Last time a title win truly shocked you?

Recommended Posts

Guest bob_barron

Angle over Big Show had me marking out since I was happy he lost the title.

HBK over HHH at Survivor Series- I didnt think they were that stupid- I was there and I was cheering for HHH and when HBK won- I just shook my head.

Hogan over HHH- See above

Regal over Edge- I never thought he would win the belt and my friend and I just went insane celebrating. I poured rum all over my head in celebration and was jumping around like crazy

Flair over Jarrett definetley- I didn't see that one coming at all

Wait...Vince McMahon winning the WWF title shocked no one? I'll just assume that everyone blocked it out of their memories (with good reason).

Chris Benoit at Souled Out 2000. I'd spent the last three years knowing that WCW would screw him out of it at ever chance to the point that rooting for him was a waste of time, then he makes Sid tap.

My friends and I were quite drunk in preparation for enduring Hogan/HHH, and we just FROZE when hogan won. Then laughed. And laughed.

Jericho winning was great, but beforehand I looked at the situation with all the other three and was like 'They HAVE to try something new here'.

Bond, in storyline, Triple H ordered Earl Hebner to strike it and award him the title back. This was back during the McMahon-Helmsley regime.

I remember all of that. I remember watching that Raw as a matter of fact.

What I meant was, was that whole thing a part of the match or was that something else?

If you mean "did HHH pull a power play". then probably not. They did the phantom title switch in order to gauge the audience's reaction to a Jericho title victory. Kinda like they did with Benoit against the Rock (I think).

Lance Storm's abrupt taking of the IC title upon his entry was pretty amn shocking, especially when you see that he wouldn't be let anywhere near and title besides a tag title these days.

Hebner and HHH got into it during that match so Hebner hit a fast count.

My two most shocking were within a week of each other... Backlund beating Bret and Diesel beating Backlund.

That last time I marked out for a title change was probably Angle over Big Show at Armageddon...but I was with a bunch of friends and none of us like Big Show, so that was a given. Personally, last time I was truly shocked at a title win was Hogan at Backlash. I admit, I went nuts when he won cause it was so totally unexpected, but the disaster of a title reign it was....ugh.

The most I've ever marked out/shocked was for Jericho/HHH on Raw in April 2000. I'm still on the edge of my seat watching that Raw again. Unreal stuff.

I was shocked when Angle won the belt the first time over Rock. I think it was at No Mercy 2000?

D'Lo winning the European title from HHH also surprised me.

OH DRAT!

I forgot about Chris Benoit vs The Rock at what ever late 2000 PPV that was. They made it look like he won the title, then Mick Foley made the contest continue, and Benoit lost to a barrage of crappy Rock finishers.

That was even more terrible than Jericho's non-existant title win, IMO.

One I'd mention that hadn't really been mentioned was the Jeff Hardy Intercontinental Title win over HHH. Just never thought it would happen. Of course, he jobbed it right back shortly. Pretty much most of the 2001 IC title changes were not expected (main eventers a la HHH and Kane, Jericho, Benoit going back for it, people like Storm and Albert), but Hardy's stood out most of all.

Booker over Jarrett at BATB 2000 ... i guess that win wasnt surprising, just the fact Booker walked out the champ

Hogan over Triple H ... i expected a triple h / taker feud to start up after this match for the title

These fairly recent wins really caught me off guard

1. Jericho winning the Undisputed Title - He was booked as such a jobber coming into it that I gave him no chance to win it. Now that was a swerve!

2. Big Show winning the title at Survivor Series 1999 - I didn't see the show but I remember asking my friend the next day at school who had won in the 3-way between Austin, Rock and HHH. When he said Big Show my jaw hit just about hit the floor in shock.

3. Jericho's fake win over HHH in April 2000

4. Angle over Big Show at Armageddon - Didn't think it was Kurt's time yet

5. Hogan over HHH at Backlash - Never occured to me HHH would be a one month champ.

Bond I've never heard that there was anything shady with that phantom Jericho title win. I've been under the impression that if anything, it was to test reaction to Jerky winning the belt.

Which, I might add, that crowd went nuts IIRC.

They did that finish twice. The first time was at Fully Loaded that year, in the Rock vs. Benoit match, and the 2nd time was at Unforgiven in the Rock vs. Benoit vs. Undertaker vs. Kane match. Both times Foley reversed the decision and Rock won the belt back.

When Lance Storm beat Albert, I was almost in tears from the joy of it all :P

Everyone knew that Edge was getting the IC title at Summerslam anyways. Edge vs Storm was going to be so much better than Edge vs. Albert. That and the fact that I hated Albert and couldn't wait for him to lose the title

After watching my tape of RAW from that night, the whole crowd was happy for Storm to win the title.

Now for one that nobody has named yet.

D'Lo Brown beating Triple-H for the European Title. I seriously thought he didn't have a shot of winning, but dang it Jethro he won it.

Speaking of Euro title victories, Jericho's Euro title win at Wrestlemania 2000 was a shocker. Out of all three competitors in that match, no one ever thought that Y2J would come out of the show with the Euro title. He of course transitioned it to Eddie G the next night; but the title win itself the previous night was a real surprise.

I was at the Smackdown where Jeff beat HHH...although I didn't see the title change coming, I was more shocked at my reaction to it. Thousands of people jumping up and down cheering, and I'm just sitting there like "Hmm..."

Bret beating Diesel at SS 95 shocked the hell outta me for whatever reason, as did the Jericho "Phantom switch".

Albert beating Kane for the I-C Title (in a bad way).
