Dolphins + Aikman = RATINGS~!

The Miami Dolphins indirectly contacted Troy Aikman to determine his interest in becoming their starting quarterback until Jay Fiedler returns, a team source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Fiedler is currently sidelined with a fractured thumb. He likely will be out another three weeks.

Aikman's agent, Leigh Steinberg, said that "if it were a permanent starting job on a team with Super Bowl possibilities, then I think Troy would be intrigued."

Steinberg said he has not been contacted by the Dolphins personally, but he conceded he is aware of the third-party contact.

When they asked about Aikman, the Dolphins were concerned about the health of backup quarterback Ray Lucas, who injured his shoulder in Monday night's loss to the Packers. When it was determined that Lucas would not need surgery and might be able to play Sunday night against the New York Jets -- his former team -- the Dolphins decided not to pursue Aikman. Lucas took about half the snaps in practice on Wednesday, and a decision will be made Friday whether he will start against the Jets.

According to the source, the Dolphins might resume the effort to get Aikman, depending on how Lucas performs against the Jets if he plays. In his two starts, Lucas is winless and the Dolphins have committed 10 turnovers while scoring just 20 points during that span.

There is concern the Dolphins could be jeopardizing their chances of winning the division by continuing to struggle without Fiedler.

Aikman, who could not be reached for comment, has not played since he retired from the Cowboys following the 2000 season. He has suffered nine concussions during his career and also has had back problems. Aikman, 35, currently works as an NFL analyst for Fox.

Aikman previously said that he would be interested in returning to the NFL only if he could be reunited with Dolphins offensive coordinator Norv Turner. At the time he was forced to retire because of his injuries and the Cowboys' salary cap problems, Aikman believed he was still capable of performing as one of the top five quarterbacks in the league.

Aikman lives in Dallas with his wife and three children.

Discuss and such...

I say Troy sticks to commentating and don't try to be another Chris Carter. Stick to selling cars and annoucing, Troy. Please.

What the hell? Is the Miami football team becoming a retirement home like the rest of Florida now?

Fiedler will be back in like two games.

Aikman won't be worth shit in that amount of time.

I really doubt this happens. It would take at least a month for Aikman to get in shape, learn the system and play with effectiveness... and Fiedler would be back by then.

As for Aikman, he's an idiot if he plays again... 1 more concussion and he could be seriously fucked. It's just not worth it... he alone can't improve the Dolphins much at all.

This would be dumb for both parties. Aikman would have to get back into game shape and learn an entirely new playbook. Then he'd get hit again, suffer another concussion, and end up a vegetable. The Dolphins need to weather the storm until Fiedler comes back, and Aikman needs to realize he'd be playing Russian roulette with his health if he got back on the field.

This ranks up there with the rumor I have heard about how if the Dolphins go to the Superbowl anytime soon that they would bring in Marino to be the QB for that game and to finally get that elusive Superbowl ring.

Troy was not *there* in the head in his last couple years with Dallas and I recall hearing several stories about how he was like a zombie after games. One bad hit and Troy could be down and out for good.

C'mon Troy, let's not be stupid here man.

yeah Troy Aikman should just be the celebrity endorser for the ACME Brick company.

How many concussions did Aikman have in Dallas, and does he expect the Miami Offense Line to be any better?

Wow.

Apparently Miami has decided that the best talent pool is no longer the free agent list or even the draft.

No, no. It is the NFL BROADCASTING POOL.

Look for Miami to sign Bill Maas and Tim Green to shore up their defensive line, and to sign Daryl Johnston to be the team's new fullback.

Haven't the Dolphins had problems along the line? They can always pick up Mark Schlereth. Why not get some more experiece at QB and pick up Ron Jaworski as well?

I'm sure Tom Jackson could spell Zach Thomas at middle linebacker. And then they could have Sterling Shapre lining up across from Carter at receiver. And Eric Dickerson as a change-of-pace back from Rickey Williams, and...I need to stop.

don't worry about kickers....Sebastian Janikowski will probably be a free agent soon enough. Or they could get the guy from Ace Ventura: "LACES...OUT!"
