Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit touring with Metallica

Well, Loco was also in 95-degree weather with only ONE stand selling water, and they kinda sold-out right before Disturbed played. But damn it was a pretty fun show. FLIPP stole the show (band that looked like a punked-out KISS; really fun music, too). The pit during Disturbed sucked, as everybody was pushing forward, causing about 20 people around me to fall down...meh...

And I agree wholeheartedly with what Choken said. I just listened to Load and ReLoad back-to-back last night (followed by a heavy dosage of Shadows Fall to the get the suckage of ReLoad out of my ears), and every song was better than ANY Deftones song.

Mixed feelings. I think that a lot of the songs they covered were made better ("Turn The Page" and "Astronomy" and "Whiskey In The Jar" can now be considered METALLICA songs), and it also aided in getting more people into older, perhaps lesser-known bands (Misfits, Motörhead) that newer Metallica fans might not have heard of. But it also looked as an act of desperation for Metallica to try to gain their edge back, and now all of the people that worked hard for roughly 10-15 years to find the rare covers on the first half of Disc II were kind of slapped in the face for even bothering when Metallica would just release them all anyways.

I kind of Figured that was your take on that Album...Here's another question for you...

Is Creed an Embrassment to Music or another harmless Guilty pleasure act?

I consider the Deftones infinitely more talented than a one dimensional band like Metallica(yes Metallica tried to do many different things but the keyword is tried) ever could be. Good lyrics, the ability to grow and not whore themselves on a national basis, a singer who can ya know sing, and an entertaining live show to boot. Lets be honest Metallica is gonna suck without Jason Newsted stomping around like a monster up there. But thats just my opinion

Although oddly enough, I agree with the Load thoughts. It's not a bad album at all, and you're a liar if you don't bob your head to Ronnie's main riff.

The Deftones and Metallica suck equally, but in different ways. The Deftones, via their whiny noise, and Metallica for being cheesy and boring.

And as far as Newstead goes..*I* could fill in for him on the bass. Fuck, Kotzenjunge probably could. Fuck that too, A three toed sloth with down's syndrome could fill in for Jason Newstead. To think, they went from Cliff Burton to THAT.

How can you justify putting a Boring Live show and blah music like Deftones over the greatness of Metallica (Pre-Uknowwhat)?

I actrually find the statement that Deftones are more dynamic than Metallica to be WICKED FUCKING HILARIOUS.

Does Kill 'Em All sound like Ride The Lightning? No. Does Master Of Puppets sound like ...And Justice For All? Barely. Does The Black Album sound like Load? The two albums are only similar by the band that released them (meaning NO, THEY'RE NOT ALIKE).

And yet every Deftones album is still stuck in the "let's go mellow and melodic, and then CRASH~!~!!~!~ CHINO WILL SCREAM AND WHINE~!~!~!".

Chino's voice is infinitely more irritating than Hetfield's, and everybody in Metallica (yes...even Lars) is a better musician (when it comes to pure skill AND songwriting ability) than everybody in The Deftones.

Metallica > Deftones

As for Choken's question...no. Creed is one of the worst bands ever to have released an album. Ripping off Pearl Jam, being pretentious, and then pretending to be Jim Morrison (with 1/4 the talent and NONE of the charisma) is a bad combination.

Bah! They are harmless and Can put on a solid live show when Stapp doesn't channel Morrison.

All right I have another set of question for ya..Laz...

What is more important for a Successful band? Good Singer or Charismatic Front man?

and another

Which Mainstream Lead Singer is the next big Rock Star Front Man? I'd Nominate David Draiman...what about you?

BWAHAHAHA. I'll give Metallica some deserve credit but to say they push themselves forward in the way that the Deftones does is quite hilarious. TERRIBLE song writing cannot be saved and thats always been a huge problem for them. Boring as hell solos run rampant, some of the cheesiest lyrical content known to man, a live show that consists of lots of standing and doing "cool rock and roll poses" and James Hetfield's vocal ability to...well...not do much at all. It's just...there. No growth (except in the downward spiral type way) what so ever. They could at one point get by on the aggression of the albums and songs (witness Ride The Lightning in general) but take that away from them (Black Album and on) and you have Kiss for the 21st century.

The Deftones on the other hand have continued growth through all 3 of their albums, started out as a decent enough quasi nu metal band, removed the nu metal elements for the second album and released a Sepultura meets The Smiths then just went off the map via White Pony actually managing to tread some uncharted territory by that sort of band. It's made even better by the fact that they could have easily just said to hell with it and went full on nu metal but they actually seem to have integrity, something Metallica never quite grasped either.

But I can tell this is gonna be one of those arguements where no one budges, so lets just all agree that Linkin Park is the biggest joke on the bill and call it a day.

Ahh I'm the idiot programmed imbecile because I disagree with you? Come on now buddy, it's time to grow up and just accept that some people believe differently. I certainly don't mind discussing music with people and find it fun when we have different opinions, it just makes for better chats frankly. But to resort to calling me an "idiot programmed imbecile"? Is it not possible to discuss without resorting to name calling? Seriously, I expect better out of someone over 13. I disagree with you. If you wanna argue your point, cool, I like doing that, but please do keep the sad name calling out of it. It defeats the whole purpose frankly.

Personally I had no problem with Metallica's lyrics on their last few albums.

Low Man's Lyric, Devil's Dance, Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Until it Sleeps, Hero of the Day, King Nothing, Memory Remains, Ronnie, Mama Said, House that Jack Built, all have great lyrics in my opinion.

Like was said before if anyone other than Metallica released Load and Reload they would be great albums. Especially compared to today's bands. But being released by Metallica they fell short of the expectations of Metallica.

But I still own Load and wouldn't mind buying Reload.

I can't deny the flat out catchyness of a lot of the Load material and some of the Reload material. Bleeding Me and Ronnie are exceptional songs, no arguements here. In the end, i've just never been a huge Metallica lyrics fan, namely because i'm more of a metaphor/abstract view points man myself. But to each his own.

Rather than chime in further in an argument about two bands I really don't like, I'll just add this, which isn't meant to be insightful or even constructive. Slayer could eat metallica, crap out the deftones, and scare away everyone else on the bill while doing so.

I rest my case.

Yeah...but the Eyes of Scott Stapp, if he showed up would Scare Slayer off the face of earth!

Seriously, Aside from Black Sabbath, Slayer owns Metal. I might make a case for Pantera for their mainstream status.

Nonsense, poopypants, Kerry King would gouge Stapp's eyes out with the points on the headstock of his Warlock.

I have trouble calling a band "The best metal band" because it's too diverse a genre. I mean, yeah, they all play heavy guitar-driven stuff, but Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Slayer, and say..Nasum are all totally different animals. I wouldn't have a problem saying Slayer was the best thrash band, or that Maiden was the best power metal band, or Nasum was the best grind band, but overall, that's a really iffy call.

Gun to my head, and I'd go Black Sabbath and Slayer, in that order. Third, I don't know...maybe Cryptopsy for taking brutal death to a new level.

Choken: An uber-charismatic FRONTMAN is more important to a band's success more than a great vocalist is. See: Osbourne, Ozzy vs. Owens, Tim "Ripper."

Ozzy's a HUGE star, and not just based on his past success. When live, he still puts on an amazing show, all because of his onstage charisma. Tim Owens is 50x the singer Ozzy is, but Judas Priest is currently stuck in the middleground "oh, they were big in the 80's...so?" area.

So, them Deftones sure do have AMAZING LYRICS. I mean, check out this line:

SHOVE IT, SHOVE IT, SHOVE IT!

PURE FUCKING GENIUS!!

Sorry, but name me one song Metallica has written pre-Black Album (which I can definitely argue to be their WORST album) that doesn't make The Deftones seem like squirrels to the great white shark that is Metallica.

Oh, and saying the lyrics off Kill 'Em All is TOO obvious, as the entire album was from an era when thrash metal was meant to party to.

I just cannot stand Hetfield's lyrics, even on the pre-Black Album stuff. (Although I agree with the Black Album being one of the more atrocious pieces of shit ever) Just not a fan of their music and consider the Deftones infinitely more talented in all facets, but you believe differently and it's more or less ended up one of those agree to disagree things. No one's budging, although it's always nice to meet someone else who feels passionately about the music they enjoy.

And hell even i'm still curious to see how Metallica operates these days. They're one of those bands who's albums I usually buy even though I know i'm probably not gonna like the full product. They're gonna be pretty bad live though, the lack of Newsted is devastating, everyone else in the band has "going through the motions" tendencies.

"It's really not too much of a stretch to imagine people boo'ing pieces of shit like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Mudvayne at a METALLICA show, is it? "

they didnt boo Kid Rock at the last sanitarium tour

Yeah...But Rock was still somewhat cool then...

and Now that he has gone Country...I like the guy a little more then the Hip-Hop Version....

But I always dug how verstile Rock is.

Kid Rock is also an insane live man. If the music is poor, it doesn't matter as long as the band creates a great amount of energy (see: Sevendust; Soulfly).

Totally...Which is the only Redeeming thing about Creed...

MORE ?'S for Corey!!!

If Metal makes another 80's like Run at the top...Who do you expect to lead the charge?

Who was the most dissapointing band of all time based on High expectations and hype?

Do have any tolerable Pop favs?

This tour is an abhorration.

I adore Metallica, like Mudvayne, find Linkin somewhat tolerable, but wtf? Limp Bizkit? Weren't Freddie D. and Lars mortal enemies over the Napster bull? Fred was all, "Yo yo, bitches, come to our Napster shizow, dawg!" and Lars was all about the money from Napster. :bonk:

It makes me crosseyed trying to figure out what all these people are thinking. I regret giving Fred Durst my money, but I will be going to see Metallica and Mudvayne.

...I guess.

Stupid Fred Durst.

When you mean deftones talented than ever do you mean Stephen Carpenter using power-chords, drop-d to death, and the same inane lyrics thats the same thing. "I hate the world, hate my parents, being a loner is cool lyrics..." Then say...Unforgiven...Low Man's Lyric...

Bass are non-audible at all, and hell Cliff wasn't all that good when you look at it...hell he just got credited for Anethesia, and he's some sort of Bass God

Ex-METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted has slammed his former bandmates over their decision to tour this summer with LINKIN PARK and LIMP BIZKIT, calling the move "an obvious cash thing" and claiming that the group are "not staying true to their words."

"It's a joke, I think METALLICA are just a joke," Newsted told Britain's Rock Sound magazine in reference to the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003, which kicks off on July 4. "I don't think they have any idea. I am fan of METALLICA again, I did my thing in there and felt good and I'm proud of that shit and I am more proud than sour. But that's the integrity down the fucking tube! Why can't they take out STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, why can't they take out IN FLAMES? What they are doing now is such an obvious cash thing and has nothing to do with the music that we're supposed to be fighting for.

"Kirk got quoted about their new record sounding like ENTOMBED. How can it sound like ENTOMBED, how? Who is playing bass to make it sound like ENTOMBED? James is a good bass player, but c'mon, dude! Lars — he hasn't practiced enough drums over the years — he let his art fall away from him, he doesn't have the same finesse as he used to have, so how is it going to sound like ENTOMBED and have that energy? And anyway if they are speaking like that how come they are not talking ENTOMBED out on tour? Or MESHUGGAH — how came they are not staying true to their words? That's what really bothers me."

Newsted's new band, VOIVOD, start their U.S. tour on April 10 and are set to visit Europe in June — but don't expect to see METALLICA and VOIVOD on the same bill.

"There is political shit going on, they are really against us being on the same bills," Newsted explained. "Wherever METALLICA is, you won't be seeing VOIVOD."

*from wickedland.com*

"If the music is poor, it doesn't matter as long as the band creates a great amount of energy"

okay thats what bizkit, linkin, and deftones all do live : create energy

They aren't going to have Entombed or Meshuggah on the bill because Metallica will get completely SMOKED.

Yes, con, I did say that. And I smack myself for not adding on this bit part:

"...unless the music has little to no redeeming value at all (see: Deftones; Creed)."

:D

As to answer Choken's questions:

1. Well, the "nu-metal" wave already happened, as many bands that played hard rock and rap/rock, and were falsely called metal, already had their run. But if TRUE METAL were to make a run at the top, I think my pick is obvious (check sig for details) as to who would lead it.

2. I'd have to say Mudvayne. "Dig" is a fucking kick-ass tune, and I loved it when I first bought the CD (a full 3 months before it was popular to like Mudvayne, might I add). I hated the rest of the CD, but dug "Dig" (no pun intended). Then, "Dig" was released as a single, and the album became pretty popular. The band was toted as the best purveyors of extreme rock today, and look where they ended up being: producing a second craptacular album, and most of their fanbase has left because they saw them live and realized how fucking pathetic and boring the songs actually are.

3. I actually like a nice chunk of pop. U2, Tatu, old-school Michael Jackson, lots of 80's synth-pop, and even White Town.
