*sniff* such Saved By The Bell love...

Anyhoo...Starvenger was right about the Engel shows having special episodes. California Dreams had the one where Jake starts smoking because his favorite uncle does it, only to find out his uncle is dying of cancer. And City Guys dealt with a lot more of the stronger issues (racism, date rape, drugs, stabbings)

Vern Gagne (or anyone)...explain the whole Fonzie goes blind thing for me, if you can.

Fonzi gets blinded, I forget how exactly, and doesn't know if his sight will return or not. Fonzi thinks his life is completely over and doesn't think he can be a useful person because he's blind and becomes a real sloth and a jerk. So, Richie takes apart his bike and dumps it out on his floor. Fonzi then puts the bike back together on touch and memory to prove that blind people have great talents and skills when they rely on their other senses.

There's also an episode where Fonzi falls in love with a deaf girl and learns sign language in able to communicate with her.

The Eps. on Fresh Prince where Carlton overdoses on Wills 'pep pills' and Will crys.

Yeah, Fonzi got his vision back. I think it was a blow to the head type deal. I forget the specfics of the episode, but vividly remember the Fonz crawling around on all fours cursing Richie for killing his baby and putting the pieces together like some phycho talking about "now doesn't that feel good, that fits together so nice, I'll get you back together, baby."

There was also that Fresh Prince ep with Will's deadbeat dad, who I think was played by Ben Vereen.

...and on how many shows has Vereen been someone's dad? Wasn't he also Webster's uncle?

Yes, he was Webster's uncle and he's always the same deadbeat relative. He shows up all flashy and full of love, tries to scam the kid for money, gets nervous about having to maybe take care of them and spirits off again. Vereen is actually a very good actor and a nice guy. I interviewed him once when I worked for my local newspaper. He also played Geordi's dad on Star Trek TNG.

The racism ep of Different World was pretty good stuff actually. I mean, they kept it funny at the same time, and didn't get too preachy with it.

I remember that the last season or two of The Cosby Show seemed to be constant "this is our heritage" episodes.

The last few seasons of The Cosby Show weren't very good, but it wasn't just because of the seemingly never ending "this is our heritage" episodes.

Mork and Mindy gets SERIOUS: Mindy is accosted and harassed in town for being Polish, with the anti-Poles going so far as to hang an effigy from Mork's attic door. This was all before we knew Robin Williams could be serious, of course.

That was the first one I think I ever saw, because it was in syndication and my mother and I watched it every evening when I was three and four.

There was a single moment out of all of the 178 Seinfeld episodes where they got serious, actually. That being when Kramer was about to get mugged in "The Subway" before a "blind" violin player revealed himself to be a police officer in disguise. That's really all that ever comes to mind though. Hell, Susan died and they made it hilarous.

in the Robot Girl show, the kid that kept her in his closet started to smoke, remember that show?

And Family Ties when Alex got hooked on speed. how many shows are there when the overachiever gets hooked on speed while studying for the big test?

Mr Belvedere- Wesley's friends gets AIDS

Punky Brewster- The Challenger Blew up...

3's Company- Chrissy slips in the shower

Boy Meets World - Mr. Feeney won't reschedule his exams so thugs trash his house and the school.

Full House - Michelle falls off the horse and gets amnesia.

Jango, do you mean Small Wonder? I used to love that show.

I also remember that Punky Brewster. I was thinking about it when the Columbia happened.

Punky also had a sort of VSE when she gets a race car instead of a doll from some contest, because they think Punky is a boy's name. She takes it to the track, but since she's a girl, they won't let her race. Eventually she does, and wins. I mostly remember it because it was a cool race car and a really cool race track, with hills, jumps, and obstacles.

Nevermortal, can amnesia really count as a VSE?

Finally, not sure if this counts, but when Mr. Hooper died, Sesame Street dealt with it pretty well. But that's education, not really a sitcom.

There's been a few shows where a girl gets a car, or a soapbox racer or some shit and they won't let her race, but then she always wins when they eventually let her in. Bullshit! Why can't the girl lose once in a while?

A lot of people cried in that episode.

It also contains an early Olsen Twins simultaneous performance as Michelle & Michelle's Memory!

Because then girls wouldn't get any self-esteem because the boys would have been right!! Duhh!!

You know what's scary and traumatic? I was in class, watching it on TV as part of a science project when it blew up. Imagine having 6-7 year old kids asking their teacher what just happened with the pandemonium going on on TV.

Wasn't that the last episode?

Most of the good ones have already been mentioned. What about the episode of Diff'rent Strokes where Sam (the red-headed white boy who I recently found out was Budnick in Salute Your Shorts) got kidnapped? Or the episode of Good Times when JJ robbed the liquor store?

Guest IDrinkRatsMilk

JJ robbed a liquor store? I never saw that one.

And yes, the amnesia episode was Full house's last.

I just saw it last week..it was a two part episode, so I'm not sure how it played out, but it started on JJ's birthday when he wanted art supplies, but his father couldn't get them cuz the stores denied his credit. They ended up getting him a sweater or something, and in the end, he gets locked up for robbing a liquor store.

Wasn't there another Punky episode where her best friend got locked in a refrigerator?

They also did that on Full House

When Penny (Janet Jackson) is beaten by her mother and the neighbor lady adopts her.

A professor accuses Potsie of cheating on a test, so Potsie quits school. Fonzie comes into the class and confronts the Professor and Potsie sings some really bad song.

Well they also had a few scenes that got slightly serious on the finale. But it only lasted a short time before the humor broke the tension.

Didn't he sing "Put on a Happy Face" to Webster at one point in the episode? Then, George walked in pretty pissed off. I remember taping it YEARS ago by accident.
