Guest Anorak Report post Posted November 18, 2002 Bonnie Prince Billy: 'I See A Darkness' 1. A Minor Place 2. Nomadic Revery (all around) 3. I See A Darkness 4. Another Day Full Of Dread 5. Death To Everyone 6. Knockturne 7. Madeleine-Mary 8. Song For A New Breed 9. Today I Was An Evil One 10. Black 11. Raining In Darling 'Bonnie' is one Will Oldam, a prolific figure in what critics often dub 'lo-fi' music. On this album Oldham brings his distinctive style of dark and delicate sound out more into the open than on previous records. The arrangements are still pretty sparse but full of subtle detail and atmosphere. Oldham's voice is delicate but powerful, its hard to really compare him directly to anyone and the music itself can't really be pigeonholed either, most of the album could be described as a 'chamber folk' type sound. Oldham is one of those songwriters who makes the traditional sound almost modern in his own way. The title track is a magnificent track which has already been covered by Johnny Cash himself and 'A Minor Place', 'Black' and 'Another Day Full Of Dread' aren't far behind it. The titles may look very depressing but the lyrics are not cliched alt. rock 'angst' tripe, they are something altogether more interesting in their tone of confessional humility. The follow up record under the 'Bonnie Moniker', "Ease Down The Road", is pretty much as good as this and well worth investigating as well. His other albums were recorded under his own name as well as 'Palace' and 'Palace Brothers'.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 18, 2002 Know what? Here's a thumbs-up to AoE too, just on account of Scream of the Butterfly". But to be fair, I am high, so I may retract this tommorrow E? Anyway.. Dude, don't stop getting high and listening to that cd, it never gets old. Or did you d/l that track? If so, and you liked the vocals, seriously go buy the cd. The vocals are definitely the love it or hate it part of their music.
Guest The Metal Maniac Report post Posted November 18, 2002 I downloaded "Scream of the Butterfly" and "Dr. Seuss is Dead". The latter I found alright, and the former, as previously mentioned, awesome. And they do hold up while sober, which is very good. I find all music just sounds better while high, so I thought there was a chance when I did sober up that it wouldn't sound as good. I was wrong. I've been meaning to get a few more tracks before I decide if I'll actually buy the CD, because that's just how I do things. As for the E, like I said, I was high. Cut me some slack here. Your Paragon of Virtue 0 Report post Posted November 19, 2002 Dream Theatre - Images and Words I don't how many Dream Theatre fans there are on here, but I found this to be a great album, although a little too weird. Can't really explain why, but it has something to do with New Age hippie crap/the keyboarding which really gets on my nerves as it's the central focus more often than not. Either way, great album, and if you play the drums or the guitar, you should most definitely pick this one up. Some songs are a little pussyish in nature, but Petrucci and portnoy more than make up for it. I know I spent a lot of this space expressing some of it's weaknesses, but I just don't want you to be disappointed. So just read this; it's great, go get it now. It's one of those cds where every time you listen to it, you notice something different. It's got a much better effect with all the songs there, because the album's put together brilliantly, in terms of the order the tracks are in. I'd check out God Machine, Jezebel, and Bones of Baby Dolls next.
