. None of the guitarists on the list could likely play any of his more difficult works. But I suppose he goes under the column of "classical guitarists no one has heard of". As far as popular guys go I might say Hammet, Gilmour but more likely Santana. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted November 9, 2002 Al Di Moea is also a good choice
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 9, 2002 You've mentioned him a couple times. Who does he play for? Or is he another solo guitar god?
Guest Coffin Surfer Report post Posted November 9, 2002 I'am surprised Television's Tom Verlanie doesn't get mentioned that much in greatest gutiarst polls. Sure he used a rythym gutiarist, he wasn't a shredder, and he didn't play metal but he was still a bad ass that wrote innovative riffs, great fucking solos, and possibly some of the greatest leads ever. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2002 James Satriani, or Slav Simanic. Big props to anyone who's heard of the latter.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted November 10, 2002 Hmmmm... From this list I picked Jimi Hendrix, although I'll admit his non-blues songs/solos don't wow me the way they used to, he's still one of my favorite guitarists and he's really, really good. However, I think most of his reputation is just that - a reputation. People automatically associate Jimi Hendrix with greatest guitar player even though its not necessarily true. Jimmy Page... why is he even on the list? If he wasn't in Led Zeppelin, nobody would care who he is. Most of his "great riffs/solos" involve him running through the pentatonic scale. Even I can do that (if I still played guitar, that is). Stevie Ray Vaughn is another one of my favorites, but especially as a blues guitar player, he's only average. Anyone else notice most of his "best songs" are cover songs? Maybe if he'd performed more great solos that weren't ripped off somebody else's back catalogue I'd like him even more. Eddie Van Halen - Eddie! Eddie! I've never heard anyone finger-tap better. That's really all he does better or special, but then again I really like the sound of finger-tapping. At least I think that's what that's called, if I'm making another dumb mistake please correct me. David Gilmour - This is the Queen guy, right? I'm probably just listening to the wrong Queen songs, but most of the ones I know don't even really focus on the guitar at all. Kirk Hammett - I like Master of Puppets... but other than that, my usual anti-Metallica bias prevents me from giving a fair response. Steve Vai - I always hear about this guy, but I've never heard any of his material. Any recommendations? Slash - The best thing about Guns 'N Roses. I'd still probably like some of their songs if it weren't for him, but instead of being "OMG~! GNR~!" they'd just be throw-away "eh, I won't change the channel if it comes on the radio" bands like Motley Crue. Dimebag Darrel - I don't know a whole lot of Pantera, but the guy's not bad. He has no business being on a "best guitarist" list though. Rhandy Rhodes - From what I've heard, the only thing Zakk Wylde's got on the guy is that he's still breathing. Awesome guitarist that makes me like Ozzy's early solo material better than a lot of Sabbath stuff (here's where my ignorance comes into play and it turns out Rhodes was in Sabbath the whole time). Joe Satriani - This guy rules so much. I love surf music in general, but not only is Satriani's stuff "good", its also fast. It's just "whoa". Amazing. Also, I'd like to offer Keith Richards and George Harrison as well. While they didn't have any particular "greatest solos" (Harrison maybe, but not Richards that I can recall), they're both great rhythm guitarists that have crafted some of the most memorable riffs of all time. By the way, what's this about 100 Top Guitar solos being where the list came from?
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted November 10, 2002 You've mentioned him a couple times. Who does he play for? Or is he another solo guitar god? Al Di Moea is god... simply that he is technically the fastest guitarist in existance (16 different notes a second). Yet if you want to get good on the guitar he uses a lots of different scales, and variations of scales. Simply put it. He's 5x better than Satriani, Vai and Petrucci combined. Oh and David Gilmour played for Pink Floyd Evenflow not Queen
Guest ZGangsta Report post Posted November 11, 2002 David Gilmour - This is the Queen guy, right? I'm probably just listening to the wrong Queen songs, but most of the ones I know don't even really focus on the guitar at all. Brad May was in Queen. David Gilmour was in Pink Floyd, listen to the solo in comfortably numb, yeah he rules.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 11, 2002 Rhandy Rhodes - From what I've heard, the only thing Zakk Wylde's got on the guy is that he's still breathing. Awesome guitarist that makes me like Ozzy's early solo material better than a lot of Sabbath stuff (here's where my ignorance comes into play and it turns out Rhodes was in Sabbath the whole time). Rhodes is waaaay better than Wylde, and neither were ever involved with Sabbath. Tony Iommi played guitar with them from beginning to end, be it with Ozzy, Tony Martin, or Dio. The latter two marking Sabbath's dark ages. Comparing Ozzy's solo stuff and early sabbath is kind of comparing apples and oranges though, in my book. Even if it's with the same vocalist, the material is different as night and day. Sabbath was much darker, with more of a blues element. Rhodes was better than Iommi, IMO, but he would stick out like a sore thumb were he in Sabbath. red, I must hear this Al Di Moea.
Guest TheyCallMeMark Report post Posted November 14, 2002 Are you sure Meola is faster than Yngwie? I've listened to a little of his stuff but I didn't think he was significantly faster than Malmsteen and I definatley didn't think he was as fast as Buckethead. Maybe it was just the time period I was listening to, or something. Although I don't doubt he's better than Malmsteen. His stuff is pretty straitforward scaleness. And there is no way he is faster than Segovia was. Segovia is your daddy. Steve Vai - I always hear about this guy, but I've never heard any of his material. Any recommendations? Pick up something from the late eighties, around the time Satch unloaded Surfing With The Alien. It's kind of fun to listen to the similarites between the two, while also hearing their two very seperate and distinct styles. The real amazing thing is there are two people this good alive at the same time. Listen to Black Label Society, it seems clear to me Wylde has surpassed Rhoades' shredding. Nothing of Zakk's on the radio can really compare but he fucking tears it down in BLS. Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted November 15, 2002 It's a crime that Eddie Van Halen has only scored ONE vote here because in my opinion the only person Mr. Van Halen is second to, is Jimi Hendrix. In fact, i just heard Beat It and Eddie's guest solo on that tune still makes my jaw drop. He just doesn't get enough praise if you ask me...
