Hell Yeah it's a sport! I doubt anybody here could handle a car for 500 miles at 180 mph.

Competitions main focus is to beat someone in direct competiton with you (IE: Races of any kind)

Sports have lots of rules other than don't turn left.

Compititions=sport...its just a fancier name.

Curling=sport.

Auto racing would be so much cooler if there were obstacles. Oil slicks, giant banana peels, 3 foot thick concrete poles, machine gun nests, things like that. I'd definitely watch then. As it stands, there's only a few things I'd call a sport. Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and anything involving direct physical combat.

Hockey is not a sport. It's hitting a black puck around ice and trying to be football players.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA!

How in the blue FUCK can you consider sitting in a car a sport, yet not something that requires a hell of a lot of athletiticsm and endurance lie hockey does one?

Hockey is a hell of lot more than just people hitting a piece of black rubber around some ice.

Hockey involves good passing skills, good shooting skills, excellent hand/eye coordination, the ability to be tough and be able to take hits, it also involves having to skate fast. You also have to be in terrfic shape.

How that is not a sport is beyond me.

Do you think I would look so far down at something If I hadn't had to have some kind of interaction with it?

I've played a lot of soccer and I think saying it's not a sport is pretty insulting

Geez guys! Soccer is a sport, hockey is a sport, and NASCAR is a sport. All racing is a sport. Didn't anyone look at that link the guy posted.

www.motorSPORTS.com

It is a fact that it's a sport and some of you guys opinion that it's not.

So if I started calling pissing "PissSports," it would then be a sport? The question is whether or not things like auto racing is actually athletic competition or just games and activities.

Well that seals it. The fact that there is a website that calls it a sport defines it for eternity that it is a sport.

Is it an absurd notion to claim that most of the drivers arent athletic? Yes (save for the Jimmy Spencer types and you see how successful he is) Is it absurd to claim without a doubt that NASCAR is a sport? Yes

Due to the fact that there is no definition of a sport it is completely asinine to say "It is a fact that it's a sport and some of you guys opinion that it's not. "

I understand that, but to say these guys aren't athletes and that what they do isn't an intense athletic competition is just crazy. I may be a redneck, but I am not blind. The things that go into racing are immense. We could talk mechanics, pit strategy, track strategy, and so on all day. All it proves is that not only is it a sport, but a team sport.

I can't throw a 65-yard pass or run a 4.4 40. Is football not a sport?

I can't throw a 95-mph fastball or hit a changeup 480 feet. Is baseball not a sport?

The fact that average, untrained people cannot perform an activity at some predefined level of competence does not make that activity a sport. The average, untrained person could not be a professional assassin, but hitmen aren't athletes.

Something can't be a sport by fiat. I could make a website called NASCARgames.com. Is auto racing then a game, just because I've named my website a certain way?

I don't consider NASCAR a sport because it's the vehicle that gets the people to the finish line. I'd be more in favor of cycling as a sport, since the people in question there are actually powering the vehicle themselves, as opposed to pushing a pedal with their foot and turning a wheel. By the same reasoning, horse racing is not a sport, since it's the horse that gets the jockey there.

I just used it as an example. It's not just that website. NASCAR and all other racing leagues have been call MotorSports for years.

And that brings me to the next point. Tom you said it's the car. Well, you are right, but who do you think builds that car from the ground up. Minus getting the parts from whoever sponsors them, it's pretty much built from "scratch". It's the drivers mechanic and crew.

I second the soccer non-sport suggestion. How I detest that game and the 90 minutes of mind-numbing boredom that goes with it.

Thrill as the players run in circles, passing the ball back and forth. Gasp at every missed shot. Ride the edge of your seat as Bulgaria and Uzbekistan battle it out to a scoreless tie. Good heavens, not a yellow card!

The fact that people riot over the shit is mystifying to me. I think it's just to relieve the stagnant monotony.

If Nascar is a sport then does that just count for them or is ALL racing a sport? Is paying 5 dollars at the mini-golf center to race go-carts a sport? Is two people racing RC cars a sport? No, it's a race and a race is a competition just like darts.

I don't think anything that depends more on the machine than on the person should be classified as a sport.

I LOVE Soccer. It's a very physically demanding game that requires tons of skill and is a very hard game to be good at. Saying soccer is not a sport is like if someone said ice hockey isn't a sport.

Oh wait...

I wasn't intending on ruffling any feathers. I just think since so much goes into racing, in general, and the height of competition is so high that you pretty much have to call it a sport. Plus it has been called a sport for years now. But going to the mini golf and riding go-carts isn't a sport. But racing go-carts professionally is. Because the bulid their own carts, just like F1 and NASCAR.

And soccoer is definatley a sport. That's shit just ain't no joke. You will get worn out in a game of scooer, quick!

Meaningless. I can build a kick-ass computer from the ground up, but if I use it play Quake 3 online, that doesn't make it a sport. Technical expertise doesn't matter here, since it's still the car that's getting the people across the finish line. Let's see them run all those laps, and maybe I'll be more willing to call auto racing a sport.

Nobody is saying that playing Quake on your cpu is a sport though, we are talking about racing. People for years have been calling racing a sport, but I have never heard anyone say that playing a game on a computer is a sport. So then let's see how far the cars would get without the drivers.

I respect everyones opinion, but some of these analogies are just silly.
