Top 10 Videos of 2002

Recommended Posts

Guest Kotzenjunge

Check it.

They got four out of ten right. Can't be all bad. Scarface definitely deserved to be there, and The White Stripes getting #1 reaffirms my faith in their ability to pick actual good videos.

You-Know-Who's inclusion is the cause for most celebration though.

However, their choices for One Hit Wonders cheese me off. Oakenfold is NOT a one hit wonder.

It's cool how they establish their cred by posting a bunch of critically-acclaimed artists' videos under the heading of "Underplayed," rather than actually going to any effort to play them. I agree with the selection at #1, by the way. The rest of them I either haven't seen or wasn't all that impressed with. Eminem's first-single-from-each-album-has-to-have-a-goofy-video rule is tiring, and this one wasn't half the video "The Real Slim Shady" was, let alone "My Name Is."

Funny how the majority of the top 10 videos of the entire year mostly came out within the last month.

Best videos I've seen this year have been Nevermore's"Believe In Nothing" and Shadows Falls' "Thoughts Without Words" (nothing but recorded live footage from 2 different shows edited together wonderfully, but it still owns because it's SHADOWS FALL).

Where's the love for Dirrty? There was too much ass in that video for it not to make the top ten.

Methinks the Avalanches "Frontier Psychiatrist" is the best video I've seen all year.

Though that Justin Timberlake *is* a cutie, don'tchaknow.

1. The White Stripes - "Fell In Love With A Girl" (V2)

2. Eminem - "Without Me" (Interscope)

3. Queens of the Stone Age - "No One Knows" (Interscope)

4. Missy Elliott - "Work It" (Elektra)

5. Nas - "One Mic" (Columbia)

6. Justin Timberlake - "Cry Me A River" (Jive)

7. Kylie Minogue - "Can't Get You Outta My Head" (EMI)

8. Scarface - "On My Block" (Def Jam)

9. Cee-Lo - "Closet Freak" (Arista)

10. The Donnas - "Take It Off" (Atlantic)

White Stripes? Queens of the Stone Age? When did it get trendy to like rock all of a sudden.

I like both bands, I am am very tired about how they're "Revolutionizing" rock and roll...they just happened to come in when the grungy/garage/unpolished sound became trendy, like the Hives and Vines, who are good, but not near as good as being labled as.

Donnas...the lead singer is cute, and they have a good easy gimmick going for them...but I wouldn't call it one of the year's best....it's only been getting played for a month anway.

I can't comment on the rap vids, cause I don't watch them...and I rush to change the channel when Missy's mug pops on my screen.

"Frontier Psychiatrist," as well as the Avalanches themselves, RULE THE FUCKING WORLD.

since when did Paul Oakenfold make videos? What aboot DJ Sammy "Heaven"?

the new Kylie video rules, well its new to me, it was the one with her walking down the street then it looped and all of a sudden there were 4 Kylie's walking down the street.

Dirrty does rule not only for the ass wiggling but it also has luchadore masks! Blue Panther & Dr Wagner OWNZ Girl Fight Club.

the reason the Snoop Dog video prolly did not make the top ten is..........Tommy Davidson.

Oakenfold made "Starry Eyed Surprise" with Shifty Shellshock of Crazy Town on vocals. If you catch MTV playing it, you'll notice very quickly that the audio and video are out of synch. Stuff like that, and their failure to fix it, lends more credence to my theory that Dance is being held down. See also the omission of "Heaven" in their notable videos.

The new Kylie video premiered here at the same time as the international channels, which makes it the only one of the four singles off the album that America actually got at the same time as the other places in the world. We were five months behind on CGYOOMH, totally ignored "In Your Eyes," and were about two months behind on "Love at First Sight." "Come Into My World" is a definite ***** video, and I'd say that no matter who it was, as everything in the video multiplies on each loop, not just the number of Kylies. The attention to detail in that video is staggering. A definite early contender for Video of the Year, but I doubt it'll get recognized due to its spotty airplay and that it won't be particularly current by the time the VMAs roll around. The other ***** Kylie video is "Your Disco Needs You," which I advise all with highspeed connections seek out, to see how something Pop released in 2000 can look and sound like something from 1978, yet STILL be popular.

(A side note, the Kylie system works different from the normal system. One Kylie star = Two normal stars.)

So "Work It", one of the most appallingly unsexy turnoffs I have ever seen, somehow made the chart, while the red-hot (and this from an Aguilara hater) "Dirty" did not? Bullshit.

I do not watch MTV alot but when I do all I see is the MTV version of R&B which is usually a Ja Rule or Jay Z video featuring the "it girl" singing the hook or what I like to call porn pop by Christina Agulia or Brittney.

I am surpised that the Donnas made the list as they have been around for awhile right? I think they are getting the push because of Kelly Osbourne wants to be a punk rock girl, proper like.......but not a pop-punk girl as Avil is the mall rat queen.

As much as I don't like them, The White Stripes video for "Fell in Love with A Girl" is pure brilliance, and definitely deserves #1. You make a Lego video, you're alright with me. While I'm on The White Stripes, why is "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground" not on the list. It's a great video, although it's a bit creepy.

Scarface's "On My Block" is another fab video. I love the way they go through his block from the 50's up to right now. Awesome. And the Doo-Wop piano in the song is tremendous.

Stiil my favorite video from the last year or two is still Cake's "Short Skirt/Long Jacket." That video is as genius as it gets. It's masterful. Fabulous. Spectacular.

Was that sarcasm? My detector is broken, I can't tell. Anyways, I was referring more to the actual single, not the video.

They're on there because this is the first album on a major label with major label support. I don't care what the reason is, it's about damn time the Donnas got some friggin support.

Kylie's videos make me confused sometimes.

I mean, I don't know if I want to live in a future like the one in "Out of My Head." Eh, just a observation. At least they gave props to Barenaked (which isn't that bad a song).

One Hit wonders

Paul Oakenfold

"Starry Eyed Surprise"

(Maverick)

Bands A-Z: Paul Oakenfold

The Streets (UK)

"Let's Push Things Forward"

(Vice/Atlantic)

Bands A-Z: The Streets (UK)

What. The. Fuck.

How the fuck is Paul Oakenfold a one-hit wonder? I'm intrigued by how one of the most successful DJs on the planet earns this accolade. But that's not the one that annoys me.

Fuck off MTV. Fuck yourselves in the asses. The Streets are ultimately god-like. Original Pirate Material is the album of the fucking year. Seriously, all of youse dudes on this board should check them out. I love 'em, and I fucking hate UK garage. They go beyond classification though. A group and an album that defines urban life in modern Britain, IMO. "Let's push things Forward" is good, but by no means the best on the album. I reckon "Weak become heroes", "Stay Positive", "Don't Mug Yourself" and "Geezers need excitement" are all superior. I can't praise this group enough.
