Guest LaParkaMarka Report post Posted January 6, 2003 Clinton Portis. IMO, I think he was better than Shockey, but the Broncos didn't exactly make the Playoffs, which could help Shockey's cause. Shockey actually did have a couple of good blocks during the game. I still don't think he's a Pro Bowl TE though. Then again, what other TE's are there in the NFC that are any good? The quality ones seem to be in the AFC...guys like Shannon Sharpe, Tony Gonzales, and Todd Heap (who is IMO better than Shockey).
Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2003 Oh yeah, Shockey isn't the best TE ever to play the game. Hell no, he has a long way before he gets to that. I've never heard anyone say that though. And he can't block? I really don't know about this, because I just don't know. But how can he not be a good blocker when most of the LBs try to tackle him, and just get bounced off. If he can do that, why can't he block? I just think he is a good TE, and probably the rookie of the year. If not him, then the RB from the Broncos, whose name I can't think of right now. I don't think it's a matter of CAN'T block as much as he doesn't want to block. The fact that 200 lb. safeties and cornerbacks bounce off him is simply a matter of physics (a 260 lb. TE going full speed is going to deliver a ton of force to a safety turning around off his own man or trying to change direction). I personally think that he's fallen victim to the ESPN syndrome, where guys who make a big deal out of scoring a touchdown or running over some smaller guy gets more TV exposure than the guy who throws a block or seals off a guy at the line of scrimmage to spring his teammate. As far as ROY, yeah he's probably it for the NFC. As much as I'd like to be a homer and say Carr, I'd have to agree and say Portis will get the AFC award. Just too impressive statwise to ignore. Guest NoCalMike Report post Posted January 6, 2003 Because the Giants have a pretty shitty recieving corpse besides, Amani Toomer, Shockey NEEDS to be a recieving threat moreso than other teams. I would venture to say guys like Tony Gonzales would get higher numbers if he needed to be a bigger part of the offense. I guarantee Shockey(as good as he is) would not put up those numbers if the Giants had better #2 and #3 recievers.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted January 6, 2003 Well it's Kansas City's own stupidity why Gonzales isn't more involved in the passing game. He's by far their best reciever and should be a major part of the offense.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted January 6, 2003 Also Shockey's playing isn't even what gets him most of the attention he gets. Most of the times that i've heard "experts" gushing over him was about the impact he has made on the Giants. I mean face it if it wasn't for Shockey the Giants would be the same old sleep walking team that somehow has a good season only for a team to make them look silly in the playoffs. Last year the Giants would've completely folded when the 49ers starting coming back and may not have even gotten to attempt the fg. However the FG kicking team had a complete melt down which cost them the game. Gonzales got the same amount of hype early in his career as well.
