Mcmahon Comments On WWE's Future, XFL/Failure

By Bryan Dunn

WrestlingInc.com Staff

December 22, 2002

World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon commented on the future of the company in an article in the 12/22 edition of The Hartford Courant.

The article looks at a number of the recent hardships of the WWE, from diminishing ratings and revenues, the World losing millions of dollars, recent corporate firings, stock prices dropping, and the World Wildlife Fund lawsuit.

"We are in the rebuilding process," states McMahon in the article, pointing to their success Internationally as a positive for the company.

Other plans for the future according to the article are a WWE-themed wireless phone, and the development of feature films and an animated series based on and/or starring WWE performers.

One of the most interesting quotes in the piece is McMahon's comment that the XFL Football League was not a failure, despite only lasting one season and losing millions of dollars. "It was quite an accomplishment for the company to announce and then have [teams] on the field in a year," McMahon said in the article, but then blamed the league's failure on the lack of sufficient practice time before the season's start and fans' confusion about the non-traditional rules used in XFL games. Of course, all of the reasonings listed for the failings were obviously within the WWE's sphere of influence.

I can't even begin to imagine how awful these shows will be...

Despite the fact that the company was far better off a year ago than they are today...we're "Rebuilding"

"Other plans for the future according to the article are a WWE-themed wireless phone, and the development of feature films and an animated series based on and/or starring WWE performers. "

All of these will lose money. Bank on it.

Too much funny for one paragraph. It was amazing we got it up and running...but the problem was it wasn't ready when we launched?

WHERE'S THE FUCKING SUCCESS THERE????

Why don't you give us ANYTHING that we want. I don't see anyone saying "Boy...if only WWE made me a phone...".

She did have a point. It was amazing how fast they got everything together for that.

Linda McMahon has been quoted saying the XFL wasn't a failure.

And folks, I believe it's now time that the kids take over the company.

Edit: Thought the article was with Vince, not Linda. MAKING IT WORSE that she says this because she's the freakin CEO of it!

I'm shocked they didn't blame it on lack of support for HHH.

Maybe HHH should have lectured the players in the lockerroom before the games

Oh joy. Will the winner be Steph "Insert cock here, here, here, here, here, here, or here for a push" McMahon or Shane-O-Test-Push-Mac?

If I were to choose, I'd say to brace yourselves for Testicularmania.

Alas, looks like Steffie will be taking over the failing empire.

Plus XFL would have probably gotten better ratings. I know I'd tune in to watch that.

I swear to god they sit around thinking of ways to give us more material to use.

And to say the XFL was a success because of how quick it came together is one of the most ridiculous things I ever heard. Say someone builds a car in two weeks, a short time span to build a car, but then when they go to start it up the wheels fall off, the radio short circuits, and the engine blows up was the car a success?

And sinking the promotion by a few months, if not, maybe 1 month.

Good thing WWE keeps pulling shows out of Australia, can't get past the evil foreigners gimmick, and let us not forget the great treatment the Commonwealth Connection are getting. Yep, they may be getting some International money in, but they are working real hard to put a stop to it.

A Stephanie McMahon-run WWE...oh, shit, that'd be the funniest thing ever.

Rod Smart

Maddox and "He Hate Me" are the only XFL players I could tell you. Is that HHM or some one else? I assume he landed an NFL contract too.

Great comparison....seriously. Send that to Titan Towers and all Linda will do is look at it like this:

That is he hate me. He signed on with the Eagles and was actually a very good gunner on punts but he got hurt in preseason and they cut him.

If I recall, this is EXACTLY what WCW did in the final months...overseas tours. Remember when Nitro was overseas for like 3 weeks? That's cause they got more people at one Nitro there then at 4 Nitros in America.

Ahh, I see. Good to see it did some people some good, while Vince is eating the entire pie of failure.

However, in the end the WWE failing will fall on the workers, since they are the ones who get blamed and fired, while management floats to the ground with their golden parachutes. It happens everywhere in every sort of business, i.e. Enron or even your casual layoffs.

And when WWE releases talented guys, there still are the stupid-as-posts writers still gainfully employed.

When they go to Austrailia I guess that's when Nathan Jones will debut, as hometown boy.

I'd prefer to see him as an Outback Jack ripoff than another MONSTER HOSS though.

We need voice actors for THHHE WWE ANIMATED SERIES.Not even Hogan did his own voice. I'll assume the cast is:

HHH

The Rock (He could quit and they wouldn't stop pushing him)

Undertaker

Kane

Jericho (Foolish whiny bad guy)

The McMahons

Edge

Kurt Angle

Brock

Typing that drove me insane. A WWE cartoon in this day and age? Good lord...

I'd rather see Nathan Jones as a Hot Dog Vendor for WWE.

I'd rather see him unemployed, but that's just me.

They should have taken a lot more time to build the XFL, particularly the offensive teamwork, and to build fan support. Quickness in getting it off the ground was not its strong suit; production was.

This is what a board meeting must be like:

Linda: Business is down, let's do something.

Heyman: Well, I think I'm doing a good job with SD and the booking there and all the guys love it and they have great quality matches so maybe if you let me book for both shows the wrestling will improve and people may want to watch.

*Strange silence for a few seconds*

Some random WWE markerter: How about WWE cell phones?

*Whole room erupts in joy and they all start chanting "CELLPHONE, CELLPHONE, CELLPHONE" while pounding on their table.*

Linda: The world is saved!
