Guest alfdogg Report post Posted January 21, 2003 During halftime of Celts/Sixers. Just four this year: Jason Richardson Desmond Mason Richard Jefferson Amare Stoudemire No Ricky Davis? No Stevie Franchise? They should have two more, IMO.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted January 21, 2003 Mason will win. Did they say who was in the 3 point contest? That's always more exiting.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted January 21, 2003 Wow, 4 people. Why does the NBA go out of their way to make the contest worse and worse every year?
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted January 21, 2003 I think it only had 4 last year.
Guest Bricks Report post Posted January 21, 2003 Oy. They haven't had a good one since Vince competed in 2000. But I was anticipating this year's because I thought Ricky Davis was in it. Oh well, Richardson was great last year, but those other three guys seem more like game dunkers.
Guest starvenger Report post Posted January 21, 2003 As long as they don't have to try and duplicate "classic" dunks then it'll be ok, I hope.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted January 22, 2003 I think it only had 4 last year. All I remember from last year is that stupid wheel and how retarded it was. Has anybody ever watched the college and high school dunk contests? Those guys are amazing. Why can't the NBA's be more like that?
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 22, 2003 Yes, they had just 4 last year, which means this year they're going back to that retarded elimination round stuff, with say Mason versus Stoudemire on one half and Jefferson vs. Richardson in the second, with the winners meeting. It was dumb last year, because Mason and Richardson met in the first round when they were clearly the two best dunkers in the competition. And I'm assuming they're doing the wheel too, which sucks. Like I said last year, they should do it like this: 8 dunkers, everyone gets two dunks in the first round (and not two at a time like they did one year). The top three advance, and those three do two dunks in the second round, or they can do one if they're satisfied with the first score they get. Then we're down to two people, and one dunk apiece. High score wins. And have those 8 be: Darius Miles, Jason Richardson, Desmond Mason, Vince Carter (might as well earn all those All-Star votes), Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant, Ricky Davis, and Richard Jefferson. Guest Mr. Slim Citrus Report post Posted January 22, 2003 While I agree that Mason and Richardson were the two best dunkers in the competition last year, I honestly believe that Wallace beat Richardson in the final round. Richardson couldn't even finish the free throw line dunk, and if he hadn't been allowed to redo his last dunk (which I didn't even know was allowed), then he couldn't have caught Wallace no matter how stupid Gerald's last dunk was (elbow in the rim??? I mean, c'mon! That dunk wasn't even that special when Carter did it!) PS - the wheel licked balls
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 22, 2003 The wheel is basically the NBA admitting, "No one in our league is original, nor can they do their own dunks that would top these old guys' dunks." why would you want to watch the contest after that? Plus, you have the problem with physical limitations (i.e. Steve Francis' hands being too little to imitate Dr. J) and style problems (J-Rich is a two-footed jumper, incapable of doing a free throw line dunk). I say if you MUST have guys copy old dunks, let them pick which dunk.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted January 22, 2003 I'd love to see one-on-one, or PIG between two All-Star players. Stop involving celebrities, and the WNBA no one cares about either one.
Agent_Bond34 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2003 Stop involving celebrities, and the WNBA no one cares about either one. I agree. I don't get why they constantly point out celebrities in the audience all the time. Then again, that's just me.
Guest The Electrifyer Report post Posted January 22, 2003 I didn't mind the 3-on-3 last year with a celebrity, a WNBA star and an old NBA star. It was much faster and funner to watch that that gay 2-Ball (Or whatever it was called) thing they had the year before.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted January 22, 2003 It'd be nice to see Jordan compete, since this is his last year, and he put the contest on the map earlier in his career.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted January 23, 2003 But can Jordan still reach the rim?
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted January 23, 2003 I thought that celebrity thing kicked ass. Justin Timberlake pulling that move on Kenny Smith is still funny as hell.
Guest Choken One Report post Posted January 23, 2003 There was talk of eliminating the Dunk contest for GOOD last year and replacing it with A HORSE Contest...Basically Pitting 10 of the best All rounders willing to play it... People who can dunk and shoot a three... Have about 6 somewhat knowns and 4 uberstars like Kobe, A.I, Tmac and Stockton. Winner gets $50,000 to Charity of choosing. Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 23, 2003 I still think the Dunk Contest can work, it just has to be formatted and executed better. The 3-point contest is fine like it is, as long as they stop playing "Wipeout" during EVERYone's turn. The 3-on-3 was okay, but the Legends (well, Moses Malone at least) were sucking wind like Scott Steiner towards the end. And drop the WNBA player, as she's just going to get frozen out anyway. I like the H-O-R-S-E idea. The can add that and still keep everything else, but if they must, drop the Hoop-It-Up.
Guest bravesfan Report post Posted January 23, 2003 EDIT: Nevermind.
Guest The Electrifyer Report post Posted January 23, 2003 but if they must, drop the Hoop-It-Up. Which one was Hoop It Up? Was it the one where an NBA a a WNBA star teams up to try and gain as much points as possible from different marked points on the court? And HORSE would be kinda cool, there would be a nice variety of moves you could pull there. In the Dunk Contest, I only watch to see what creative dunks they can pull off, with HORSE, they wouldn't be limited to dunks only which could be more interesting to watch. Guest Choken One Report post Posted January 23, 2003 and with the International rules of H-O-R-S-E...KOBE could do a Windmill 360 and then John Stockton would be forced to attempt one...Comedic mischief!
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 24, 2003 Hoop-it-Up was the 3-on-3 thing with a current NBA player, a WNBA player, an NBA "legend" (sorry, but Kenny Smith ain't no legend) and a celebrity from the city in question would form a team (with one sub). The thing you were talking about is 2-Ball.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted January 24, 2003 What's up with the WNBA hate? I enjoy it myself. At least the play basketball in that league and just aren't concerned with me, me, me and making sportscenter highlights. They play fundamental basketball the way it's supposed to be played. It's fun to watch.
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted January 24, 2003 They play fundamental basketball the way it's supposed to be played In slow motion.
Guest Vern Gagne Report post Posted January 25, 2003 They also turn the ball over more than the NBA. For a league that's supposed to have great fundamentals you shouldn't be turning the ball over has much as they do.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted January 25, 2003 Everyone says that women's basketball is more fundamentally sound, but I don't buy it. I think that's just an excuse to make up for why it's so much LESS athletic than men's hoops. Think about it: In college and the pros, women have lower field goal and 3-point percentages. They turn the ball over more. And if you ever watch a women's game, they'll be missing layups and dribbling off their knees and all kinds of stuff. I don't hate the WNBA, and I can appreciate good basketball, male or female. But I hate that argument that women are more fundamentally sound when it's not even true. Guest pinnacleofallthingsmanly Report post Posted January 25, 2003 Women's basketball isn't as fundamentally sound as it is mechanical.
Guest Mole Report post Posted January 28, 2003 Women's basketball is just like men's basketball used to be 20 years ago, before men got all fancy. HORSE idea sounds really good, that would be the most interesting. I love the dunk competition, but there is only so many dunks people can do.
