Jerry Lawler speaks out on RAW X, and more...

Recommended Posts

Guest Downhome

Just click here to listen to the entire interview. He says quite a few things, but I'm not going to mention them here, and just wait for you to listen to some of it. The stuff about RAW X, The Rock/Country Music, and Andy Kaufman stuff is very interesting to me. I will say that it's amazing how much I HATE his character in WWE, but I really enjoy watching and listening to the guy everywhere else. I hate what WWE has him doing right now, I really, really do. I actually love Jerry Lawler, I only hate his WWE character. Anyhow...

...check it out, it's pretty cool. We'll discuss it when more of us listen to it, lol.

Sincerely,

...Downhome...

I don't feel like listening. And I'm sure a lot of other people don't. So what did he say about RAWX?

Seriously, don't make a thread that promises things and then not deliver. We are too lazy to listen so just review for us...

It's not like it's that hard to listen to an interview, guys. I thought it was a pretty entertaining 26 mins or so.

I thought this was the funniest moment:

Radio Guy - So, who's your pick for the Rumble?

King - (right away) Triple H.

Radio Guy - But Triple H isn't in the Rumble match.

King - Oh...uh...geez, I don't know then.

Then he picked Edge, then said something like "Wait, doesn't the winner get the main event at Wrestlemania? It's definately not Edge then"

Lawler seems like a really good guy actually....so much different from his character on Raw.

I agree, that made me laugh out loud also, heh, fellow Edge hate! Even though I've followed Lawler for years, long before WWF, I'm still shocked when I see him not on a WWF program, he is a TOTALLY different person everywhere else.

The Kaufman stuff was awesome in this interview, reallys says a lot about their relationship and Kaufman as a person. This is one of my favorite interviews I've heard in quite a while actually, Lawler held nothing back really.

Reason why Raw X didn't deliver: All the wrestlers asked for too much (first class flights, hotel rooms, etc). So basically: The WWF doesn't think we fans are worth it.

Yeah, Kaufman seemed like a really good guy. The stories about how he never cashed any of his cheques for wrestling and how his family allowed him to be in LOW2 for free were really nice stories. His reaction to Raw X was pretty interesting too.

I really thought the story about how the building next door was on fire through the entire special was pretty amusing. Can't stop live TV for that.

And his mom called WWE a big mess. Smart woman.

I don't care about that, it's no excuse right now. That was supposed to be a VERY special moment in the history of WWF/WWE, and they should have pulled everything they had the ability to do so, to make it special as it should have been.

To make a long interview (about 26 minutes short)

--- They started off talking about the awards show and Lawler said that they had plans to bring in several past superstars , but they were just demanding way too much for their appearance at the show. He said most demanded a big payday as well as having their whole family flown out to the event.

---- They covered Andy Kaufman and how a CNN reporter "broke the story about the LAwler vs. Kaufman incidents being a work" when in actuality it was revealed 4 years ago in Jim Carrey's Man on The Moon movie. He then said that Acclaim got Andy Kauffman to be a wrestler in LEgends of Wrestling II and how Andy's family charged them nothing for it cause it would have been his dream. One more thing he said about it was that Andy enjoyed working with Lawler and wrestling so much they found all the checks given to KAuffman uncashed after he died as he didnt do it for the money, just for the love.

---- They then moved on to Stacey and how hard it has been on Jerry Lawler. He said that one day she decided that she had to leave and she ended up leaving with another guy. He said that every time he calls her and leave messages on her machine she would never respond or get back to him. He said it got to the point that he called and called and called her and a few hours later she had changed her number. He said that he loved her more than he thought was humanly possible and still does to this day.

---- They moved on to talk about the Rock and acknowledged the boos at the show. They asked LAwler why he thought Rock was getting the negatives reactions at the show and a house show in anaheim where he made a surprise run in and also got booed. He said that he feels the fans think the Rock betrayed him and think that he feels hes superior to them now, and he shouldnt feel that way because wrestling, and the fans are what made The Rock. He goes on to say that Rock feels the opposite and still loves the business and the fans, but as long as he's out in hollywood the fans are gonna feel that way.

---- They closed up asking him about his prediction on who's gonna win the rumble and in a funny moment LAwler responds with "Triple H". The interviewers sounding confused remind him HHH is not gonna be in the rumble and lawler said he thought they were talking about the HHH vs. Steiner match since most people were focused on that match instead. He then sounded like he didnt even know who was gonna be in the rumble especially from the smackdown side and when the guy asks him about JEricho winning LAwler says "no way" as if Jericho's got no shot. When they say Edge he says yeah he could win, but then realizes the winner goes to the main event at WMIX, and says Edge isnt winning it. He ends up not even making a prediction...end of show

Lawler argued WWE's side of things pretty well. Why should they pay an exorbitant sum for a bunch of washed up losers like the Mero's? Paying for the flight and hotel and whatnot seems very fair to me, since they get a ton of free publicity just being on tv again.

Oh my God, oh yeah. How about his comments about what HBK said to him about likeing big women...

"I don't know what he was talking about, he sure knows me better than that, there's just no way!"

...or something like that.

I don't blame WWE for not giving in to huge financial demands for the likes of Mero or Sable. King was right, it's them who appear on TV... it's WWE who's doing them a favour. Great interview. I hope Edge didn't hear it...

True, but still, I still feel they should have had some of them on.

Agreed. It's partly WWE incompetence for contacting them so late (like Heenan) and partly the stupidity and gall of a bunch of has-beens making ridiculous demands. You'd think that they could have at least gotten a guy like Foley though. How hard would that have been?

And his response to Michaels was great. Before this interview, I never thought very highly of Lawler...just thought he was an extremely annoying announcer. But outside of wrestling he seems like a quality guy, and his book sounds like it'll be really cool.

McMahons pride over the fans' enjoyment.

Till the day they die.

I don't care what excuses WWE has. As far as I'm concerned, it was false advertisement on their part. One reason alot of fans aren't watching anymore, isn't really because the storylines suck (alot of stuff sucked in the late 90's too) but because there are no real surprises anymore... and everytime WWE hypes something, they fail to deliver. RAW X was just another example of failing to deliver. One of my friends stopped watching wrestling over a year ago. He came back on Tuesday to watch RAW X, and he told me afterward that WWE had a good chance to bring him back as a fan... and they failed.

I'm sure he wasn't the only one thinking that

I would've wanted to see Mick Foley show up to accept his award..as it would've been cool to see Foley, Booker, and Goldust on a stage together....oh, and he could've gave a shout out to Uncle Eric.

The not cashing the checks thing doesn't surprise me. I didn't know about Andy's family letting Acclaim put Andy in LOW2 for free.

Good job lawler... you keep your job and hell with kissing the ass of the man with the power backstage... you might even get a win over RVD or Jericho or somethin

I guess this Lawler we see on TV is the McMahonized version. It would be a lot better if he was more himself.

My opinion of Jerry Lawler the man (as opposed to Jerry Lawler the ass-obsessed, drunken party clown we're forced to uncomfortably tolerate every Monday night) has always run kind of hot and cold. On one hand, he seems kind of cool and very into the business in all the best ways (mainly in his dedication to the Memphis wrestling scene and his incredible work with Kaufman, which I think is one of the best wrestling angles of all time). However, whenever I read about him, I inevitably come across something or other that just makes me think he's just fucking creepy. There's the statutory rape situation, for one. Then there's the way he used to set up and take pictures of trysts between his "beloved" Stacy and other wrestlers (among them one of the Dupp brothers---their "encounter" reportedly being the source of the infamous "Stacy on a Pole" pic floating around the web---and another lucky gent rumored to be HHH). Last, but not least, there's something he writes about in his book: that after Kat left and he was working indy dates, he and some friend interviewed and hired valets solely for the purpose of getting "the King" laid. Now, as someone on the Torch wrote, if the girls had been in on it, that would have been one thing, but they weren't. The girls worked one or two matches with him a piece (there were two situations mentioned specifically in the article I read)but they were both subsequently fired because they didn't put out for the Lawler, something they weren't hired to do anyway. Not is only is that insanely sleazy, it's also illegal.

I guess no matter how nice, funny or interesting the guy is, he'll still break all kinds of mores and / or laws to get his rocks off.

Hey, I guess he's not that much different from his character after all. Personally, the jury's still out on Mr. Lawler (a statement which, given his past history, may be more literal than I intend it to be).

Why does Vince have Lawler announce like a perverted old man when he could be a good color man being himself.

Because Vince is a retard.

Possibly also because the marks seem to love pervo-Lawler.
