Guest jester Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Considering he jobbed to Rock, HHH, Undertaker, Angle and Brock and worked a midcard feud to get Edge over- I think he deserves some credit Nope, not enough for me. When he gets squashed by Jackie, maybe then I think he's done his penance. But probably not.
Guest bob_barron Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Done his penance?? The guy who helped wrestling become main stream, helped make Wrestlemania what it is today, the guy who made so many watch wrestling and then we he finally realised it was not his time did job after job to help get the next generation over needs to 'serve his penance'?
Guest jester Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Done his penance?? The guy who helped wrestling become main stream, helped make Wrestlemania what it is today, the guy who made so many watch wrestling and then we he finally realised it was not his time did job after job to help get the next generation over needs to 'serve his penance'? Hogan's contributions to the business of wrestling are undeniable, but understand this: I HATE Hogan. Always have, even when I was young, dumb, and a total mark. Hogan has given me NO pleasure while watching wrestling. Ok, maybe when he stalled on the Undertaker's bike and looked like an idiot, but that's all. And as I acknowledged, I understand that I am in the minority on this one. I understand that plenty of people still love him. I am just not one of them. Also, Hogan may have jobbed for a few big names since returning, but he held on to the top spot long after it was time to go. And I am also not convinced he has seen the light. I find these stories of him wanting to pin the then undefeated Lesnar at their next meeting all too believable.
Secret Agent Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 Hogan was "hoging" the Main Event because he was and still would be a draw. Vince stuck him there anyways. I guess noone on these boards ever pay attention to the crowd's reaction to Hogan. If you did that would tell you right there why Hogan was Main Eventing.
Guest creativename Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 "Or they could stick him in decent feuds, not have him wrestle on every show, and have him feud with wrestlers who can have good matches with him IE Kurt Angle" I noticed you used the world "good." I don't think that it means what you think it means. "Inconceivable!!!" I'd just like to add that I HATED Hogan when I was a young kid. I was a huge wrestling fan back in the late 80's. And just like Jester, even though I was a complete and utter mark, I couldn't stand the orange fuckwit. Some part of my mark self realized how the guy was holding down my faves (e.g., Savage, Mr. Perfect). And it was *extremely* apparent to me that the WWF at the time only existed to stroke the man's ego (sound familiar?). Every single show was about "hulkamania this, hulkamania that". Even though he rarely showed up himself. Plus, all his matches were exactly the same! I couldn't for the life of me understand how they dared to portray him as the UNDERDOG! He never lost, and made all his opponents look like complete fools. I was like, "Don't the announcers know he never loses? Why are we supposed to think he's the underdog against yet another "monster" like Earthquake?" If anyone recalls, the WWF was as guilty of giving Hogan verbal blowjobs as they are with HHH now. In his defense, though, at least he was a tremendous draw--unlike HHH, who only drives away business now. And yes, I marked out for Hogan/Rock. In fact, I actually mark out for Hogan now--is this my "anti-inner child"? Anyway, I do think they were using him properly, the flop of a title run aside. Of course he remains completely delusional, but there are still ways to exploit his legacy. But Austin/Hogan at Mania XIX isn't one of them. People would feel like it was deja vu all over again, and not shell out for Austin/Hogan as much as they would if they hadn't seen Rock/Hogan just the year beore. It would draw, but it wouldn't be as big as it should be. bob_barron said it best: but him and Austin just do not work well together and it all would do would basically be WWE trying to do the same thing they did last year and a lot of people would see that.
Guest AndrewTS Posted December 11, 2002 Report Posted December 11, 2002 I also agree with Bob. And I never was a Hulkamaniac because I never got into it. I never being a hardcore fan up until the 90's, and thus nostalgia doesn't work on me. And when I finally saw Hogan matches in old WWF tapes and in WCW, I really wondered what the hell the big deal was and why the sheep were bleating so much for him. I can understand he's charismatic, and I put up with Chris' Hulkamaniacism, but I have not, nor will I ever, give much of a crap about him. His little tag title thing with Edge wasn't bad though. The double big boot/leg drop spots were pretty cute.
