Guest The Hollywood Fashion Plate Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 OK, so I just watched Spider-Man on DVD and was fascinated with the director's vision of what pro wrestling is. So I'm wondering, what is the best portrayal of pro wrestling on TV, in movies, or anywhere else. I'm not talking about an offhand reference to Hulk Hogan in some song, I'm talking about how a show/film/etc. portrays wrestlers, arenas, wrestling matches, that sort of thing. (BTW, I marked out when I saw Bruce Campbell as the ring announcer in Spider-Man with his gold suit and gray Oakleys. )
Guest eiker_ir Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 i guess Ready to Rumble but that's to obvious... i gotta think abou it....
Guest J*ingus Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 Well, not counting documentaries, there ain't much to work with, fictional wrestling films have always been pretty bad. Well, there was about a 90 second stretch in Ready to Rumble that was okay, showing some of the backstage intrigue and then DDP and whoever calling the first half of their match, that was close.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 Aside from that 2-minute stretch in Ready To Rumble, all non-documentary wrestling movies have been pretty bad. As for the WORST...Backyard Dogs and Body Slam, for different reasons. Backyard Dogs tries to portray backyard wrestlers as real legitimate fighters with professional rings built in their backyard 85% of the time, with money being paid to whoever works the card, PPVs being held live, and business partnerships with real promotions. Ugh... Body Slam was just...BLECH...
Guest converge241 Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 but...body slam has tanya roberts
Yuna_Firerose Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 Best portrayal of wrestling in a movie......... Well, almost any action movie has some "hollywood fighting", which I consider pro wrestling anyways. The "fight" between Austin Powers and Mini Me in Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me, was......interesting. It was your typical big man/little man squash.....'cept the lil guy (Mini Me) was squashing the big guy (Austin)!! EDIT: Heeeeey, I'm on Velocity now! I'm movin' up in the ranks!
Guest Lemon Drop Kid Posted December 27, 2002 Report Posted December 27, 2002 I thought it was neat that a mainstream hit song like Weezer's "El Scorcho" contained the line "Watching Grunge leg-drop New Jack through the press table"
Guest eiker_ir Posted December 29, 2002 Report Posted December 29, 2002 i forgot about Shrek, he does a nice suplex you know...
Guest Ravenbomb Posted December 29, 2002 Report Posted December 29, 2002 Shrek would get pushed quick in WWF. He has a great dropkick and he's a hoss bah gawd! My vote goes to the episode of Ren and Stimpy. "I LIKE BOTH OF YOU GUYS! I LIKE YOU AND YOU!"
Guest The Electrifyer Posted December 29, 2002 Report Posted December 29, 2002 Yeah, Shrek was a totally awesome wrestler. Too bad he's green.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted December 29, 2002 Report Posted December 29, 2002 Electrifyer, that was painfully bad. But I still laughed. The kids cartoon ULTIMATE MUSCLE is pretty good. Kid Muscle had to wrestle his dad, Muscle-Man (or something like that), and Kid Muscle was telling spots to his dad while in restholds. Plus, they use pretty realistic-looking moves, albeit with funny-as-hell names (and the farting contest in the ring, but that's something else altogether). Kid Muslce finished his dad off with what is probably a Ganso Bomb, but he called something else. The artwork on the individual wrestlers is pretty keen.
