Guest Choken One Report post Posted February 3, 2003 This was one of the VERY VERY VERY few Mid-season shows I was even interested in. I didn't have much expectations for the show, not really thinking Ed "Al Bundy" O' Neil would make a good TV Cop. I was wrong. It isn't the greatest cop show ever, But it was different from the fast action camera angle blah shows of today and simple Old school style with no supertech stuff, straight investigation. It's not the greatest hour of Televison but It stands above alot of horrible televison shows today. Hopfully, It'll catch on. What were your thoughts? He even replaced Gene Hackman in the third French Connection film "Popeye Doyle." I caught a bit of Dragnet tonight and thought it was your standard cop show that you don't see anymore, but still a far cry away from the stylized almost camp of the original series. What irks me though is the mediocre reviews... I can understand if someone doesnt like it, but the common theme I'm reading is "It's NOTHING like the original series... why remake Dragnet if there's no Dragnet." In my opinion, you CANT truly remake a classic. If you try you fail and you fuck up the legacy. One reason I like the new Dragnet is because it doesn't try and copy the original. I hope the series doesn't get cancelled simply because I like Ed O'Neill. I thought the episode concept was okay, but it was poorly executed. I thought the old Dragnet was shit, and the show just confirmed how I thought it was just going to be mostly another cop show with the name attached. It was, but what else could they do? Mimic the voice and mannerism of Friday and the other guy (who I thought must've been named Dragnet because of the title and wondering why Friday seemed to more of the main character when Dragnet's name was the damn title wow this was a long note)? The name seemed to be just there to get more people interested in the show than there would be if it was called "Detroit South" or something cop shows are called.
