Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 24, 2002 We're looking to fill a few positions on the TSM mainpage. Here's what we're looking for. -- A recapper for Tough Enough 3. This would be a weekly position, and the recap should be posted no later than noon the following day. -- A recapper for Velocity. Polk and I are alternating now, and neither of us really want to do it. Again, a weekly position, and the recap should be up by noon the following day. -- Pop culture writers. Specifically, DVD reviews, video game reviews, and music reviews. Reviews should be of things that are new and (hopefully) exciting when possible. This isn't necessarily a weekly position, but the more you contribute, the better. Interested people can email writing samples to me at <[email protected]>. I'd prefer them sent as an attachment rather than in the body of the email, but if you have to put them in the body, go ahead. Please make sure what you send is a finished product: spell-checked, grammar-checked, proofread, etc. I will respond to each person who sends sample submissions, whether or not they cut it for the mainpage. Now go and submit away!
Guest kingkamala Report post Posted December 24, 2002 I'll volunteer for the Velocity recap spot, I work(ed) for 411 for a short while doing tape reviews. But I'd much rather do reviews once a week for an hour long show, then doing reviews once a week for a three hour show. So sign me up for the Velocity spot. Also I can do DVD reviews if neccessary. Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 24, 2002 If you're interested, send along some samples of your recaps/reviews.
Guest Fading Away Report post Posted December 24, 2002 Can I submit one, Tommy? It promises to be fun.
Guest kingkamala Report post Posted December 24, 2002 If you're interested, send along some samples of your recaps/reviews. 411's server is all screwey so I can't right now Edit: It's back up right now here are my video reviews for Crockett Cup 88 and WWF's Best of the Ultimate Warrior http://www.411wrestling.com/videos/article...p?videos_id=586 http://www.411wrestling.com/videos/article...p?videos_id=563 (I did this one in a hurry so typo and grammar errors a plenty) If you want to contact me my AIM name is ConnMan520 and my e-mail addy is [email protected]
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2002 I'll try out for the TE3 spot. I'll have to wait to send in a sample though, considering MTV isn't replaying any of the show today or tomorrow (heeeeey, a poem! LOL) Considering how much I liked Spoon's style (praising the HOUSE GODS~! known as Jonah and Scott, and impaling one of the contestants with a spiked dildo) I'll probably stick close to it. Oddly enough, I was one of the gals (perhaps the only one? ) that emailed him and chatted with him for a bit. He mentioned me (Julie) in one of his last recaps.... Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 No one ever e-mails me after I write something. No girls, no chatting, no lofty heights of fame and fortune. I'm lucky if I get a pat on the back from Dames. It's a miserable thankless burden, is what it is. But good luck, everyone!
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Which column do you write? Well, anyway.... *pats you on the back* I'm not Dames, but I am a girl, soooo hopefully it evens out
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I write all sorts of stuff. Check out my folder--under the name Danny Gregory--in the archives. Rumor has it that I'm also Metal Ed, although I can neither confirm nor deny that. The fact that you're familiar with Kotz but not with me is bothersome, to say the least. He is but a pale shadow of my talent.
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Kotz? I'll check out your folder in a bit.....after I finish with the one Bradshaw thread. Actually, it's not even about Bradshaw anymore....like Raven turned Heat into his playground, I swear I turned that thread into a slash thread. I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere.... Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Kotz = Spoon.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I write for the site, too, but only with the arrival of every equinox. ::checks calender:: Hey, I better get cracking!
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I've recently discovered that contributing to the site is a lot easier when you don't worry about delivering anything remotely original or inspired.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I'm actually halfway finished with one piece (it'll be up tomorrow; no, really), and I'll be doing a year end thing, which will go up whenever I get back into town. You heard it hear first, TSM fans and prospective writers!
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Where is Spoon anyways? And I don't know about him having less talent than you....I just know his TE3 recaps were damn funny to read!!
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 "2002: The Year In Overrated New York Bands by Matt D." I'd read it.
Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 26, 2002 No, silly. It's gonna be called "2002: The Year I Realized Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde is the Only Bright Spot in a Horrible, Horrible Career."
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I'll counter that with a very special Riot Act, in which it's revealed that you've only heard three Bob Dylan albums of 40+ and are obviously in no position to make that sort of judgment call.
Guest MrRant Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I will counter all of that with my own article.... whenever I get the time.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Kinetic, Inc: good to see you'll be returning to the mainpage. I've always immensely enjoyed what the pair of you have produced. Don't worry about not getting feedback, though; I've pretty much come to accept it. My SD reports go to four different websites (and are then "borrowed" some more from there), and I usually get 4-8 pieces of mail about the show. Most people simply don't comment on what they read. For those of you who have expressed an interest: email (preferred) or PM me the samples when you get a chance.
Guest Flyboy Report post Posted December 26, 2002 No, silly. It's gonna be called "2002: The Year I Realized Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde is the Only Bright Spot in a Horrible, Horrible Career." Blood on the Tracks rocks the house, foo'.
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted December 26, 2002 My old TE recaps 0wned all of j00!!!! Ugh, I feel dirty after that Internet-speak...
Guest teke184 Report post Posted December 26, 2002 I'll counter that with a very special Riot Act, in which it's revealed that you've only heard three Bob Dylan albums of 40+ and are obviously in no position to make that sort of judgment call. I'll say this much... Bob Dylan is probably the only singer/songwriter I've ever heard of who writes great stuff but can't perform it as well as the people who do covers of it. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 26, 2002 Depends on what time period you're basing that on. At 60, his vocals aren't what they once were. But in his heyday, he had an extraordinarily expressive voice that could wring layers of meaning out of every line when he wanted it to. That's as opposed to, say, Peter, Paul, and Mary, the Byrds, Joan Baez, The Band, Guns N Roses, and scores of others who have covered Dylan songs without doing them justice. Some are better than others, but few Dylan covers have ever matched the original versions. But, as always with myself and people who don't care for Dylan, we're just going to have to agree to disagree about you being a boorish oaf with no ear for talent. Guest teke184 Report post Posted December 27, 2002 When I say that, I mainly mean that Hendrix, Clapton, etc. have covered songs such as Knockin' On Heaven's Door and All Along The Watchtower and brought them FAR past what Bob's nasal voice was capable of. While this may not be a vast array of songs covered better by others, it's still more than most artists I can think of who are NEVER covered better by someone else. Granted, Clapton and Hendrix are two of ten best singers/performers in history in my book, but Dylan usually wasn't able to hack it vocally in comparison to his songwriting ability. Hell... I like Dylan but it's almost parody when I start listening to something like Like A Rollin' Stone because it exposes how bad his voice can be. "Ya... she wen' to da fines' schools all rah't" et. all. EDIT- This is based off of his recordings from the 1960's and 1970's, NOT his recordings since he quit smoking and his voice actually got worse than it was then. Guest Incandenza Report post Posted December 27, 2002 I like Blonde on Blonde. There's some great songs on there. I just don't think Bob Dylan is the bee's knees. His voice doesn't bother me, and while he's a fine wordsmith, I think Tom Waits and Lou Reed have both written lyrics that are as beautiful and poetic as any of the Dylan I've encountered. ::goes back to writing new column::
Guest Kinetic Report post Posted December 27, 2002 His current voice is more the product of age than anything else. He quit smoking in the late sixties and his Nashville Skyline voice is often attributed to that, although it's pretty common knowledge that his nasal voice is a put-on originally designed to make himself sound like Woody Guthrie. Again, we're all going to have to agree to disagree here, but the only lyricist I've encountered who could hold a candle to Dylan is Leonard Cohen. I respect the talents of many other lyricists, but if I was going to have someone write me a musical eulogy, it'd definitely be one of those two. And, for the record, Dylan is just as good a singer as Caruso and he can hold his breath twice as long.
Guest Retro Rob Report post Posted December 30, 2002 Kinetic, here is what I noticed about feedback. People LOVE to point all of your errors and mistakes no matter how big or small, SO start inersting errors on purpose every now and then. Keep in mind that my Confidential reviews go up on five different sites and that is essentially the only feedback I get. Once in a blue moon someone will comment on a joke of mine being funny, but that is very rare.
