Best/Worst Movie Based on a Video Game

Recommended Posts

Guest Renegade

Worst:

Mario

SF the movie, being a hardcore SF mark you have no idea how much it hurt to watch.

Second mortal combat movie, they tried to cram so many people into the game it backfired so badly. Plus the whole animality fight sequence, what the hell were they thinking.

Best:

The first Mortal Kombat movie, a great adaptation of the game with good action sequences.

Others....hmmm do Anime adaptations count?

The first Mortal Kombat is definitely one of, if not, the best video game-to-movie adaptation ever.

EDIT:

I'm still waiting for a movie about COMIX ZONE, GOD DAMMIT~!

Resident Evil wasn't too bad cause it had Milla in it. All the rest of them sucked.

Ballistics wasn't based on a game. The game just ended up coming out before the movie did.

Street Fighter was so bad, it was good.

Did anyone ever see a movie where these kids go play in this Super Mario Bros. 3 game tournament? That was a pretty stupid movie.

Yeah I think it was called "The Wizard" or something like that.

They played Double Dragon too.

Double Dragon was on TV today and I tried watching it. I couldn't make it 20 minutes into that movie without turning it off.

Out of morbid curiosity, I checked imdb to see who wrote the movie. Surprisingly, one of the co-writers was Paul Dini.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.....can you believe they took four years to make it? It had an interesting story, but I think the problem most had with it was the CG. It was so human...but it was so NOT human. Anyone know what I mean? It gave me a headache just watching. Perhaps it was the eyes....there's something not human there. Or maybe they're just blank. Did anyone check out the DVD? The bloopers outtakes are funny as hell, and so is the "Thriller" video. I think the CG artists had too much time on their hands...

Since I haven't seen that many movies based on games, "Final Fantasy: TSW" wins by default.

I liked The Wizard. What other movie has Fred Savage comparing the girl to Zelda and lines like "He touched my breast!!" and "I love the Power Glove, it's so bad."

I just got Mortal Kombat (the only one worth talking about) on DVD last night from Best Buy (clearance bins rule!). Although the dialogue was predictably cheesy and some of the scenes were lacking a bit (I swear I want to take a baseball bat to those twins that are onscreen it seems like a dozen times doing the same thing: shouting at each other than turning and shouting "Goro!"), I still love the movie. The casting was great with Lambert as a smartass Raiden, Linden Ashby as an even bigger smartass Cage, and some nice eye candy in Bridgette Wilson and Talisa Soto. According to IMBD, Wilson was actually the second choice, with Cameron Diaz originally cast as Sonya.

Also some kickass fight scenes, courtesy of fight coreographer and Liu Kang himself, Robin Shou. Reptile vs. Liu still kicks all kinds of ass, although Scorpion vs. Cage was still good in it's own right.

On the other hand, I agree that Final Fantasy: TSW (what the hell was THAT?), and Street Fighter (despite having Kylie Minogue as Cammy) were awful. MK: Annihilation wasn't anything to right home about, and I'm not holding out much hope for MK 3: Domination.

Does anyone find it fucking sad, that Raul Julia's estate was so pissed that Street Fighter was his final film, that they lied and started saying it was The Hummingbird House or something?

The SF Anime films are very good.

MK is a great Kung-Fu/Sci-Fi film in the spirit of Big Trouble in Little China.

WHAT ABOUT TRON???? it was technically a video game movie.

and c'mon the SF movie rules too...in a so bad it's good kinda way...i find funny how all of them somehow end up dressed just like in the video game by the end of the movie...

and the first SF animated movies was great but i don't like the Alpha one very much....

I think the worst part had to be when Chun Li and Kylie Minogue (Cammy) look at each other and make snide remarks about each others hair style...oh yeah, and that end group pose has to be the lamest thing I have ever seen on film...

Anyway, MK and Resident Evil are probably the better video game movies. I, personally liked Final Fantasy. I think the common misconception with that movie is that folks expect to see elements from the FF games, for example: chocobos, summon attacks, magic spells, etc.

I haven't seen Tomb Raider but I hear it sucks. Angelina Jolie is only good for wacking material anyway...

Would it have killed them to keep the Final Fantasy traditions? They atleast had a Cid character. Nothing about that movie reminded me of Final Fantasy.

I can't remember exactly, but I think there's a picture of a chocobo in one of the rooms. Also the creator of FF, or someone related to the project, is CGed in the movie during the meeting scene.

Final Fantasy would've been passable if it was just called "The Spirits Within" with NO tie-in to Final Fantasy and no guy named Cid to make it seem as such.

New New York, New York. Hmm. I was ashamed to be there.

The Final Fantasy movie was only named so because of name recognition, and because it was Hironobu Sakaguchi's project. It's obviously not supposed to be based on any of the games, just a story he wanted to tell. And if it weren't for his Final Fantasy games, he probably never would have been able to make the movie, so I guess naming it after the series is sort like paying respects.

Is the SF animated movie supposed to have Chun Li naked?

Huh? I saw it and that wasn't in there. How lewd. Was this the one where she fights Vega in her apartment and kills him?

BEST:

Mario - This was hilarious and every two minutes there was something that made you say, "What the fuck?" They took so many liberties, I swore these guys work in the Department of Homeland Security (rimshot!).

WORST:

MK - I'm sorry, but when I left this movie, I just felt ripped off. MY hopes were probably too high, anyway.
