I'm about to get a new computer

Recommended Posts

Guest HartFan86

I'm finally getting a new computer at mom's after being stuck with a fucking slow Acer dial-up modem since 1999. It's been good, but I can't stand it anymore. I NEED BROADBAND! So anyways, I'm wondering if you guys could tell me what brand I should get for computers. I'm looking at Dell, but I'm just not sure. I don't need a DVD rom, having a CD burner would be nice, I'd like a fast computer, just enough space (20 GB or so), and just a computer that will last a long time (5-10 years).

I figured there's a lot of people on this board into computers and you guys know which ones are good and which ones are bad, so any help at all is appreciated.

You are lucky you are getting a new computer. I bought a computer finally March 2001. It is a Compaq Presario...........700MHZ..........only 10GB of space. My mom and dad are VERY oldfashioned. I want broadband, I want a better computer. But, they say "at least you have a PC". So, I am stuck with an old PC, possibly until I get a steady job, which is hard. Getting a job in NJ is impossible....

Well, I suggest checking out what Gateway has to offer.

Gateways are good, but a little pricey. The one I have we got last year and it came out to about $1500 with a CD burner, 20GB HD, 1.2GHz processor, 3D card, and some other things. Dell looks like a good choice if you want to save a few bucks.

EDIT: Post #1986 - The Sox lost the Series, the Pats got murdered by the Bears. Bad times. At leas the Celtics won their last title.

DO NOT BUY A BRAND NAME COMPUTER. Get a tech catalog, talk to someone who makes them from parts, whatever. But if it's got a brand name, YOU ARE GETTING RIPPED OFF.

That is all.

Brand name PCs do cost more, yes. If you want a good PC maker that doesn't have the brand-name recognition of a Dell or Gateway (and costs about 25-30% less), check out Atlas Micro. They build Athlon and P4 systems, which gives you many more options, and better prices on the Athlon systems.

Also, there are a lot of power sellers on Ebay with legit computer businesses. I've seen 2.4 GHz P4 systems (loaded PC, but no monitor) going for about $650. It's easy enough to spot the real sellers there, so you know you're not buying someone else's problem.

your lucky if you can have a computer that can last 3 years, last time I checked computer advances happen roughly on a 18 month time period. Of course the computer you buy could be "worthless" in 4 months when you see the price drops in the weekend advertisements.

make one yourself so you can get what you want for a reasonable price. $1500 should be the most you would have to spend.

If you really want to be ahead of the upgrade curve get a DVD Burner and a TV video card so you can make your own Wrestling Super Cards.

stay away from ACER, Compaq, HP

Those look pretty damn impressive. Do you have one of these DrTom?

Wow those computers are pretty nice for good prices. If i was gonna buy a pre built machine,I'd probably buy off those guys. An wow they come with monitors, amazing an not some off the wall brand.

Just stay away from the crap you see advertised in sunday ads, because it may look like a good thing until you read the fine print "monitor not included.

You can build one yourself or ask someone too,but it's the software that will get you. Unless you already got the software you need or cough borrow it from someone.

I personally don't have one, no. But I've recommended them to several people who were looking for new PCs, and those who went with Atlas have been quite happy.

I got a Factory Refurbished Compaq Presario 5000 model with an AMD Duron 850, 40 GB Hard Drive, 128 MB memory (recently upgraded! whoohoo) CD-RW Drive, DVD Drive, TNT 2 Video Card (decent) a semi-generic sound card, keyboard, mouse and Win ME (upgraded to XP myself) for 400 bucks with a decent refund/return/waranty policy. A brand new computer with the same features was running about 1,000 from Compaq 2 summers ago (2001) when I bought it right from the Compaq Refurbished area of their website (since then HP has bought Compaq, I don't know if they sell refurbs, but I know Dell and Gateway sell refurbs although not as cheap..)

I haven't had any problems with it. Factory refurbished stuff is as good as the original because the factory the built it fixed it. Just plain refurbished is sketchy, although it might be cheaper than factory refurbished.

To me it was better to buy it this way then to buy a brand new "cheap" priced (699 or so from Gateway or Dell, etc.) computer which would have had less features then this one for more money. And in another year or so I plan to buy a new computer the same way...

I run this site from a Gateway 266Mhz. Can you believe that? I got the shit in '98 and its practically garbage. I paid WAY too much for it and after all of the problems I've had, I'll never get Gateway again.

Personally....I'd love me some Dell.

Dames, give Ebay a whirl. I priced a nice P4 2.53 GHz system on Atlas Micro for a little over a grand. Then I checked some of the power seller auctions (the people who have real PC businesses and build the systems to fit the auction specs) and was amazed at the deal. I ended up getting the same system I had priced on Atlas (with the only difference being a 2.4 GHz CPU as opposed to 2.53) for right around $700, shipped. It didn't come with a monitor, but I have a 17-inch flat panel anyway, so I wouldn't want one. It's definitely worth a try if you want to get a new PC for less than hald of what you'd pay on sites like Dell or Gateway.

This is the first PC I've owned that I haven't built myself, and it's been a dream so far.

I have had a dell since about maybe a year and I am very happy with it. It runs like a charm. I do have a Cable modemso that helps out with everything. I have a ton of stuff on my computer already and have only about half of the hard drive filled. I would highly reccomend a Dell. I haven't have any problems except that one little virus problem but that isn't the computers fault. Also I got a discount from my mothers work because they all have Dell's and she somehow got a deal. It was about $1,100 for about a $1,600 computer. Really great deal.

Quick Question: Is Alienwaregood computer company?

Yes. They specialize in higher-end PCs designed for gamers and other graphics-intensive power users, as far as I can tell, but everything I've heard about them is good. They also have some very cool case designs.

You can buy those cases from Tiger Direct for about 69 bucks. All the colors too. Its a good place to go if you are looking to build your own. You could build a rocking PC for pretty cheap. I am thinking of ripping the motherboard out of one of my PCs and then putting in a faster motherboard/CPU in the one I have now and buying a cheap case.
