Guest Loss4Words Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Was he under contract when he went from ECW to WCW? Everyone says something different. If he had a contract, how was he able to legally jump ship? If he did not have a contract, why do some people say he did? Anyone wanna clarify?
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted November 17, 2002 I thought I heard that he WAS under contract but Paul hadn't paid him his money in quite a while so he felt that he had the right to breach his contract. I could be wrong.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted November 17, 2002 I seem to remember people (on the tOA board?) wondering why Heyman didn't have him under contract at the time he jumped.

If he did not have a contract, why do some people say he did? Anyone wanna clarify? Loss, from all the reports I read at the time, Awesome WAS in breach of contract when he jumped. WCW wanted him to bring the ECW title with him to Nitro but Heyman was able to get his legal counsel to stop that before it happened. Heyman eventually let Awesome out of his contract in exchange for a supposed 1 million dollars, but made sure that he jobbed the title out to Tazz first. Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted November 17, 2002 I remember the day all this took place. Awesome was under contract and was going to appear on Nitro with the ECW title (maybe to throw it into the trash). Heyman worked out a deal at the last minute I believe which allowed Awesome to appear on the show but not with the title. In return for Awesome appearing the announcer had to refer to Awesome as the ECW champion.
Guest buffybeast Report post Posted November 17, 2002 And look where Mike's poor decisions have landed him. Unemployed.
Guest T®ITEC Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Well, at least he got to make some good money in WCW and WWE before he became unemployed this year, instead of just being out of a job in 2000.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Funny how these things work out, with Paul E as a top booker in the only real game going now. Throwing the ECW title in the trash would have been a dumb idea, since I'm sure the average WCW fan didn't even know what ECW was. It would only have given more notice to the product. And I am still convinced that it was Mike Awesome under a mask as The Machine for the Feb 2, 2000 Thunder. The guy jobbed to Page and worked JUST like Awesome does, even did the thumbs to the chest deal...and that was just two months before Mike debuted in WCW. I think it was a tryout match. Guest kingkamala Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Does anyone here think Mike Awesome was at least decent in WCW? I did his matches with Kanyon, Scott Steiner, Booker T and DDP were all pretty good. Not as good as his ECW career but I thought his WCW career was pretty kickass on it's own wrestling-wise....gimmick wise that's a whole other ball park. Guest Gary Busey Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Would WCW really have wanted Awesome to throw the ECW title in the trash? At the time, Bischoff was trying extremely hard to get an ECW/WCW relationship going to reinvigerate their business. (Remember the "big surprise" that WCW promised at one of their PPVs during the Bischoff/Russo regime? It was supposed to be an ECW/WCW on air feud, but when that fell through, they turned Goldberg heel instead. Bischoff, according to the dirt, claimed he would blade for Paul E on camera.) I thought Awesome was literally awesome in WCW. He had some great matches and was something fresh. Russo tried to recreate a Mic Foley type character (awesome hardcore wrestler who the fans loved but was saddled with purposely stupid gimmicks but used them to his advantage), and that was the downfall for Awesome. Awesome was under contract to ECW when he jumped, but he and WCW thought he could get out of it. He couldn't. When he first appeared on WCW tv, the company had to pay a huge dollar amount, announce him as the ECW champion and pimp the upcoming ECW PPV, and not allow Awesome to use the mic. Well, Awesome talked, he was refered as "isn't he the ECW champion? Doesn't he have a title defense coming up?" and because of this WCW had to pay an even bigger dollar amount so they wouldn't get sued. They didn't follow through with any of the terms ECW laid out to let him out of his contract, so they had to pay.
Guest cobainwasmurdered Report post Posted November 17, 2002 Awesome was decent but not great in WcW. The problem was that he couldn't wrestle the stiff style that he did in Japan and in ECW. He encountered the same problem in the WWE and that along with knee problems is why he's unemployeed.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted November 17, 2002 That 70's Guy was a fucking embarassment but he did have good matches against DDP, Steiner, Booker, and Kanyon. His Career Killer gimmick was great and I wish he was pushed harder that way.

THE MACHINE!!! I knew that guy existed and was on a Thunder episode only once jobbing to Page with no explanation! Was that Awesome? The Machine had this big elaborate entrance and was never mentioned before or after February 2nd.
Guest Youth N Asia Report post Posted November 18, 2002 Man, 10 seconds into the match I was saying to myself "That's Mike Awesome!" Alas no one has come out anywhere and confirmed this. I still think it was him though.
Guest kingkamala Report post Posted November 18, 2002 It says here http://www.ddtdigest.com/updates/2000015t.htm that The Machine was Emory Hale, best known for getting the briefest of pushes.

I don't understand why WCW dropped it in favor of the 70s guy and the Fat chick lover.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted November 18, 2002 I fogot about the fat chick thriller gimmick. That one was worse than the 70's gimmick because at least the 70's gimmick provided some comic relief.
