Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted November 6, 2002 This might sound odd but I've always liked Nirvana "In Utero" a bit more than "Nevermind." Let's take a look at both albums song by song and compare them (which is easy since both have 12 main songs). 1. Smells Like Teen Spirit vs. Serve the Servants. Obviously Teen Spirit here. 2. In Bloom vs. Scentless Apprentice: Both are great songs, this one is a draw. 3. Come As You Are vs. Heart Shaped Box. Gotta go with Heart Shaped Box here. 4. Breed vs. Rape Me. Both are great, draw. 5. Lithium vs. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle. This will shock some people but I will go with Frances Farmer. Lithium is a good song too but it's never really been one of my faves. 6. Polly vs. Dumb. Polly win it here, Dumb is one of the few In Utero tracks I tend to skip and it was better on Unplugged. 7. Territorial Pissings vs. Very Ape. Ape is underrated, T.P. is Nevermind's worst song. Gotta go with Very Ape. 8. Drain You vs. Milk It. Tough call but I'll go with Drain You since Milk It since Drain You is a much easier listen. 9. Lounge Act vs. Pennyroyal Tea. I'll go with Pennyroyal Tea here, though I like Lounge Act too. 10. Stay Away vs. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. RFUS easy here, it's one of their most underrated songs. 11. On a Plain vs. Tourette's. On a Plain, one of Nevermind's more underrated tracks, and Tourette's is In Utero's throwaway. 12. Something in the Way vs. All Apologies. All Apologies easily here, it's one of their defining songs. To tally it up: Nevermind got 4, In Utero got 6, and there were 2 toss ups. What does everyone else think of these two albums in terms of how they compare to each other? Guest Banky Report post Posted November 7, 2002 In Utero is by far the best Nirvana record, definatly one of the best records of the decade - maybe even EVER. It is wondeful on all fronts.
Guest Angle-plex Report post Posted November 7, 2002 I like them both quite a bit. I would probably say In Utero was better if I had to choose one though.
Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Personally, I don't think you can compare them track by track like that, ESPECIALLY by the exact same track number. The best is to judge its overall sound. Personally, I like In Utero better just because the songs are more well-written, and I also feel that Cobain's vocals really stick out that much better on it as well. Of course, that's just my humble opinion...
Guest Insanityman Report post Posted November 7, 2002 If I had to choose probably In Utero. However, in my opinion, both are so god damn great.
Guest godthedog Report post Posted November 7, 2002 'in utero' by far. it's one of my favorite albums EVER, and 'nevermind' is pretty overrated in comparison. i've had the same copy of the latter since i was 12. 'nevermind' i had for a couple years, then i lost all interest into listening to it, and eventually sold it. didn't miss it a bit (and i'm notorious for buying albums 2 or 3 times because i'll sell them and miss them too much), and i didn't buy another copy of it till this past winter, when i was trying to get all the mid-90s albums i owned for a short film. judging them song-by-song doesn't really do either justice, cause it doesn't take into account the album as a whole or how well the tracks interact with and compliment each other. and i loooooooooove the whole sound of 'in utero', it's clunky and rough and angry. 'nevermind' is just too slick. i'll still bust out 'in utero' every once and bask in the glory, but another listen to 'nevermind' doesn't really do anything for me. i can't even remember the last time i listened to it. does ANYBODY still listen to 'nevermind'? with my friends and me, it's the record that everybody has but nobody listens to. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Uh, I'll second YPOV's notion that it's really silly to compare them on a track vs. track basis. I prefer In Utero by a good length. It's thick and crunchy, rocks harder, and shows a more varied range of emotions more effectively. It's also a lot wittier and more acerbic (see "Serve the Servants" for the only example you need), which I think really serves Cobain and Co. well. It also has "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies." That does it for me.
Guest Kibagami Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Indeed, In Utero is probably the better album. Cobain's progression as a lyricist really makes the album. In addition to the tracks Edwin mentioned, "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" are two of my favorite songs. They = ratings. S. Guest Banky Report post Posted November 7, 2002 What makes In Utero so great/sad/exposing is Cobain's lyrics. There is some definate resentment, cynicism, and depression undertones throughout the whole album. The rough, raw, edgy aggressive music was the perfect backdrop for the dark brooding lyrics. From top to bottom, that album is that of a tortured star. Not tortured from being famous, tortured from a ackwardly painful 27 years that had spiralled out of recognition. The guy was not a musical genius, but he had the uncanny ability to immearse his emotion into the music and make his audience connect with his feelings. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 7, 2002 In Utero's better, no question in my mind. My opinions are pretty much on par with godthedog's when it comes to comparing the two. It's not my favorite album or anything, or even close, but it's great shit, and WAY better than all of their other stuff. I like the songs on Bleach a lot, though. does ANYBODY still listen to 'nevermind'? with my friends and me, it's the record that everybody has but nobody listens to. Read my mind. Good at the time, but it hasn't held up well at all. I haven't sat down and listened to it in ages, although you'd better believe I've still got it somewhere. Guest cabbageboy Report post Posted November 7, 2002 Actually yes since the new CD was released I did go back and listen to Nevermind, and it still rules. Better than anything out today by far. Yeah I will admit that maybe track by track isn't the best way to do this. It's odd but I am an oddball when it comes to Nirvana. I knew who they were when Nevermind was out but I didn't listen to much of anything back then. I got into them when I first got in HS in 1993, right when In Utero was released. Got that CD for Christmas in 93, and it's the only CD that I can say has changed my life. Whether that is good or bad can be debated, haha. My kneejerk reaction to comments like "Bleach is their best CD" is to flame...but to be honest the CD of it I have has such shitty sound that I dunno if I've heard the CD in its best form. I was shocked at how great About a Girl sounded on the new CD. Anybody know if there is a remastered Bleach out there? That said, quite a bit of Bleach is cheesy crap. I mean who could seriously rank stuff like Paper Cuts, Mr. Moustache, Swap Meet, and Floyd the Barber above anything on Nevermind, In Utero, or even most of Incesticide for that matter. Why is it no one mentions Incesticide? That was a damn good CD aside from maybe 3 truly hideous early Sup Pop efforts (Beezwax, Mexican Seafood, Hairspray Queen)...and even those are good for laughs. Guest DawnBTVS Report post Posted November 8, 2002 I like a lot of songs on Bleach like Scoff, School, Blew, About A Girl, Downer, Sifting, Paper Cuts and Love Buzz. Incesticide I only liked Dive, Aneurysm, Aero Zeppelin and Sliver.
