The Dames Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I know its been said a billion times but tonight just takes the cake....this show is THE most unrealistic show about high school EVER. A remote control sofa doubling as a bed in the seniors study room? First off....what high schools have a senior study room to begin with? All the money going to AIDS charity? BULLSHIT...that money would have gone straight into the hands of anyone's pockets. Dames
Guest El Satanico Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 um... After all the bizarre things this show has done THAT is what finally put you over the edge? ...ooook
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I hate that show. I did watch tonight, mainly it was background. You can add the drama from every school this year and it will still not equal the drama of one semester at Boston Public. Lipshits (I'm sure I misspelled that) at least makes me laugh every now and then
Guest evenflowDDT Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I actually liked the first few episodes, but I haven't seen it in so long, apparently its gone very downhill.
Guest Sandman9000 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Just waiting for them to blow up the school. Sweeps, me guessin.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Yeah, they'll blow up the school and one teacher who loves the kids will end up getting blown up trying to disfuse the bomb. In real life high school teachers really don't care...it's a sad fact.
Guest bob_barron Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Tonight's episode kicked ass tonight!!! Sure the school is so unrealistic but Gruber totally outsmarting the seniors, the mock trial, Senate going totally whacko and the Marla-Danny thing- God damn that show ruled tonight
Guest El Satanico Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I've never seen Boston Public so I'm not just referring to it, but i don't understand why people complain about a show that's not realistic. Reality is boring so why would you want scripted shows to be based in reality just because it's not based in a fantasy world? Don't we have enough boring as shit reality shows as it is?
Guest evenflowDDT Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 In real life high school teachers really don't care...it's a sad fact. For how little they get paid and how disrespectful many students and parents are to them, would you? Anyway, on to El Satanico's comment, there's a difference between realistic drama and reality TV. A show can still be engrossing and interesting within a realistic context, and if you have a show like "Boston Public" that wants you to take it seriously with all these comical exaggerations and inaccurate portrayals it just won't work.
Guest areacode212 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 DEK shows are always unrealistic and full of this kind of stylized quirkiness. It's part of their appeal. From Picket Fences to The Practice to BP...they've all been like that. They're not meant to be "real life". EDIT: It helps to watch BP like it's more of a comedy than a gritty drama.
Guest Mole Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 First off....what high schools have a senior study room to begin with? When I was a junior in high school, they had a senior study room. However, when I became a senior they got rid of the actual room, and just had senior study in random places. So there is one in some (most?) schools. And yes, this show sucks balls now. I have lost complete interest, and barely ever watch it. David E. Kelly reminds me of Vince Russo, they both have weird/crazy/bad/sometimes good storylines.
Guest El Satanico Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Well then go watch them realistic dramas if that's what interests you...I'll happily stick to my unrealistic shows. I don't see the point of bitching about about a show not being realistic when it's obvious that it's not meant to be. If the creators took the show serious and meant for it to be realistic view of a High School then it wouldn't have so many unrealistic happenings.
Guest treble charged Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Has there EVER been a High School show that was the least bit realistic?
Guest Hogan Made Wrestling Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 This episode sucked (like almost all of them), but it would have been redeemed if Senate had fucked the hooker chick that was staying with him. Amazingly, the guy from New Kids is the most likeable character on the show.
Guest El Satanico Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I can't think of that many "drama shows" about High School. I'd say My So-called Life was the most realistic, but even it wasn't a perfectly realistic HS series.
The Dames Posted November 12, 2002 Author Report Posted November 12, 2002 My gripe is the fact that some of the things that are happening all at once are just SO preposterous. That is all. I'm still a fan. Dames
Guest MDH257 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Has there EVER been a High School show that was the least bit realistic? Freaks and Geeks......if it counts as a High School show.
Guest Luke Cage Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 I gave up on BP last year. Are there still songs at the end of every other episode? That's what drove me away.
Guest hardyz1 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 You mean with the three teachers singing with one playing the piano? None of that this year. I can't believe wrestling fans would complain that something is too unrealistic.
Guest areacode212 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Exactly. You're meant to watch it and go "oh, crap, what will that crazy Lipschitz (sp?) do next?" or "I can't believe Marla actually punched Danny! I hope he kicks her ass!" or "what 'thought-provoking dilemma' will the writers come up with this week?". I watch it because of all the crazy shit that happens, not because it's a super-realistic depiction of a big-city high school. I've been enjoying BP a lot more than The Practice lately because it hasn't gotten stale yet, and some of the characters are still kind of appealing. And because Jeri Ryan is in it.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 my problem is that nobody ever DIES on the show. They always hint or tease that some horrible thing will happen, but then they say 'NOPE!' and have something sort of bad happen. Just once I'd like someone to die, and not just have some red-shirt pop up, have two lines then get shot before the shooter gets wrestled down by the ever-caring staff. That was my gripe with Gargoyles when I was little. They killed someone off for good, then next season they had 8 episodes worth of middle-ages back story explaining why the character that was supposedly dead was still alive. They NEVER killed anybody and they never kill anybody on BP either. I hope for the last episode they have Scorsese come in and direct a huge Taxi Driver massacre at the end. That would rule all. THE EDIT: And I don't WANT BP to be like my High School. My high school makes me miserable, why would I want to have that on my TV, too?
Guest areacode212 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 They'll kill someone off sooner or later, don't worry. It'll probably be saved for a sweeps week or a season finale or something. Hopefully it'll be Joey McIntyre.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 having Lipshitz die of old age doesn't count, either. I want BLOODY MURDER!!! I want a student to go nuts and gut the guy from Scary Movie with a broken baseball bat or have someone throw someone else off the roof onto a pile of trashbags full of broken glass and thumbtacs. I want BLOOD on my TV!
Guest areacode212 Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 When DEK kills someone off, it's done in style. The priest from Picket Fences was shot to death in his confessional, and the short D.A. from The Practice was machinegunned in his car (complete with convulsions!). Having a bloody death in BP might be a little too Columbine-ish for network TV though, but I'm sure they'll come up with something.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 was Picket Fences a network show? Because you'd think that between a murder at a school and the shooting to death of a clergymen in a confession booth, most would pick the school murder.
Guest El Satanico Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Yes Picket Fences was a Network show. I never watched it, but i believe that It was on CBS.
Guest Nevermortal Posted November 12, 2002 Report Posted November 12, 2002 Actually, there have been deaths in Boston Public. Last season, Zach Delray & his friends died on the way to a Rave.
Guest RepoMan Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 If they sold it as an over the type comedy I might like it, but they always sell it as if its taking on hard hitting current issues in education.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 Actually, there have been deaths in Boston Public. Last season, Zach Delray & his friends died on the way to a Rave. where they real characters or red-shirts?
Guest bob_barron Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 Boston Public is such a great show. Lipshitz is hilarious, Guber is God and its just a nice one hour show to watch after 6 hrs class of monday. I know it's not realistic and can be very stupid for example- school has no money riot occurs causing to school to have even less money the seniors can have a big ass lounge. But it's a fun show that can be hilarious and moving at the same time. Even though it is really stupid
