I've been really getting into Floyd as of late, mainly early Waters material, and some of the Barrett stuff. So what I'm asking of anyone who cares, is to list your favorite Floyd tracks, and your favorite album of theirs. Personally, I've really been feeling Meddle lately, although Ummagumma and Animals are making a case for themselves.

 

My favorite tracks are Careful With That Axe, Eugene since it's really sick and evil if you want it to be. Only one line of vocals in the whole song, which is just the title said in a whisper, then a minute or two of screaming afterwards. Animals has killer stuff in Pigs (Three Different Ones). It doesn't even seem like it's eleven and a half minutes long, which is what Pink Floyd's the best at, IMO; keeping really long songs interesting. Same goes for Echoes and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.

 

More food for thought:

 

Which Floyd sound do you like more? Polished, well put-together material like Dark Side of The Moon, The Wall, and Wish you Were Here, or the more experimental stuff like Obscured by Clouds, Ummagumma, and Atom Heart Mother?

I don't really like any stuff after the Wall except for Division Bell, which really, its an awesome CD.

My favourite song is "Have A Cigar", because Waters (I think?) did what he did with alot of songs. Write terrible looking lyrics but sing them so they were damned fine. Also, I'm pretty obsessed with Gilmours solo's where he like plays one note then bends and vibratos and then does it over and over. It was just so awesome; he could make a better solo with one note than everyone else could with their whole guitar.

 

I prefer their more polished stuff, really. Because as far as I can tell (from watching video's and stuff) they sounded really polished live.

I really like the Barrett stuff. As you can tell by my sig, I'm a big Syd fan. The rough, experimental sound is what I dig. Everything from Piper to Meddle is classic. I wouldn't really call Obscured by Clouds experimental. It's just your basic Rock N'Roll soundtrack, filled with pretty good songs and a couple KILLER tunes, eg. "Free Four" and "Wot's, uh the Deal?".

 

The more polished stuff of the mid to late 70's is also REALLY good, but sometimes I think it's a little overproduced. Don't get me wrong, I still love The Floyd but they got studioized(is that even a word) when Dark Side of the Moon took off.

 

The post Waters era is ok. I don't like the fact that Dave brought in different songwriters to help him out, but, since he himself admitted to being a shitty lyricist, I can forgive.

 

By the way, Mark, Waters didn't sing "Have A Cigar." He had intended to, but he was having voice problems, so The Floyd brought in Roy Harper to sing the song.

My favorite Floyd album is The Wall, followed by Dark Side of the Moon. I guess I prefer the polished sound to the experimental one.

 

As for songs, I'm big on (in no particular order) "Another Brick in the Wall (part 1)," "In The Flesh?" "Comfortably Numb," "Brain Damage," "Wish You Were Here," "Run Like Hell," "Astronomy Domine," and "Yet Another Movie."

Favorite album: Right now, it's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, closely followed by Dark Side of the Moon. I'm also very fond of Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle and Wish You Were Here.

 

Favorite song: Jugband Blues. Other favorites are One of These Days, Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive, Brain Damage, Wish You Were Here and Echoes.

 

I guess I also prefer the experimental sound.

Interestingly enough, "Have a Cigar" is the only Pink Floyd song on an official album that was not sung by any member of the band. I can't remember who it was that sang it, but Gilmour didn't want to sing it because he felt the lyrics were too whiney and Waters ruined his voice singing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," so they got someone else to do it. In later years Waters has said that he regretting having someone outside the band sing it. But, yeah, whoever it was did a good job on the vocals.

 

I tend to view most of their early stuff as sonic masturbation; they were trying to do something interesting, but they really lacked the skill and hadn't yet developed the studio knowledge to cover that up. Once they figured out what they were doing -- around Darkside -- they produced some really nice stuff.

 

I think they peaked with Wish You Were Here. Musically it's the most interesting album to me, and, ignoring "Have a Cigar" and "Welcome to the Machine," there's a very nice unity of theme in the lyrics that I like. "Wish You Were Here" is close to a perfect song, imo.

 

And then Waters got obsessive, the delicate balance of the egos collapsed, and The Wall was the result. Still a good album, but there's really no reason that it had to be a double album.

I also think that as far as songwriting goes, The Final Cut is brilliant. There's so much passion and emotion in those 12 tracks, with "The Gunner's Dream", I think, being the standout track on the album.

Roy Harper is a English singer/songwriter. Alot of the English bands from the 60's and 70's were big fans of his and thought he should've been huge. Unfortunately, he was never really sucessful.

 

On Led Zeppelin III, the last track is a little tribute to him.

I still feel that Echoes is the most beautiful piece of music ever recorded. Honorable mentions go to Celestial Voices, Fearless, Comfortably Numb, and a host of others.

Meddle because it has Echoes, was the begining of the modern Floyd sound, and has a really good first side as well (Fearless, One of These Days, etc.)

 

Every Pink Floyd album is good though, in some way or another. Ranking Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals for me is basically roll a die.

Echoes is such an awesome long song. Most of the stuff I listen to ranges from 10 seconds to 3 minutes, so I figure calling these songs fantastic pieces of music that are great throughout which never get dull is some pretty good praise. Meddle owns, I agree. San Tropez is a pretty pointless track, but at least it's short. Everything else on there is gold in my book.

"Echoes" is a masterpeice. I think i's the best thing that The Floyd ever wrote as a unit. The dynamics of it are amazing, the lyrics, the music, it just goes on.

 

"Atom Heart Mother" is more brilliance.

 

San Tropez=worst songThe Floyd ever did.

I love the simplicity of "Bike." It's as if Syd became a kid when he wrote that song.

 

But yes, we all agree that "San Tropez" sucks.

"San Tropez" is a crappy song, but the story behind it is actually quite interesting and pure Waters. Their record company wanted a "catchy" tune on the album to grab holiday shoppers and other non-fans, so Waters went to the extreme, making the song ridiculously up-tempo, essentially a parody of what they wanted. Also in the song are suypposedly several veiled references to taking acid.

I'm not much into Floyd (I've only ever actually listened to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon completely) but I will say that "Wish You Were Here" is amazingly awesome. I also like "The Trial" a lot, though the chorus freaks me out, because it always make me think of that crazy baby-thing in the movie. Creepy little bugger...
