Guest RandomMallChicksRule Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 It looks like Buffy's got a strong following here on the smartmarks board. i got a question about what is meant when they mention "The Big Bad" on the show. Is it supposed to describe the main villain in the season or is it a nickname for Spike? "You're not the Big Bad anymore, you're not even the Kinda Naughty..." - Xander on Spike and his chip in "Doomed" "Oh Spike, you're the Big Bad. You're the BIG BAD!!!" - Buffybot having sex with Spike in a graveyard in "Intervention" "That's right, Big Bad's back, and looking for a little death..." - Spike from "Beneath You" There are probably more references but those are the ones that come to mind for now. Thanks for reading.
Guest Youth N Asia Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 Spike called himself the Big Bad...and since it's just gone to the season's main heel...I don't know if that happened on accident or not. And since I can't think of a Big Bad quote...I'll just use another Spike one. From "Restless" the season 4 final, dream episode. *GILES AND SPIKE ARE ON THE SWING SET TOGETER* Spike: "Giles, it teachin me to be a watcher." Giles: *smiling* "He's like a son to me." *swinging* Giles: "Put your back into it. A watcher scoffs at gravity."
Guest Cavi Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 I believe the first time it was used on the show was at the beginning of "Wild At Heart" when Spike comes back and is watching Buffy - "Watch your mouth little girl. You should know better than to tempt the fates that way. Cause the Big Bad is back, and this time it's *gets zapped by Initiative dudes* Ahhhh!" The term had been used in the community before that though.
Guest Steve J. Rogers Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 In the first sense "The Big Bad" refers to the big villian Buffy will face off with in the season finale, the list so far is: S1: The Master S2: Angelus with help from Spike and Drusillia. This started a trend where just when you thought you'd knew who would be the main villians, they hit you with something else S3: The Mayor S4: Adam S5: Glory S6: Willow with assitance from The Trio that pushed her over the edge. Calling Spike a "Big Bad" is probably an inside joke because of what the producers and fans call the main bad guy and he was Buffy's arch nemesis throughout Season 2, despite deferring the title of "Big Bad" for the season to Angel/Angelus Steve
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 Can you really call Willow the big-bad of Season 6? I mean, she was evil for all of 2 episodes. That's like calling any random demon, from the mummy to the mantis, the 'big bad'. In Angel I believe they called the current villain the big bad as well.

Well it is referring to the BAD in the season finale, in that case Spike and Dru and still the Season 2 Big Bads and Angelus was just along for the ride. Slim pickings though for the Season 6 big bad then, the Nerdy Trio then? Their leader was easily killed by Willow and that left the other two on the run for their lives, in effect turning them back to faces. I think Willow was decending deeper and deeper all season which led to her being a full fledged main event heel by the season finale, granted yes I wouldn't put her on the Angelus or Faith level of the major turns but it is considered a turn Steve
Guest RavishingRickRudo Posted February 2, 2003 Report Posted February 2, 2003 The Nerdy Trio were the main villains; even if they were merely devises to kill off a character, bring back giles, and turn Willow heel for a brief period of time. In all honestly Season 6 was a transistion period, with no real focus other than, well, further along plotlines and get rid of some baggage for Season 7...
Guest Sakura Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 I would consider Warren the big bad of season 6. Adam did a clean job to Buffy in Primeval, which wasn't the finale of season 4, but is still considered the top heel.
Guest RandomMallChicksRule Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 What's up? Thanks for the responses. It's nothing to be overanalyzed, i think the show is great and spike is my favorite character. I've actually used the term "Big Bad" to describe my district manager at work. Sarcasm in the sense that everyone seems afraid 'cause he has some kind of authority. Basically being scared of someone for stupid or no reason. Thanks for reading.
The Dames Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 Adam did a clean job to Buffy in Primeval, which wasn't the finale of season 4, but is still considered the top heel. ....It's sentences like these that always remind me why I love talking in wrestling lingo. Dames
Guest Youth N Asia Posted February 3, 2003 Report Posted February 3, 2003 I don't think you can consider anything or anyone in season 6 "the Big Bad," you can't count Willow cause she was only bad a couple episdoes...and you can't count the trio cause they were lame...and if you're going to add Spike and Dru as bads of season 2 then you have to add Faith in season 3.
