Guest SP-1 Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Okay, so I'm running Windows XP Home Edition here. I go to run a Disk Cleanup, and it automatically has three progress bars showing off the bat as it scans/compresses old files. Well, soon the computer is bordering on locking up, and a fan or something keeps going faster and faster, getting louder and louder. I switched from an 8 year old computer to my brand new Sony VAIO, so I'm not used to a scandisk/disk cleanup making my computer sound like it's going to explode and making it extremely slow. Is this normal for this generation of computers? Normal for Windows XP Home Edition? Or is there maybe a problem somewhere that kicks in when I try to run disk cleanup maybe? Defrag works just fine, btw. Any advice/help would be appreciated. SP
Chunk Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 Hmm, that sounds wierd to me. i dont really see how software could change the way your hardware sounds. Ive got a pretty old pc im afraid, sorry i couldnt help further, but i wouldn't have though it could be down to windows. ChUnK!
Guest Eagan469 Posted November 28, 2002 Report Posted November 28, 2002 SpiderPoet - do you have an Intel 800 series chipset? If you do you can install Intel Application Accelerator, which automatically reduces your hard drive's noise. Get it here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?...?fid=1011788739 If you don't have an Intel 800 (800, 810, 820, etc.) series chipset, DON'T install it as people who have had their systems F'd up. Works great with my Intel 82810 graphics controller, though.
Guest SP-1 Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Thank, Eagan. I'll look into it to see what's more specifically under the hood. Thanks.

Also if its new and you can't figure it out and its under warranty don't hesitate to call Sony.
Guest SP-1 Posted November 29, 2002 Report Posted November 29, 2002 Indeed. Does Disk Cleanup account for the revving of the fan or whatever it is? That was my main concern.
Guest dreamer420 Posted November 30, 2002 Report Posted November 30, 2002 I have worked with computers for nearly three years and I found that if you get a strange noice from your machine and it isn't your fan, then it's probably the hard drive about to fuck up.
