Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Well, sitting in my history class today got me the thinking. Some of my favorite actors and actresses, I barely see anymore. So I come home, check IMDB, and some of the movies they are in, I haven't even heard about. So, why not list them here. List your favorite (or unfavorite if you will) underrated or underused actors/actresses. 1) Thora Birch. Young actress in cute little family movies, grows up into American Beauty and Ghost World. Too bad she did that fucking horrible Dungeons and Dragons. But she does like, two movies a year, and is never talked about much in the media. Fuck, there were others, but I forgot. Ill post them later.
Guest MrRant Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Christopher Lloyd. Man is brilliant I say.
Yuna_Firerose Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 1) Tim Curry - he may not be as thin as he was twenty years ago, but he still plays the villain role well. 'Sides that, he makes dying an art. 2) Kevin J. O'Connor - Anyone seen Deep Rising? KJOC plays the weasly coward role extremely well, and like TC, almost always dies.
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Tim Curry is a god among men, but god damn has he made some crap in recent years. Eddie Griffin. Terribly underrated.
Yuna_Firerose Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Tim Curry is a god among men, but god damn has he made some crap in recent years. I won't argue that :coughCongocough: Although McHale's Navy was okay. Ooooh...KJOC is in a new movie! Better yet, he's working with Stephen Sommers!! (writer/director of Mummy and Deep Rising) The movie is titled Van Helsing and KJOC plays Igor. Ummm.....okay
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Michael Biehn. He got type-cast as a Navy SEAL type, and now that he's getting up in years you never see him in anything anymore.
Guest HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Ok, another one came to mind. Ben Foster. Did comedy well in Get Over It and I thought Bang Bang, You're Dead was really good. Edit: AND Mila Kunis. She's hot. And funny......OK, well at least she's hot.
Guest Choken One Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 James Woods. Under rated for his awesomeness.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Jason Lee isn't really underrated he just isn't big enough to get much discussion YET. I wouldn't say he's underused since his career is still young. His career just started slowly because you can't get big parts right away when you don't have the "classic hollywood look". He's starting to get more and bigger roles now. So if in 2 years he's still in sidekick role then yes he'd be underrated and underused.
Guest NoCalMike Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Ya know, I think Thora Birch is gonna get snubbed out of a lot of roles because of her body shape. She isn't fat at all, but she is like the Molly Holly of actresses. She has the natural non-skinny look, even though she isn't chubby at all. I mean when I would watch Ghost World and see her in the little skirts, at first glance she would indeed look chubby, but after examining further there was no fat to be seen. Same could be said for Molly, and maybe that is why she is not pushed as a SEXY diva in the WWE, cause she doesn't have the stereotypical body type that Keibler and Wilson have, even though she is not fat or chubby at all. Oh and in Ghost World did they tape her boobs down to make them look smaller? I mean she has a huge rack, but it seemed like they were trying to get the point across that her friend was the pretty one, so she had to better in every category. Her friend had a good sized-chest also, but Thora Birch just has some major guns~!
Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 She looked way better than her friend in Ghost World. I don't think that was their intention, however.
Guest NoCalMike Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 She looked way better than her friend in Ghost World. I don't think that was their intention, however. I agree whole-heartedly. Also Thora Birch looks way better than that girl in real life, IMO.
Guest Ravenbomb Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Forrest Whitaker. Seems like he does a movie every other year (When did Panic Room come out?), and like Thora, doesn't get mentioned much in between. Sure, he did Battlefield Earth, but he's been in some damn good stuff that outweights BE.
Guest shlidgn90 Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 has anyone ever seen heavenly creatures? melany lynsky was awesome in that movie and she is never in quality movies.
Guest J*ingus Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 Of the younger actresses, I think that Rose McGowan and Alicia Witt are criminally mis- or under-utilized. Actors, well, Steve Buscemi hasn't been doing much recently.
Guest gthureson Posted February 13, 2003 Report Posted February 13, 2003 From IMBD: Steve Buscemi: Actor: Minnesota Nice (2003) (Short) Big Fish (2003) Deadrockstar (2003) Spy Kids 2 (2002) Mr. Deeds (2002) 13 Moons (2002) Love in the Time of Money (2002) The Laramie Project (2002) Director: "The Baseball Wives" (2002) TV Series Thats seven movies and a short either in production, waiting to be released, or have been released in the last 15 months. Plus a TV series. Only thing is, a lot of his stuff isn't high profile, by his own choice.
Guest godthedog Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 well, since this has seemingly turned into the 'ghost world' cast thread, i might as well mention scarlett johannson. even though i don't really consider her to be underused, since she was in 2 comparably high-profile movies in 2001. and even though her range doesn't seem to be very good. has anybody seen that gum commercial that thora birch is in for about a second? she looks fucking HOT AS SHIT in that one. by the way, i'm hopelessly in love with thora birch. someday i'll make a movie with all my teenage/childhood infatuations in it: thora, anna paquin, christina ricci, danica mckellar and the olsen twins. anna karina will play the surrogate grandmother to them all, and then the 6 of them will have a great big orgy. wiley wiggins (one of richard linklater's favorite actors) needs to be in more movies. he's got this very quiet charisma about him.

Wiley Wiggins was TERRIBLE in Dazed and Confused though I haven't seen him in anythign else. I don't have to proclaim my love for JLee, he just rules. Chevy Chase John C. Reilly (He's finally getting recogition) Phillip Seymour Hoffman Billy Cudrup William H. Macy Owen Wilson (well known, but underated for his sheer comic genius) Sidenote: He and Ben Stiller are the best 1-2 punch in film today. God do they rule. I can't think of anymore, I'll be back.
Guest godthedog Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 i liked him in 'dazed and confused'. he's much better in 'waking life' as well. how could john c. reilly possibly underused? he's been in like 6 movies that came out in the last 4 months.
Guest TheCynicalHateMongerFromHell Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 Reilly had a small role in Gangs, evidently a larger role in Chcago, and a decent role in Good Girl. The movie he stars in aren't big Motion Pictures, thus I think he isn't appreciated by the masses. Thats all I am saying. And Wiggins, did you like the scene were he is talking to Sabrina outside the bar/pool place? Watch it, he touches his nose 8 times while he scrunches his face up like a loser. If being a total puts is what Linklater was shooting for, he succeeded. But as far as being a cool freshman picking up the older chciks, he is rather unconvincing.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 William H. Macy is underrated? Pre-Fargo maybe, but everybody likes him now.
Guest El Satanico Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 John C. Reilly may not be in big blockbusters, but just about every movie he's in gets big time critical success. He's alot like Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Neither get starring roles and they aren't in many blockbusters. However both are always working and taking good background character roles which is what both are best suited for. They both are guys that when you see them in a movie you think "I've seen him before...what's his name". So I don't think you can call them underrated. I also wouldn't call them underused since they are best used as background characters. Could they be the star probably, but they are best as supporting cast.
Guest MrRant Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 William Shatner... He should be used more.
Guest notJames Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 I definitely know when Philip Seymour Hoffman is in a movie. He's probably in my top five list of actors right now. He seems to pick the meatiest roles and always does them to perfection. In fact, he's in a new indie film called Love Liza where he plays a guy whose wife killed herself, and he's afraid to open her suicide note, so he ends up a gas huffer. My terse synopsis can't do this movie justice. As for other underrated/underused actors, I'd go with Matthew Modine. And as far as Rose McGowan, I think being in a weekly syndicated drama series about witches counts as working.
Guest TheCynicalHateMongerFromHell Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 To you guys Macy, Hoffman, and Reilly are common actors, but to regular movie going shmoes, they are nobody.
