Is NASCAR a sport?

Recommended Posts

Guest Redhawk

There are some...let's call them activities for now...that kind of straddle the fence as far as whether they are a sport or not. Here are some samples, with my opinions included...

Auto Racing -- It's not a sport, it's just driving. Sure, you're driving three times as fast as the rest of us drive everyday, but it's still just driving.

Bowling -- I'd say it's a game, not a sport. There are too many out of shape people doing it for it to be a sport.

Pool/Billiards -- Not very much athleticism required. Not a sport.

Golf -- Not a sport. It's like pool but with a MUCH bigger table.

Am I missing any others?

Nascar: Yes, It is a sport. It has physicalaity then Golf, Baseball, and Soccer. People never raced before don't realized that it's 250 degrees in there, We all get Kings list of Injuries each race. YES, Auto Racing is a sport.

The fact that it's hot and dangerous doesn't really make it a sport, in my mind. I mean, I respect people who do it, as they are pretty much putting their life on the lines everytime they go out there, but if I sat in a sauna with tigers (which is also both hot and dangerous), is that a sport?

True but Think about all the Hand-Eye corridation, Stamia, Stragey, Awareness that factors in each lap.

"True but Think about all the Hand-Eye corridation, Stamia, Stragey, Awareness that factors in each lap."

Then playing video games could be considered a sport?

Seriously, I think NASCAR is a sport, as is golf. The closest thing to "real" golf I've played is a par 3, and the difference in my swing was obvious from hole 1 to hole 18...

There are three levels.

Game

Competition

Sport

NASCAR and all other races whether they be on horses, foot or in a pool are competitions.

I'd pay to see that...

I consider a "sport" to be anything that involves any sort of physical competition and can be done on a professional or olympic level. Being able to compete on a professional or olympic level is the important part in detrimining a sport from a game or a competition.

Car racing is alot harder than most of us would imagine. Saying something like "it's just driving...fast" is just plain ignorant unless you have experience doing it.

It would be like someone who's never played basketball telling a NBA player that "it's just putting a ball into a circle". Such statements are ignorant if you have no personal experience with what you're referring to.

I am a huge fan of NASCAR but wouldnt consider it a sport.

A sport to me is something where you can directly keep the opponent from succeeding. In football you stop the other team same with basketball, hockey, baseball you throw the ball by them. In racing you can't directly affect someone else. You can pass them but that is your performance beating them not you actually stopping them.

If you consider auto racing a sport, what about demolition derbies? Reflexes, strategy and awareness come into play in crashing cars as much as racing them does, but it does it make it a sport? With that mindset, I will say NASCAR is not a sport, but rather a competition like bps pointed out.

Auto Racing is just as much a sport as any other "recognized" sport is (such as football)

Now..

What about hunting and fishing? Those are not sports, just taking advantage of stupid animals wondering in your path.

I'd hate to bring a halt to this serious dicussion but What do you believe that has changed Society's perception of Racing?

The rise of Corporate Sponsership, Network Deals or sadly, the Death of Dale Earnhardt?

Earnhardt's death easily, Earnhardt put them on the front page of every newspaper in the country. Corporate Sponsership has made everyone have to act emotionless. The network deals have certainly helped. Fox coverage is awesome, but I despise NBC.

I don't think car races, golf, darts, pool, bowling, or staring contests are sports.

You can put together any kind of theory factoring things in that would make it a sport...but then someone could use the same examples and show how they relate to masturbation and how that's a sport.

I don't think there is a fair definition of what's a sport.

but masturbation IS a sport...

Sure, a one man sport (unless you're freaky)...but untill it gets Olympic recognition I'm not ready to call it a sport

Now I am a huge NASCAR fan. I grew up very close to three NASCAR tracks, so I am a long time fan. Now, my opinion aside for now. bps21, what is your definitions for the three "levels". I think that all sports are competitions. Football is a sport you compete in. You compete at golf. I just was wondering, because I really don't see your point. I won't post my opinion until he clarifies his post a little, It might change my mind!!

Games are something anyone can pick up and do reasonably well at.

Competitions main focus is to beat someone in direct competiton with you (IE: Races of any kind)

Sports have lots of rules other than don't turn left.

Sports require atheletes. Not sweaty rednecks. Sports require more ability than sitting down for 4 hours and turning left. You at least have to stand up to be considered a sport. That really should be a legal law. To compete in a sport, you must stand.

There's no doubt in my mind that I could race a car. Not on the level of Nascar obviously. But I could buy one of those 500 dollar race cars, go down to the fairgrounds this Saturday night and at least go a few laps without wrecking. But I couldn't pick up a basketball and play competitively even in a middle school game without some little kid making me look a fool. If I can do it, it's not a sport.

Auto racing: Not a sport. It's 200 miles of turning left, and it's as boring as watching paint dry.

Bowling: Not a sport, even though there are "professionals."

Billiards: See bowling.

Darts: Anything that gets better as you consume more alcohol and start risking sexual favors on the outcome is not a sport. (If none of you played darts with the occasional "Blowjobs for bullseyes" twist in your college days, I truly am sorry.)

Golf: I'm tempted to call it a sport simply because of the ridiculous amount of practice it takes to get that good. But bowling is the same way, and golf is just bowling with longer alleys and smaller balls. Not a sport.

I like BPS' definitions, so I'd call all of the above competitions, and I'd go so far as to call golf an athletic competition. But that's as far as I'll go and as much credit as I'll give.

Racing is a sport. It's quite obvious that the only thing you people know about NASCAR is that they turn left. By the way, they do race on road courses so that isn't always true. It also is a team sport, there is a pit crew. There are also alot of rules in NASCAR so saying the only rule is turning left is just an ignorant statement.

I am from Taladega AL. So I can tell you from expierence that it is most definatley a sport. To say that the sport(NASCAR, F1, or Indy)is just a bunch of left turns is quit ridiculous. I am sure that you guys are just being smatasses and really realize that there are several factors that go into preparing for a race to the race itself.

Hardly any of these sports, games, or competitions are not even in the same catogory of NASCAR, which is technically a MotorSport.
