PROMO: The Currency of the Fight

Recommended Posts

Guest Thoth

Ever feel like you’ve woken up from a long dream, or had an epiphany? Like you’ve had some supreme realization that will forever on rule your life and your thoughts?

I haven’t. And if you have, I’d really like to hear about it. I’ve been drifting across this sea of life, searching the horizon for an answer. And you know what? It can really drive a guy nuts.

I joined the IGNML looking for answers. And no matter what form the federation was in, I found that I really didn’t find the answers I was looking for. All I did was fight. Someone people fight for glory. Some for justice. Some for pride. Some just for evil. But I didn’t even have that privilege. I just fought because they told me to.

Who is “they”? Perhaps the promoters, the bookers. But that’s their job, to tell people to fight. They cannot be blamed. No, I can only blame one of two people. I could blame myself. I have become several caricatures of myself. First, I was a mindless drone, serving Spider Nekura in the Clan, doing... doing... I don’t know. Quite frankly, I don’t know if I wanted to know. Or better yet, cared. I was on top of the world, ranked highly among my peers... even higher than them! ...in the minor league, anyways.

Later, I thought I could reform the Clan, and lead it to the most glorious days it had ever seen. But I didn’t have the drive. The desire. Once again, I was a drone. Fighting endlessly.

I thought that somehow, I could gain that I so desperately desire by focusing on something... even if I didn’t have much reason to. I focused on Chris Wilson, a man who subverted Nekura for some reason. Damned if I knew. Damned if I cared. I just thought it would help me find some land on his sea of life. But you know what? It sucked. It sucked because I gained nothing. I thought even a complete change, even becoming a dancing video game goof would help when I fought Wilson’s chosen, Tom Flesher. But it didn’t.

So now I am Orochi, having shed my former nom de guerre. I’ve turned my back on everything I believed in, because everything I ever believed in was just a dead end. I’ve fooled everyone into thinking I’ve gone completely nuts. Spouting this and that about the light. I’m surprised no one’s caught on. Hell, I’ve even fooled myself at times.

So... I can either blame myself...

Or I can blame you.

After all, I wouldn’t be the way I am if it weren’t for you. I’ve watched you get the better of me, time and time again. In your schemes. In the ring.

In life. Look at you. You have a home. A doting girlfriend. I have no doubt she’ll become your wife. Well on your way to having 2.3 children. You’ve found the inner peace that’s tormented you for so long, dear brother.

But you forget... you owe a debt of honor to each and every man and woman that has stepped foot into this ring with the desire to fight. And therefore, you owe the biggest debt to me. I blame you, brother. I blame you. You’ve never paid any of your debts. And I’ve come to collect mine.

But you don’t pay these debts with cash. You and I have been around long enough to know that. Money is worthless inside the confines of the fight. There is only one currency: blood. And when Christmas comes around, the most holy of days, you will pay, my brother. You will pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And pay.

And what can I buy with your blood? I can buy my salvation. I can buy my freedom from Orochi, and I can buy my identity again.

The match we enter is the most dangerous of all matches, brother. There are no chairs, no tables, no ladders. No cages, no cells. Yet, our most powerful weapon will be used... our pride. And the point of that sword is thrust at our throats. What will you do, brother, when you know you have just a little bit left, but if you try, you know you will be injured? Will you stay down? Will you do the smart thing and stay down for the count of ten so you can go back to your life? No, you won’t, will you? You’ll get up. You’ll get up like the defiant pig you are and look me in the eye, laughing. Because the most powerful techniques, my strikes, my blows, my holds, my desire to know blood, will not put you out for good.

But again, dear brother, you forget. My desire to know your blood outrivals all.

I digress... I would do the same. If you struck me down, if you found a way to keep me down, I would get up. I would get up because I hate you that much. Even if it caused me to die. If I die, brother.... then I am free. This is a win/win situation for me, brother. Which means I will not hold back.

The debt collector is coming, Nathaniel Kibagami. Get your affairs in order. Kiss your love goodbye. Wish on a starry dream. Because I demand my payment.

Thoth, that promo was killer. I especially like the overuse "And pay." Nice effect.

Somtimes, the best promos are the simplist ones. They're not magnum opuses. They don't have an alterior motive. There's no overzealous dialouge exchanges between characters, no intricately planned pranks or beatdowns or kidnappings. No dramatically appropriate settings.

I can't put into words how much I like this promo, in it's simple (presumably) "spoken word"style. It just tells how unbelieveably angry Orochi is, and how much he HATES his brother. The re-counting of Thoth's torrid history is also a nice introspective touch.

Bravo. Am I the only one reminded of Mick Foley's "Anti-Hardcore" promos in ECW in 1995 (For those who've seen them)?

Dude! Blood is a currency now!?

Somebody get me Zed, a long knife, and a few buckets; quickly!

...seriously though. Silent, I hope you're scared, because you should be... this is the best promo I've read on the boards since Edwin's "Gray Eyes" promo, and that was Godly.

...You wrote a promo? I remember no such promo.

Edit: Either way though, this just replaced it, blood-bank-boy. B-)

Booyah heezy.

I'm kinda glad I'm retired now, because I'm sure otherwise my blood would be being drank at some junction too. Yikes.

This promo really shows how well developed and deep this feud really is. Rarely do any really reach the level of emotion that you guys have (The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Edwin/Raynor), and the amount of history helps so much as well. Fantastic stuff, and the Last Man Standing match is the far better way to end the feud, IMO. HIAC is cool, but Last Man Standing is just so brutal (And there isn't a cage or weapons to help out, only themselves), and the name it self just hints at an ending. I have to wonder... who will be the last man standing at the end of this feud ;-).
