Japanese horror movies

I'm looking for Japanese horror movies (Specifically Ringu and Battle Royale, which I guess isn't REALLY a horror movie, but I digress), and the only place I've found them that I'd trust is Amazon.com, and all I saw was a PAL DVD of Battle Royale. Anybody know a site that has them?

There is no region 1/0 NTSC DVD available for Ringu. If you really want one, you would have to pick up a Region 0 bootleg off eBay.

As for Battle Royale, there is a region 1 NTSC DVD available in the U.K. from a company called Spartan. You could order it from the Spartan website, or get it off eBay like I did (it was actually cheaper to get it off eBay).

All the Japanese genre DVD I have were bought off eBay. They include Audition, Battle Royale, City of Lost Souls, The Eye, Ringu, Versus & Visitor Q. I know eBay is full of bootlegs, but if you search carefully, you can weed out the legit ones (unless the only version available IS a bootleg).

Did you see the American version 1st? that could really hurt it.

Well remember, subtitles/dubbing do take away a lot of the story telling sometimes, since there is no such thing as "exact translation" I mean all the japanese dialouge could be dumbed down for the subtitles and/or dubbing just to get it through to the viewer faster.......

The american version was damn good, but it is a hard sell to say the original had worse storytelling since, that is where the story came from in the first place, however I will reserve full judgement till I see both versions.

Well, here's some non-spoilers for you that can somewhat explain my point.

The Japanese version is about a half hour shorter and everything in condensed. The American version has more sublety.

The American version isn't an exact remake....more like expanding on the original concept as not all of the elements of the Japanese version are in it...and those that were used were improved upon, IMO.

Both movies actually tell two different stories.

The ending is a bit different in the Japanese version and in my opinion has the better of the two, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the film.

The American version's characters are more drawn out and have backstory you can sink your teeth into.

I found a site with those two movies AND Cure and Pulse on VHS, so I'll just get those and copy to DVD. And say what you want about the movie Ringu, but Sadako > Samara

I actually recently downloaded a DVD-rip of Ringu off KaZaA, so if you just want to see it (which I haven't yet) you can probably find it there again.

But C.H.U.D., oh C.H.U.D., how is The Eye? I've been really eyeing (pun sort of intended) that one for a while online on various HK import sites... how is it? Is it true an American remake of that film has been suggested because of the success of The Ring?

Odd, I just tried mine and mine is too. That usually means you don't have the right codec, but if it's not DivX or XviD (which I have) what else could it be?

I haven't watched it yet, but I'll let you know how it is.

As for Ringu, I saw it about 2 months before the remake, and although I did like it, I thought the remake was much better.

There's a shop near me that imports japanese toys and general pop culture stuff like movies and music. They had a copy of Battle Royale that you could pick up. The place is called Just Be Toys. They have a website but I couldn't find it at this time. You might try doing a search for them.

since I don't want to start too many threads I'll just ask this here

Anybody ever see any of the movies from the Guinea Pig series? I saw the summaries for 'He Never Dies' and 'Mermaid in a Manhole' and they sounded pretty neat.

I haven't seen any of them, but they sound pretty messed up.

Oh yeah, I picked up another Japanese horror DVD today called Dark Water, which is directed by the guy who directed Ringu. I can't wait to watch it.

*BUMP*

Bumping two five-day old threads in one day? Sigh... going back to dial-up sucks. Anyway, C.H.U.D., have you gotten a chance to see The Eye yet?
