Guest Kinetic Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Would anyone object including showtunes? Because "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" is gnawing a hole in my skull.
Guest Incandenza Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Why not. I object to many of the songs listed. "Angel" and "beauty" just aren't acceptable. Oh, given the ambigious sexuality of many of the Magnetic Fields' songs, "Reno Dakota" may or may not be a girl.
Guest Kinetic Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 The liner notes say "Reno Dakota" is a male, I believe. I can see "Angel" being objectionable. I personally object to "Ms. Jackson" because it's a general term, rather than an actual name.
Guest goodhelmet Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Songs I'm surprised no one's listed yet, or they have and I just missed it: Kiss - "Beth" yeah i knocked that one out too. anyone done rod stewart maggie mae? the who -sally simpson four seasons- dawn (go away)
Guest Kinetic Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 I had "Beth" in the first post and "Maggie Mae" a little later on.
Guest goodhelmet Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 dude, you should know by now, i don't read your posts anyway back to the matter at hand.... the hollies- dear eloise the hollies- sandy the monkees -valleri
Guest Flyboy Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 "Mary Jane" -- Alanis Morissette. "Little Suzie" -- Michael Jackson.
Guest T®ITEC Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 The J. Geils Band song is actually just called "Centerfold". "Angel" isn't technically in the title... Anyway... I didn't see this one listed, so I thought that I'd add it: Wallflowers: "Josephine"
Guest The Metal Maniac Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 "Annalee" - Dream Theater "Melissa" - Mercyful Fate "Cross Eyed Mary" - I can't get the name of the original band right now, because Maidenfans.com is being a fuckwit. All I know is Maiden covered it. And here's a tricky one..."Boy Called Sue" - Johnny Cash. Sue is most definately a girl's name, but as you can tell, it's referring to a male in the song. Does it count?
Guest The Amazing Rando Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Weezer - Jamie great song....even though I hate Weezer
Guest Incandenza Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 The liner notes say "Reno Dakota" is a male, I believe. Here's the section of the song that causes me to suspect the titular person might be a she: Reno Dakota I'm no Nino Rota I don't know the score Have I annoyed you or is there a boy who Well he's just a whore I've had him before It makes me drink more You can ignore the fact that Stephin Merritt--the song's writer--is gay; "Reno Dakota" is sung by a woman, addressing a lover who has left her. The line about the boy indicates that this estranged lover is a man being tempted by another man, or that the song's narrator is a lesbian with an estranged lover being tempted by a guy. It could go either way. ...or maybe the song's narrator is male, but Merritt decided to have a woman sing it. I don't know. Nothing in the lyrics indicates the exact gender of the narrator, so I'm forced to assume it's female since a woman is singing it.
Guest Incandenza Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Oh, and from now on, could anyone contributing to the list in the future carefully look through the list beforehand to see if a particualr song is already there? We're getting multiple repeats.
Guest ElectricRaccoon Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng
Guest treble charged Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Matthew Good Band - 'Carmelina' I think that's about a girl, but the lyrics don't really seem to clarify it for me.
Guest Kinetic Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Because Stephin Merritt wrote the song, I'm forced to conclude that "Reno Dakota" is addressed to a male. There is some sexual ambiguity in there, but not enough to overturn my original decision. That does, however, bring up the nasty subject of transvestites yet again. Should "Lola" and "Candy Says" be considered for the final tally, even though they're about men who have adopted the name of a woman. Now...it doesn't say that explicitly in "Candy Says," so I'm willing to let that one slide. There's a line in "Lola," however, where the narrator actually says "I'm a man and so is Lola." So...that one I'd have to think about.
Guest Incandenza Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 But Merritt's written love songs addressed to women, so it's tough for me to come down on one position.
Guest goodhelmet Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 "Cross Eyed Mary" - I can't get the name of the original band right now, because Maidenfans.com is being a fuckwit. All I know is Maiden covered it. this was originally recorded by 'jethro tull'
