alternatives to wwe

Recommended Posts

Guest DeputyHawk

i've always been a mainstream kinda wrestling fan, wwe and wcw with a touch of ecw now and again. now that vinceland is the only major game in town and it sucks untold amounts of animal ejaculate, i'm looking to expand my viewing but am incredibly ignorant as to what's out there to pursue. i basically want to sample as many different regularly promoting feds as possible, whose product would be available through traders.

i've already got a taster for nwa:tna (can take it or leave it), roh (liking a lot), xpw and czw (both pretty impressive). so basically, what would people suggest as a good little indy fed out there to follow? thanks in advance for anyone aiding me in my quest out of ignorance.

cheers,

dh.

If you have directv or get the channel Galavision, they show CMLL and AAA Lucha Libre on Saturday's and Sunday's at 11:00 am for usually three hours. I have only been watching for a few weeks and I love it.

Do not listen to The Starman. Well, I guess you should, because everybody should check out SOME puro. But if you turn into an elitist puro fuckhead, I'm going to have to track you down and make you eat your parents.

Try to track down a Primal Conflict Wrestling show. They're a pretty good hardcore indy.

LUCHA!

I am seriously considering getting the MLW DVD from Highspots, any comments on its NYC show that had Shocker vs La Parka?

ROH should be considered but then you would have to get the tapes from RF video :stupid: , will they ever have DVDs out in retail :hm:

if you in a major city you should have several indies to choose from.....DFW has one in nearly every part of the Mega Plex. Denton, Arlington, Hurst, Downtown Fort Worth, Bronco Bowl!

If your used to, and like, the mainstream, then i would go for NWA:TNA. Ive only seen the first 4 shows, but i love the promotion.

If by any chance your from the UK, then check out FWA. www.frontierwrestling.com They're the best we have to offer here in the UK and are a great promotion. Guys like AJ Styles, Jody Fleisch, Jonny Storm, Doug Williams and Chris Daniels work regularly for them.

But anyway..

DH, If you want a Primal Conflict show PM me and i'll foward ya address to my friend who currently tapes em'.

Is the MLW 2nd DVD out yet anyway? I ordered the first one from the ECW Arena from Highspots..i want the 2nd one as well along with Steve Corino in Zero-One

Actually, some junior-heavyweight puro really wouldn't be bad. It's like puro-lite. The guys work hard, but you can 'get' the matches without having to sit down and think about them.

You should check out eiither Puro or MMA. For Indy feds, the only indy fed I really follow is RoH.

For a Domestic product, ROH is probrably the best thing right now. MMA is great too, especially Pride. UFC is damn good too, but Pride has the money to get the best fighters so their match ups are better. MMA is also a good transition to Puro. A lot of moves used in MMA are also used in puro and I found puro matches made a ton more sense after watching and educating myself to MMA. I've given Lucha a chance because I get Galavision and while it's good, I wouldn't put any money to it. And BTW, if you are a workrate freak, you need Joshi something fierce. The Joshi I've seen blows away what men (NA and Japanese men) have done and most Joshi big shows are better than most Wrestlemania's in terms of workrate.

get UFC Hits 2 and Pride 10 Return of the Warrior now, for good start in MMA.

1000% Guapos will be the #1 stable in Mexico, Inferinos are ok but Tarzan is alway injuried. Forget about recent AAA go retro for the good stuff.

Since everyone else said ROH, I'll pimp Wildside. Great storytelling + at average, pretty good ringwork (though a lot of stuff is above-average) + that old-school feel that we all know & love + best commentary in the biz + Jeff G. Bailey make Wildside your Number One Alternative (their catchphrase, I buy into the hype).

Get yourself some tapes, whether it be old WWF, WCW, ECW, or even the old NWA. If you are sick of the WWE's product today try some older stuff that you may have missed in the past.

Styles_Clash: Do you happen to know where I can buy Wildside videos from and the prices for the videos?

Also, does Wildside have a website?

what everyone has said so far makes perfect sense. if you are truly fed up with wwe BUT NOT fed up with wrestling, there are plentyof alternatives. unfortunately, for the most part, this will cost a nice chunk of change but there are some excellent deals on the net.

ROH- get it. got it. good! trust me, this is the best alternative to wwe.

Puro- if you aren't familiar with puro, you really need to do your homework to find what shows would best fit your viewing tastes. if you want a puro comp that showcases a wide range of styles, pm me and we'll work something out.

MMA- do you like guys beating the holy high fuck out of each other? this might be the route for you! some of it can be quite boring though if you get a hold of a bad show. just be aware.

NWA Wildside- can't comment.

NWA:TNA- Hey, the guys in the folder live and die by this promotion. there is some great work hidden in the russo-ocity

Lucha- people dismiss lucha as flippy floppy bs but that is only a fraction of what it is about. really, if you want to see some of the best heel work in the world or some of the most tricked-out submissions, lucha would be a great alternative to wwe.

TajiriMark (aren't we all?), go to www.nwa-wildside.com to get info and tapes. Tapes cost 20 bucks (the two night sets, like Hardcore Hell 2002, cost 35 bucks for both tapes).

Aw man I turned on to Lucha yesterday and I saw a crappy, no-La Parka LLL match. Grr.

It's higher-quality public access, if you get my drift. The quality is starting to get better, as Andrew Thomas has spiffed up the name graphics and stuff. HH 2002 has really bad sound during the ring entrances, but that's the only real problem I've had with not being able to see or hear something.

My alternatives to WWE are ROH, & the best of Japan tapes @ highspots. This is a great way to find out what Japanese feds you like. If you like junior heavyweights check out Toryumon Toryumon

these are all really great outlets, and i've managed (with some difficulty) to get hold of quite a few of them on tape to sample. unfortunately there doesn't seem to be that many indy traders in the uk, and it costs rather a lot to get pal tapes from the us.

of the main u.s. indies, i love roh and can tolerate nwa:tna. xpw is a bit too garbagey for my tastes, but czw seems to have a lot of good stuff in their mix. sandman 9000, or anyone else into czw, do you know of any sites that list past results so i can find out a little more about the promotion's history? the official website only carries results of the most recent card. footage of nwa: wildside, primal conflict, and ovw i have not been able to get hold of.

mma and shoot-fighting just don't do it for me, unfortunately, and lucha and puro are somewhat scary for a non-initiated bod to crack, like trying to get into jazz for a longtime rock fan. however, that little venture was well worth the effort and patience, so i'll keep an open mind on japanese & mexican alternatives.

for now though (as cash is very much an issue), i think i'm settling on roh and czw, with tentative tiptoes towards puro and the british fwa, to keep me amused while vince and co faff around oiling up hhh's buff body and holding back all the legitimate talent. thanks everyone for all the great pointers.

czwfans.com should help with the past results, as well as some tape reviews and a message board.

czwwrestling.de is a german fansite, but once a week, a highlight reel of a match is posted. This week is Ruckus vs. Chris Cash vs. Sonjay Dutt in a Ladders match from Night of Infamy. The clip changes once a week, so if you're ever looking for a sample of CZW, this is a good way to do it. It's how I really got hooked onto CZW. He's made tons of clips, but he's pretty anal about people putting up his older clips, so if you wanted some of those, you'd have to PM me about it and I could send them to you. I've got most of them.

its not really hard to get into Puro or Lucha if you have been exposed to WCW of the mid 90s to 2000 then you would at least know a few of the stars. So just get a best of tape of you favorite forgein star in his natural environment. Such as Rey Misterio best of tape in AAA & CMLL or best of Lyger in New Japan.

If you seen any of the ECW shows then you would of been exposed to some great forgein stars such as Masato Tanaka, Super Crazy, Hayabusa, Kiaenti Dx.

i do like puro action a lot (haven't seen much lucha), i just like to know a lot about the promotions i'm giving my time to, and it's quite intimidating with the whole psychology of injuries and match strategies dating back several matches if not years. it just seems like i'd have to invest a hell of a lot of time to really give it the attention it deserves, time i don't really have. there's so many shows going on to keep track of as well. maybe i'm putting puro fandom on too high a pedestal, but it can seem very snobby and elitist towards casual fans (hense the jazz comparison), and being a casual fan is probably all i'd have the time and cash to invest in, therefor it just seems like it would be a waste of time to dip my toes in without being able to really follow it like a diehard, which seems to be necessary. with roh and czw, there's one maybe two shows a month to keep track of and watch. i'm sure i'll get more into puro with time (especially if wwe continues on its current path of dogshit), but i'll probably need quite a lot of time to familiarise myself with the product first. have started dipping into the strong style spirit page, and will decide on a few recent shows to acclimatize myself with over the christmas period. i'm sure it doesn't seem intimidating to someone who's been following it for a while, but from a newbie's perspective, believe me it is.

Ah, I still miss my Wildside! Last time I saw their syndie program was about one year ago, then we lost America One to Telefutura. My only link since then have been Larry Goodman's reports on the federation's website. What I still wouldn't give to be able to get my hands on at least the best of the weekly shows or some major events.

And I'm glad to see another Jeff G. Bailey mark! I think he's great with Iceberg (as the being of inconceivable horror said to me himself in an email, they have the Abdullah/Gary Hart thing going ;-)) To hell with workrate, Iceberg, with Bailey encouraging him, was my favorite performer in Wildside. Probably because of how much of an old school monster he is, which did much more for me as a heel than certain other people who sHHHall remain nameless...

(Also wondering if Jeremy Lopez's "I'm better than you cause I wrestled in Japan" gimmick would take off among the smarks if more of them knew who he was ;-))
