Guest BoboBrazil Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 In what will mark his first project for MGM, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is in talks to star as Sheriff Buford Pusser in the studio's updated version of its 1973 actioner "Walking Tall" for Hyde Park Entertainment and Mandeville Films. There is no director on board, but the hope is to bring one on as soon as possible and head into production in May. "Tall" centers on the Tennessee sheriff's one-man mission to remove corruption from his county. David Klass wrote the update of the project, which MGM optioned for Hyde Park nearly a year ago (HR 2/7). The original film was directed by Phil Karlson and starred Joe Don Baker. The project spawned two sequels, 1975's "Walking Tall Part 2" and 1977's "Final Chapter -- Walking Tall," both of which starred Bo Svenson as Sheriff Pusser. Hollywood Reporter
Guest MarvinisaLunatic Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 I think that it is time for Dwayne to quit the WWE. Its obvious that he wants to be an actor, and if he takes this part, he will have been out of the ring for close to a year. Hopefully when the acting career drys up (which it will..sooner rather than later), I hope Vince has enough grapefruits to say "Screw you Rock, you didn't want any part of the WWE when it was bad times (and Im assuming it will get better..but whatever) and now I don't even wanna see your face around here anymore"... Bah..who am I kidding..he'll keep coming back for 2 months, leave for a year, back for 2 months..
LaParkaYourCar Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 The Rock in a remake of Walking Tall??? Bwahhahahahha.......oh wait that's not funny at all.

You do realise that Vince and the WWE make a nice chunk of change out of each and every one of the Rock's movies courtesy of the production credit they receive on same ? He's probably one of the WWE's top earners right now (in that he earns the company more money than any other wrestler currently on the roster).
Guest Ravenbomb Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 Rock starring in Walking Tall? Wow, I can imagine it now...next summer, The Rock is...Mitchell!
Guest FeArHaVoC Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 If this is true, then Rock need to put someone over Huge before he leaves this time. "Loser Leaves WWE" Type of Match. Heel Rocky doing the job for a Babyface Jericho would be Great. We all know damn well he'll be back in 6-8 months later, but him putting someone over would help a lot. And I don't mean him jobbing to Triple H or Austin either.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 What will Rock be Buford Pusser's samoan nephew? If Joe Don Baker gets role in it I'll go see it just so i can laugh my ass off whenever Joe Don is on screen. Ah yes it's great to be a MST fan.
Guest saturnmark4life Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 A shame. Hell, Vinny Mac laughs all the way to the bank, so rock can do as many pictures as he likes. Plus they don't have to pay for any tv appearances for him etc. How long can his movie career last though? His fanbase declines every time he disappears...

I don't think he personally has ever had a problem putting people over so its just up to the writers to handle it properly, which is a huge problem with WWE for some time now.
Guest El Satanico Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 How long can his movie career last though? His fanbase declines every time he disappears... At this point his movie career isn't really dependant on his wrestling fans. Hollywood can sell any shitty action movie to the dumb ass Americans(not saying that all americans are stupid).
Guest converge241 Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 He's only been scheduled for WM and Backlash and of course Tv a little before and after.. so 3 months of rocky

Don't be so sure, people are expecting DareDevil to fail based on Ben Affleck backlash (even Ben doesn't expect it to do well) plus we are going to get too saturated with "The Rock" movies which is saying alot for a guy who has one hit to his name. You just don't act like a power broker the way Rocky has after one hit. This strikes me as too over confidence from WWE/Rocky if they think they will be rolling in the money Not too mention that if they sell Rocky as "Pro Wrestler Duane "The Rock" Johnson" people may get really turned off due to the down cycle wrestling is in at this point. Guest The Mighty Damaramu Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 Oh I'm going to see Daredevil. Affleck knows Daredevil better than any other actor save maybe Kevin Smith. I mean Smith did write for Daredevil but Affleck's been a huge fan since he was a kid. He's perfect he know's the part in and out. And I'm getting tired of this hit and run with The Rock. Pick somewhere and go dammit!

It's not like Rock just walks off and says "I'm going to do a movie, can't wrestle for a while." He's under contract to Vince & WWE... they have to okay it first.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 With the roll Marvel is on right now, all you have to do is say comic-book, and you have 100 hundred million dollars in the bank. Daredevil will do well, but it will be *in spite* of Affleck and not because of him. Oh, and the Rock situation is getting pathetic.
Guest Choken One Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 I never seen that movie before and the plot confuses me. Is it a Drama or Action Movie? When does Helldorado come out?
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted January 23, 2003 Report Posted January 23, 2003 I never seen that movie before and the plot confuses me. Is it a Drama or Action Movie? When does Helldorado come out? It's a revenge tale that's loosely based on a true story. Buford Pusser is a no-nonsense Southern sheriff who jails a group of "connected" citizens. They escape with help from a group of their friends, beat Pusser and leave him for dead, and kill his family. So he comes back and beats the shit out of all of them with a 2x4. It stars Joe Don Baker in the title role, and casting The Rock as a redneck is like casting Tom Cruise as Shaft.
