Guest Ray Report post Posted August 15, 2003 I love westerns. John Wayne > all The Searchers is the best. Other favorites: Unforgiven (the last great western) Rio Bravo High Noon The Shootist The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance Red River Will Penny El Dorado The Sons Of Katie Elder True Grit A side note: Anyone else have a problem with the ending of The Searchers? Spoiler (Highlight to Read): In the entire film, Wayne is portrayed as a man consumed by hatred. A hatred which builds as the film goes on, yet at the end of the film when he finally finds the girl, his hatred instantly ceases to exist. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the film. The logical end would be for him to kill (or try to kill) the girl, right? That always bothered me.

WrestlingDeacon 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2003 Man, this thread is old. Anyway, The Searchers is my favorite film and the end isn't a problem if you think about the film. The movie isn't so much about Ethan's rage, but his love his for his family and the importance of his family to a man who is an outcast from the rest of society. His rage for the Indians and his chasing of them stems directly from the slaughter on his family. Notice he doesn't hate all Indians, you can look at how he treats and likes Look to see that, just the ones who killed his family. The initial anger with Debbie is over how Ethan percieves her to have "gone to the enemy," but once he's confronted with her up close, his true emotions overcome him. You can also see how he resents Martin early in the film, but grows to accept him as he's the only family he has left. I've thought you could make a case for Martin being Ethan's son and the resentment he feels against him ties into his mother's murder at the hands of the same tribe that killed his family, Ethan says that Scar has the scalp of Martin's mother. However, I don't believe there's enough hard evidence in the film for that.
Guest MD2020 Report post Posted August 15, 2003 I can't stand John Wayne That's pretty bold talk for a one-eyed fat man... I agree with most of these selections. Would like to add a sort of Western. Now, this isn't a great movie by any stretch of imagination, but if you're bumming around on a Saturday afternoon or something: The Quick and the Dead.
