Here's my general impression:

 

S - U - C - K.

 

It's still a Smackdown game and, honestly, the game mechanics are almost a step backwards from Just Bring It. It's almost like Smackdown has been injected with even more speed and more non-sensical no-selling and randomness.

 

I've been hit with finishers when my opponent didn't have finishers.

 

I've seen reversal animation cycles get cut off just in time for me to swallow a Stunner.

 

And, just in case you thought the commentary would be improved, I've also heard "that bastard Austin's whalin' with that right hand" while I'm holding Austin in a headlock.

 

RVD's animations are dead-on (which makes everybody else's animations look like a hack job) and I haven't messed with the CAW yet, though, so there is perhaps some hope still left...but right now, it's got to make up a lot of ground for me not to be disappointed.

I haven't gone the CAW path yet, but I've been playing a season as Brock. I won the Undisputed title on my first shot, and defended it a few times. Then I had a ladder match against Booker T for the belt. I'm controlling the match, and have a finisher available. Booker hits me with a random spinebuster out of nowhere, climbs the ladder (which was NOT in the center of the ring, mind you) in about a half-second and grabs the belt. Really, it was that fast: he was on the ground reaching for the ladder, then he was reaching for the belt. I don't mind losing the strap as long as it's in a good match, but WTF??

 

That's one of my caveats with the game, which I think is solid overall. Other complaints would be the difficulty in changing between opponents, random no-selling, and some occasional collision detection issues.

Until a wrestling game can take itself as seriously as the Tekken franchise for example, and actually work to contain everything it could possibly contain, instead of the half jobs we get every year, despite CAW, they will always be second teir fighters.

 

I can't take a game seriously when it has me suplexing someone out of a dropkick, or subpar graphics, or just a lack of characters. There's no reason why the roster couldn't be twice as large.

 

CAW has always been my favorite thing for SD!, but when it came down to it, you could CAW the night away, and the next day you still have to play a shady game.

 

Yes there are fun move, yes it's fun to do spike piledrivers to people. Hurrah. But honestly, where's the polish? There are too many spotty things, I just wish a wrestling game would get half the quality of tekken, and you can't say that it has. Otherwise there would be no compaints, in terms of collision detection especially. Stupid shit like that destroys any mark out value.

The VPW engine takes itself as seriously as Tekken and though not a graphic treat it is a gameplay one.

Is there a match mode called Captain Fall Tornado or something like that? I heard it mentioned in several magazine reviews and I think I saw it as a match between other wrestlers on season mode but I can't find it anywhere on exhibition

 

Can you enter your caw midway through the season mode, I went to new entry but he wasn't on there!!

I went through it once, but yes, it's slow, plodding and pointless. I fucked Raw over by feeding Brock (my Character) the likes of Shawn Stasiak and Randy Orton.

I rented earlier this week, and although it took me a while to learn the system, I eventually learned to like it. I made a CAW, and have been having a lot of fun in Season Mode. I even rented it for a few more days.

 

I want a wrestling game, but I'm not going to make any decisions until I rent Legends of Wrestling II next week.

 

Btw, does anyone know how to perform instant replays of the end of a match? Assuming replays exist.

Yes, I had one in my season. It was me (as Brock) along with RVD and Matt Hardy against The Rock, Rikishi, and Undertaker. One person on each side is designated as the Captain (they always have an arrow over them in the ring; it was Rocky and I in the match I had), and only a Captain can be pinned or submit for the match to end. It's a fun match, as long as you don't mind the chaos of six guys in the ring.

I just bought the game today, and it kicks ass. I love the season mode especially. I won the Undisputed Title with Lesnar my first shot, and my first title defense was against Jeff and Regal. Get this, that was the main event for Judgment Day. The only problem I have with the season mode is that you can't switch superstars halfway through the season. I'm bored of using Lesnar now, but I don't want to start a new season.

If you go to "Options", then "System Data", then "Load System Data" and load the second memory card, that allows you to have access to whatever you saved onto the second memory card. The downside is you'd have to unlock everything twice, but at least that way my brother can do his season, I can do my season, and we don't have to freaking reset and switch memory cards everytime one of us needs a break.

I wonder... if we do a PPV...and unlock, and not save click to the season window then Click back to Continue, do you go back to the PPV with the option already unlocked so you can unlock something else without having go around a full year?

The CAW isn't as detailed as I thought. The clothing choices are very limited (it seems there are mostly women's clothes), you can't make body hair, and you can't give your custom wrestler an "entrance" outfit to wear while he walks to the ring. Not even sunglasses.

I really like this game. I got it on Thursday and after a couple of days of playing it I think it is the best wresling game since No Mercy. I love the create a wrestler mostly because of the puro movesets they have in it. That really does it for me. To see Nagata actually salute before he puts someone in the Nagata lock is just great for me. I think the game play has improved and the career mode is really great.

Nope, but if you face Kidman and steal his move you can do the SSP.

1. You can't edit what they wear, but you can change their theme music in the edit section.

 

2. Yes, just put them together in a stable.

 

3. No, I think you need to play through atleast 3 times to get everything.

I was just wondering because if WWE had put the SSP for brock in the game, they might have someday intended for him to use it.

 

I guess it's too risky for the next big thing to come off the top like that.
