I love XTC, but I could never recommend the later over the early stuff. The 2 disc singles collection 'fossil fuel' has disc 1 'the good songs' and disc 2 'the hmmm songs'. I love 'the dissapointed' but they just didn't sound that special to me after 'drums and wires'. 'skylarking' is a pretty damn good album though. Hey, you can still call me Inc. Anyway, we appear to be on different ends of the XTC spectrum. Though certainly respectable, their early stuff doesn't rock my world like the era of English Settlement and everything that came after it. I prefer their embracing of classical pop structures and psychedelia than their new wave stuff. As for Nonsuch, I love it. It contains many of Andy Partridge's finest moments--"The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" and "Books are Burning" send me into ecstasy every time I hear them--and may well be one of my very favorite albums. Period.

So much of music--regardless of genre or commercial exposure--deals with love, that it would be necessary to narrow it down to certain types of love songs. Funny ones? Heartfelt ones? Ugly? Twisted? A mixture? It's a lot of trouble over something that's far too prevelant to begin with. No matter what theme I tackle (if I do so) in the future, I doubt I'll pull off something as good as today. Everything flowed so wonderfully; I had a block of music what went from free jazz (Coleman) to jazz-funk-rock fusion (Davis) to noise rock with jazz inflections (Tengo). I ended off with a couple of mellow, piano-based tracks (Eno and Waits), which was the cap to what I think may be the best show I've ever done. Huzzah.

I'm rather embarassed that I used to find a lot of Bjork overrated. But yeah, War and Peace was a long but very satisfying read. Brothers Karamazov on the other hand was pretty excruciating, though obviously very deep philosophically. I can understand why some people call it the greatest book ever written. If I could tolerate didactic writing and one dimensional characters I probably would too.

Period. Fair enough Inc, you can probably tell stupid fast music is more my thing. I'll give them all the credit in the world for trying so many different styles and pulling them off relatively successfully, but intentionally or not they just went all generic rock towards the end for me. I think 'drums and wires' and 'skylarking' blend the most different sounds together with the best results. Top 5 sparks songs that I've heard (not many but I'm still obsessed) 1. Reinforcements (so simple, but SO addictive) 2. This town ain't big enough for both of us 3. Something for the girl with everything 4. happy hunting ground 5. thank god it's not christmas
