He had his own platoon of writers that would read over the scripts and then write him up extra lines that sounded like asides and ad-libs and he would play them that way. Not that Phil wasn't a brilliant comedian with a sharp wit, but he didn't ad-lib as most as some think. And, of course, the Honeymooners are a sitcom. It and I Love Lucy are credited with defining the genre. Although the Honeymooners did start out as a skit on Jackie Gleason's variety show and returned to such after the half hour show itself went off the air. godthedog: Can't you tell sarcasm when you hear it? I think that Americans are told they won't get British humor so most don't even try and like any humor it appeals to a certain segment of the populace and that's not saying that "British humor" is one blanket style. There's not like "American humor" or "Mexican humor" is there? Americans are very egocentric as well and certain references and slang will turn them off cold right off the bat. Monty Python is hilarious. I never got into Red Dwarf, but did watch Doctor Who. I actually like Are you Being Served for the most part. I haven't watched much Faulty Towers, but a local PBS affiliate is starting to air some episodes, so I'll try to watch them.

All the same characters would be in the show, but only one of the actors from the British show, Robert Llewellyn, would have been in the American show. Jane Leeves was going to portray Holly and Craig Bierko was to portray Lister. The show was terminated in the development stage, though I doubt it would have succeeded on American broadcast television had it been aired.
Guest Anorak Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 1) The Simpsons 2) Blackadder Goes Forth 3) Father Ted 4) Red Dwarf 5) Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights 6) I'm Alan Partridge 7) South Park 8) Spaced 9) Porridge 10) The Office Top 3 non-sitcom comedy shows would have to be 'Brass Eye', 'Marion & Geoff' and 'The Fast Show'. An American version of 'The Office' is meant to be appearing after the huge success of the second series. 'Porridge' is my favourite 'old' sitcom as I just think the performances of Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsdale are perfect. The fact that Father Ted only ran for three short series and a couple of Xmas specials has pretty much guaranteed its reputation as it never went passed its best like most other sitcoms. I'm not sure what 'The League Of Gentlemen' can be accurately described as so I left it off.

Garry just whines too much for my liking. Where can one catch old episodes of Fawlty Towers? Up until this post, I never had heard about this show. But I like John Cleese, so I am intrigued by this show.
