EL DANDY~!

I'm a lifelong Giants fan...

Leave it up to the creative genius that is Brian Sabean to make me, the Giants consumer, to feel absolutely stupid. Today, in a brilliant move, they don't offer arbitration to either Reggie Sanders OR Kenny Lofton. And in a way to further spit in the face of Jeff Kent, an MVP from two years ago and a legit 30-100 guy until he retires, they go out and sign center fielder Marquis Grissom, who can't do anything close to what Lofton can do, and then sign second baseman Ray Durham, meaning that Kent is probably not even going to resign after the Giants offered him arbitration. This makes me feel disgusted to know that instead of having Lofton, Aurillia, Kent, and then Bonds to start my lineup off, I'll have Durham, Grissom, Aurillia, and then Bonds. Not exactly the 100 homers to start off a lineup like my NL champs the year prior. Man, sometimes being a baseball fan sucks...

Why is that so bad? Sanders is 35, and Lofton is 36. Both are on their way downhill.

Durham can play CF as well, leaving Jeff Kent to play second. Of course, Jeff Kent could easily play first as well. Grissom probably won't start. He'll be a backup center fielder. As long as the Giants have Bonds, I wouldn't worry too much.

Durham is able to not only play at second, but most of the infield positions and corner outfield, so Kent still has a shot there. IMO, he's a perfect pick-up. And Grissom is going to platoon anyway...

Sure Durham won't light up to Kent's proportions, but his speed (along with Grissom) helps an slooooowwww team. His versatility will allow JT Snow and others to sit on the bench on certain days, and maybe fill the void of David Bell, until the Giants puts their faith in Pedro Feliz .

I just don't see Sabean giving Kent $12 million a year. I mean, if they don't, then that's a whole lot of production going down the toilet. Kent HAS to be resigned. If they don't sign him back, that means BOTH Baker and Kent are gone. Kent is a great player and an asset to this team. I say you lock him up like you did with Bonds. Give him 4 years at $50 million. That's how I would do it. That way, Bonds and him will both be free agents, and that way, we'll all be happy.

From another life-long Giants fan, I don't think this is so bad.

I was at first taken aback by the Durham signing, but I raltionalize it by saying he could play in the outfield or at third. Kent's signing is still a possibility.

Another unique scenario is that they could essentially trade off days at 1st and Second. I don'y like it (since J.T. Snow is my favorite player), but Kent can play first while Durham plays second.
