I was just reading Scott Keith's "Smackdown Rant" and he said something that caught me off guard.

I haven't noticed this and I'm watching the Tag Match from last night right now, and I don't see it. Anyone here notice this?

The only "sloppyness" I have ever noticed with the crossface, is the fact that he doesn't ever seem to hook the arm properlly anymore. If that is what you are reffering to, then I agree it has become a little sloppy.

 

I don't know why he doesnt hook the arm though? Surley that has nothing to do with his left arm, and it makes the move look so much more real when he hooks the arm.

 

He alwyas used to do it, but lately he doesn't seem to bother.

Well i think the "beloved" Scott Keith who's stuff i've never read is going insane if he's resorted to discussing someone's arm shrinking.

 

If the crossface is looking sloppy I'd say it's a byproduct of the infamous and dreaded "WWe Style". Alot of moves look sloppy thanks to that garbage.

It does. One arm looks considerably more thicker & muscular than the other.

Same way the Liontamer has turned into a standing Boston Crab. Ignoring the argument of bigger, less flexible guys not being able to take the move / Jericho not being able to put it on them. The WWE tones everything down to prevent injury, this includes painful submission holds altered so that they aren't as painful. Even if he's not trying to hurt you, you'll still feel it if a Crossface were properly applied.

The crossface looks sloppy because more than half of the time it comes from a reversal, so it's hooked fairly quickly. The lack of an arm-hook also makes it easier for the person in the hold to reverse out of it. That's why he doesn't hook the arm anymore.

I've noticed, and thought about the reason for the lack of arm-holding during the Crossface ever since Benoit began doing it, and I think I know the answer:

 

IT LOOKS GAY

 

He's clasping a guy's arm in between his legs. Can you imagine the stereotypical non-fan who thinks all of wrestling is gay, seeing this supposedly "most devestating submission maneuver" where a guy looks like he's humping his opponent's arm?

 

I'm being serious. I wouldn't put it past Vince or someone in the offices to tell Benoit to stop doing the Crossface that way because it involved arm to genital contact.

That, and anyone who's ever gone through a season of high school, freestyle or Greco-Roman wrestling is sitting there waiting for him to finish his damn pinning combination.

 

A crossface is mildly uncomfortable at best, and that's mainly due to impact when it's first applied. Benoit's move looks like he's just squashing the guy's nose.

I just saw a picture of him and Guerrero in RAW magazine with Rey Rey on the cover, and his left arm is in fact noticeably smaller than his right one.
