Guest NYCTA Bus No. PA1767 Report post Posted December 2, 2002 You're generalizing a whole genre just because you may have listened to a few circa 1997 Puff Dady songs. That's where you are wrong. If you're not going to take the time to at least do a modicum of research on the genre, then don't go showing your ass by spouting off a bunch of ignorant gibberish in an attempt to be with the "in" crowd. Guest Eagan469 Report post Posted December 2, 2002 Stop being an ignorant dick and do some research, seriously. There's nothing worse than some jackoff that tries to be cool while spouting off nothing but some warmed over tripe. I don't like Rock music, but I don't call all Rock artist a bunch of screaming white boy faggots because that's not what Rock is all about and that's not what those guys are. If you know nothing on the subject, just shutup and let someone who doesn't jackoff on their brain do the talking. Excuse me, not once have I insulted anybody. Hip Hop, is rhyming in rythmic fashion (usually violent or vulgar content) over a synthesized beat, or sampled music. Please tell me politely where I was wrong. Except Will Smith. And then the other rappers use their own lyrics to tell him to fuck off for not using obscenities in his songs. Ironic.
Guest NYCTA Bus No. PA1767 Report post Posted December 2, 2002 Actually Will Smith has sampled a few beats himself including "The Beat Goes On" for his song "Miami" and "The Greatest Dancer" for his song "Gettin' Jiggy With It." Not to mention "Just the Two of Us" is a remake of an older songof the same name.

Look, I'd be happy to have a conversation with you about music but you seem to resort to insults, no need for that. I'm not trying to be with any "in" crowd, and you continue to tell me to do some research, yet don't mention any specifics of where I'm wrong. I mentined that hip hop is (A)rhyming, (B)rhymic, ©usually violent or vulgar (now this might be a generalization, but I said usually meaning not all, but most), and (D) are done over a synthesizer or sampled music. Please if any of those items are wrong, correct me! Don't just respond calling me a jackoff.

Guest godthedog Report post Posted December 2, 2002 this whole discussion is stupid. don't say it isn't music just because you don't like it. despite what sheltered white people may think, rapping DOES require talent. the beastie boys didn't sing or play any instruments on 'paul's boutique', and there's an insane amount of samples, but i've never met anyone ignorant enough to say that 'paul's boutique' isn't an example of real music. it's one of the finest examples of music i own, i'd put it up there with the pixies and the who. go on, download some songs from it. 'hey ladies', 'looking down the barrel of a gun', 'shake your rump', 'sounds of science', anything. then come back, & we can have a little talk about whether or not it's music. hip hop isn't real music because the vocals don't have a melody and the content is vulgar? lou reed didn't sing with a melody half the time, and a lot of his songs were about vulgar things like drugs and sadomasochism, so i guess 'heroin' and 'venus in furs' aren't real music. hip hop isn't real music because it uses samples? orson welles made a movie with every single line taken from one of shakespeare's history plays and changed the story around completely making falstaff the main character & making the material his own. but i guess this wasn't a real movie, since welles stole all the lines from somebody else. Guest creativename Report post Posted December 2, 2002 SlapNuts, Obviously the guy is resorting to insults because of you're strange condescending view of Hip Hop and the direct implication that anyone who likes Hip Hop or thinks its real art is wrong/an idiot (and don't deny that this implication is there, because it most certainly is, and it seems quite intentional). He took offense to your statements, as any moderate level Hip Hop fan would. Perhaps he came off too strongly, but don't go playing the innocent. Frankly this discussion is quite preposterous to me. It's 2002 ffs, who in the hell still denies Hip Hop/Rap as a legit art form (you'd think this was mid 80's Arkansas). It's as legit as Rock (I can't believe I actually have to clarify that to somebody. I feel stupid, as if I just said "Hulk Hogan is a legend"! ) Yes Hip Hop is rhyming, is often vulgar, sometimes has instruments and often has a synthesized beat. Rock has rhyming, is often vulgar (though somewhat less frequently) has instrument playing and often has synthesized elements. Pop has rhyming, is almost never vulgar, has instruments and often synthesized beats. Country has...aw never mind, country sucks (j/k, I will not condescend to country fans or demean the whole genre; country is just not my thing...nor the thing of most sophisticated people</final jab> ) I fail to see you point, unless it's that infrequent use of instruments = poor music...? Music is simply art that sounds good and tugs at any of a myriad of emotions. I do think that there is way too much sampling going on in modern Hip Hop (which actually wouldn't be so bad except nearly all of it is of bad songs and/or is executed poorly), but so what; every genre has its fads and copycats. Guest Slapnuts00 Report post Posted December 2, 2002 Well, I'll step down then. Mostly because I really don't care! You can go back and check though, I never insulted anyone who liked hip hop but make no bones that I don't enjoy it or take it seriously. To end this, I quote the Curt Hennig: "IIIIII hate rap! Raaaapppp is crap!"

Yes, it is morally questionable to bash Will Smith for that. Funny though I suppose they mock him because he's an easy target, with his awkward looks and Hollywood/mainstream success. People who achieve mainstream success will always be looked down on and be the target of the barbs from "diehard"/"hardcore" fans and performers. Not to mention the fact that he's had mostly crap for years. Everybody marks for "Parents just don't Understand!" though, right

Guest Brian Report post Posted December 2, 2002 I personally hate all rap and hip hop and the current music scene, but Tupac was a genius in his time period. He wrote a lot of great lyrics and poetry that said more than just sex and violence, which seems to dominate mainstream now. He was just a very smart individual for that business and it's really a shame that it never really went anywhere from there. Reminds me of Ohtani and Samurai. Guest Kamui Report post Posted December 2, 2002 Great way to get off-topic, guys. I think hip-hop is crap too, I don't care what you have to say. I'm generalizing because I DON'T LIKE THE FUCKING MUSIC. It's about personal preference, guys. You can call rock crap all you want, I don't care, that's your PERSONAL DECISION. -Duo Geez, some people are stupid.
Guest Anglesault Report post Posted December 2, 2002 And some white people wonder why other races can't stand them. This has nothing to do with race. I can't stand Eminem, and there are alot of black musicians that I do enjoy listening to.
Guest The Hamburglar Report post Posted December 2, 2002 Most hip-hop these days is crap, but that's mostly due to this horrible cross-breeding of pop and rap that has occurred, which has majorly fucked up both genres. A good pop song, and yes there are a few, simply cannot survive having its rhythm destroyed in the middle of the song by a sub-standard rapping segment. On the other side of the coin, pop's influence on rap and hip-hop has been to unleash a horde of vacuous pop rappers (Nelly, Ja Rule) loose on the music world. These people don't even rap about anything. That said, hip-hp/rap is the best form of music to impart lyrics, even if most artists don't use it as such. But when someone uses hip-hop to say something or tell a decent story with their lyrics then it really works. The vast majority of rock music lyrics are crap, even those written by good bands. One of the best albums I've heard this year was by a British garage group called the Streets. The difference with them is that the MC-ing,(I wouldn't call it rapping) is done by a white guy with a really thick London accent. This alone is enough to create what sounds like something completely novel. Luckily, the lyrics are some of the most intelligent I've heard in a long while, and the album as a whole is a really fulfilling listen. I'm sure true hip-hop fans can point out a lot of other artists who fit this type of bill as well. To say its not music is simply narrow-minded and stupid. Guest Brian Report post Posted December 3, 2002 The best CD I've heard this year was Sprinsteen's, even though it was somewhat dark.
