Frank Black and the Catholics - Black Letter Days

this is my album of the year. The most underrated artist out there as far as i'm concerned, with his solo stuff being invariably compared to the pixies, and never appreciated as free standing work. It's a different style of music, and if you listen to all his solo stuff you can tell he's evolving STILL, with the brand of country-rock-but-better he established with the also genius Dog in The Sand being showcased in a variety of ways, with the ROCKING jam '1826' through to mellow numbers like 'the farewell bend'. Oh and there's two versions of Tom Waits' 'the black rider' to start and finish. Oh and he's the best gig i have ever been to in my life, ever. I still think he stopped time for a while, playing about 10,000 songs from his solo catalogue and plenty of SWANK pixies stuff (gouge away live is godlike, trust me). If you can find this album (i dunno if it's out in the US) I cannot recommend it enough.

***<o>***

I recently purchased this album, and to be honest, I didn't like it that much. I didn't hate it, but it was just kind of there. It just felt... I don't know... very typical. Like there really wasn't anything interesting going on with this album at all. I liked the Tom Waits covers that begin and end it, but there's just a whole lot of generic rock in between. At least in my rarely if ever humble opinion.

I feel as though it should sound just like generic rock too, but his voice and a-typical chord changes and riffs just reel me in somehow. Upon my first listen it dragged a bit, but now i rarely go a day without listening to it, months after i got it. I am a COMPLETE Frank Black mark however, i'll have to admit that.

BionicRedneck has the right idea.

Mind if I ask why you picked Dirt over Appetite?

24.Faith No More-The Real Thing

That's a great album, but as far as Faith No More goes, I think King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime is as good as it gets. Mike Patton is at his best on this album. He is my vocal GOD.

Because it's better.

I'll ignore most of the remaining selections not involving Tool, but of those two, I can say with no qualms that Dirt is a better album than Appetite. A neater sound, Staley's incredible vocals, great songwriting. It's all there.

Taking nothing away from AFD, because it is by all rights a great album, but am I the only one here that gets a little burnt out on Sweet Child O Mine and Paradise City? There's other good tracks on that album, but everything kind of stands out like it's a collection of singles like a greatest hits, since well, nothing else they've ever done is worth a shit to me. Dirt's just a fantastic chronicle of drug abuse and depression masterfully put together.

I have to support bionic's soundgarden selections as well, cos i never cared for all the rest of the grunge shit (nirvana, pearl jam etc).

Badmotorfinger has some really good material on it especially, I think.

yeah, i think there's classics on all of em, and down on the upside, whilst perhaps a little more generic than the rest, doesn't get the recognition it deserves IMO.

My current top 17:

1. Big Black - Pigpile - Quite simply the most 'punk' feeling album ever, ad thus the only live album that really feels live.

2. Mission of Burma - Signals, Calls and Marches

3. Black Flag - Damaged

4. Bad Brains - I against I

5. The Pixies - Doolittle

6. Embrace - s/t - Best of the Ian McKaye bands IMO

7. Queens of the Stone Age - Rated R

8. X - Los Angeles

9. Rites of Spring - End on End

10. At The Drive In - In Casino Out

11. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

12. Nirvana - In Utero - the end to which US 80's underground punk/indie was the means.

13. Husker Du - Candy Apple Gray

14. OutQueens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf

15. Alice in Chains - Facelift

16. Rancid - And Out Come the Wolves

17. Quicksand - Manic Compression

Ian

Angel Dust does contain Faith No More's greatest song EVER in "Smaller & Smaller", but I still prefer King for a Day....

The only complaint I ever had with Down on the Upside is that it sounded a little too "poppy" for me. Although "Blow Up the Outside World" is masterful. I love that bassline.

I don't mind at all :)

I don't really know why, I just think it's a better album, or at least I enjoy it more.
