Here's the section of the song that causes me to suspect the titular person might be a she: Reno Dakota I'm no Nino Rota I don't know the score Have I annoyed you or is there a boy who Well he's just a whore I've had him before It makes me drink more You can ignore the fact that Stephin Merritt--the song's writer--is gay; "Reno Dakota" is sung by a woman, addressing a lover who has left her. The line about the boy indicates that this estranged lover is a man being tempted by another man, or that the song's narrator is a lesbian with an estranged lover being tempted by a guy. It could go either way. ...or maybe the song's narrator is male, but Merritt decided to have a woman sing it. I don't know. There is some sexual ambiguity in there, but not enough to overturn my original decision. That does, however, bring up the nasty subject of transvestites yet again. Should "Lola" and "Candy Says" be considered for the final tally, even though they're about men who have adopted the name of a woman. Now...it doesn't say that explicitly in "Candy Says," so I'm willing to let that one slide. There's a line in "Lola," however, where the narrator actually says "I'm a man and so is Lola."
