I actually heard San Tropez once while in McDonalds. But anyway, I kinda like the song, I mean I ihtnk it's better than some others like most stuff on Ummagumma, non-live, and the Final Cut stuff.

Aw, you're crazy. Ummagumma rules it. I don't care for The Grand Vizier's Garden Party, but the other stuff is either really good, or at least entertaining.

Sysyphus is AWESOME. It starts out pretty dark and sinister, and wanders for a while, but in a good way.

 

The Narrow Way has some really interesting guitar work on it. I've been feeling those tracks quite a bit lately.

Hey, just out of curiousity, what's your opinion on the last few tracks of Piper.... Personally, I think it really goes downhill after Interstellar Overdrive.

 

Tracks like The Gnome, Scarecrow, and Chapter 24 strike me as pretty pointless.

I agree. With the exception of "Bike", which I happen to enjoy quite alot, the everything else after "Interstellar Overdrive" to me, is throw away stuff. I like the tracks, but I could also live without them.

 

You ever listen to any of Barrett's solo stuff, Oblivion?

Album is a toss-up between Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon. I was so pissed off when someone stole my Wish You Were Here album. Didn't steal anything else. At least they had taste, I guess.

 

And best song, for me it's a toss-up between Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here and Time.

 

But it doesn't matter, in the end, because they're just quite awesome, and that's all that counts really.

I've got a vinyl copy of The Madcap Laughs stashed away in a box someplace. I don't have a turntable anymore, so I can't listen to my meager, if decent, record collection. I don't really remember it too well.

I think I mentioned it earlier, but Roy Harper is the vocalist on "Have A Cigar."

 

I also think that as far as songwriting goes, The Final Cut is brilliant. There's so much passion and emotion in those 12 tracks, with "The Gunner's Dream", I think, being the standout track on the album.

Ah, but one of Gilmour's criticisms that I agree with about Waters, leads directly into Final Cut. And that's Roger became more and more topical and specific with his lyrics, where Gilmour felt that the band shouldn't do songs that could sound dated. He preferred the songs that allowed the listeners mind to adapt the lyrics to their own thoughts.

 

Basically Floyd breaks down like this:

Waters: good lyricist, less good music writer (most Waters only penned songs have musical backbeats that become repetitive and don't allow for much change ex: most of The Wall, which I do like)

Gilmour: Better musician, less good lyricist (and he'll attest to it)

Mason & Wright: The glue that held the band together, a damn fine drummer and keyboardist who contributed crucially to the sound of Floyd, to overlook their work, and Wright's brilliant 'Great Gig in the Sky' would be a crime.

Barrett:Lightening in a bottle, a shooting star, he wrote some of the best pyschadelic music with literary lyrics and twisting music, but drugs and pressure caused him to collapse.

Best album: Animals or Saucerful of Secrets.

 

Best song: Fearless or Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.

 

And I have to agree on the Syd Barett compliments. I've spent more time listening to his solo stuff than anything by Pink Floyd for years now.
