Guest godthedog Report post Posted January 29, 2003 i just want to say that ol' dirty bastard has a HORRIBLE voice. not that i hate him, i actually like him a lot. but if he wasn't so funny and talented, i'd ask for his head. his pronunciation is awful with that fucked up grill of his, you can actually HEAR THE SALIVA ACCUMULATING IN HIS MOUTH whenever he says something, and even without that he makes no effort at all to give his voice any kind of flow or melody to make it pleasing in any way. some guys use things like flow and dynamics and intonation to help the vocals; not ODB. he seems to have no idea how to use his voice at all. Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted January 29, 2003 You want to hear ODB at his vocal peak? Download "Takin' A Shit." You will not be disappointed.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted January 29, 2003 ODB is a god among men. How many kids does he have? 15 or something? The gene pool has been spiked.
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Report post Posted January 29, 2003 He's also wanted in something like 12 states, and recorded an album while running from the law. King Pimp? Yessir.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted January 30, 2003 Michael Stipe Ron Sexsmith (suits his sound perfectly) Jeff Tweedy Euros Childs (an aquired taste but very distinctive to his band's sound) Mark Lanegan (probably best known with the Screaming Trees/Queens Of The Stone Age, his solo stuff is brilliant and is folk/blues rather than rock) Ryan Adams (in a similar mould to Paul Westerberg in his less country influenced stuff) Richard Hawley (very smooth and old fashioned type voice) Mark Kozeluk Emmylou Harris (one of the best ever) Lucinda Williams Neko Case Erin McKeown Ruth Minnikin (Heavy Blinkers/The Guthries: Along with McKeown one of the best I've heard in the last year or two)

Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted January 31, 2003 Axl F'N Rose has (or had) one of the most amazing voices I've ever had the privelage of experiencing. The man's a stupid, redneck asshole, but i love his voice. I'm also with BAR on the Hetfield mention, he was nothing special in Metallica's prime, but these days his voice has certainly matured (it just took 35 years) and the man can hit one hell of a note when he wants to. I never really understood the huge Jim Morrison praise of his voice, however BEFORE YOU JUMP DOWN MY FUCKING THROAT WITH KNIVES you need to know i've heard jack shit of the Doors catalouge and haven't heard one of their songs which display Morrison at his peak, any suggestions would be welcome from Doors fans who know their shit. In terms of voices you just know instantly by hearing the first lyric, I'm going with Michael Jackson, screw the controversy, the man is a fucking God with one HECK of a voice. ...man can move too...however, i'll save my praise for the 'best dancer' thread that will see the light one day, someone has to do eventually. Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 2, 2003 I never really understood the huge Jim Morrison praise of his voice, however BEFORE YOU JUMP DOWN MY FUCKING THROAT WITH KNIVES you need to know i've heard jack shit of the Doors catalouge and haven't heard one of their songs which display Morrison at his peak, any suggestions would be welcome from Doors fans who know their shit. Well, depends which side of Morrison you want to hear. You can go with shirtless Jim on drugs, wallowing on stage, and pick up the self-titled debut, or Waiting for the Sun. There's poetic Morrison (which is absolutely love it or hate it) which I think is best showcased with tracks like Celebration of the Lizard. The version of that on Absolutely Live! is good shit (This might be on their Live at the Hollywood Bowl album, but I'm not sure). Then, there's fat drunk Jim, which you can hear plenty of on Hard Rock Cafe/Morrison Hotel, and LA Woman, which is the last LP they recorded before he died, IIRC. Guest gangsteruwa Report post Posted February 2, 2003 Most of the singers I chose are metal singers. Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) - He's amazing. Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy) - I've never heard a woman scream like that before. Tom Araya (Slayer) - Very unique singing voice. Instantly recognizable. Phil Anselmo (any of his 1,000 bands, haha) - He can go from screeching to a low soul full voice. Chuck Shuldiner (Death) - Very unique, awesome singer. RIP. Eric Clapton - Need I say more?? Guest Mad the Swine Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Brian Wilson: Beach Boys. Anything before 1976 is good. And if you include Brian, you have to include Carl Wilson who was just as good. Freddie Mercury: Queen. I prefer the old prog stages of Queen, where Mercury sings his greatest variety. John Lennon: Beatles. Mick Jagger: Rolling Stones. Just for Paint It Black and Gimme Shelter. Chuck Berry Aretha Franklin
Guest Kotzenjunge Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Thom Yorke, because his voice assimilates with the music at times to the point where you don't even realize he's singing. Have a listen to "Lucky" and you'll know what I'm talking about. And that ODB exchange had me on the floor.

Guest spiny norman Report post Posted February 3, 2003 Out of the women I'd say Dusty Springfield would be right up there. And, even though I know most people will hate her music, I've always thought Whitney Houston had a really great voice.
Guest Respect The 'Taker Report post Posted February 3, 2003 As far as chick voices go, the best i've heard is Eva Cassidy. Despite anything else, she packs one amazing voice and its tradgic she died before she could enjoy any of the fame coming her way.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted February 3, 2003 I really like Grace Slick's vocals quite a bit as well.
