Best Example of Music in a game

For me it would have to be Majora's Mask. Not only does it have a kickass overworld theme, but also each area like Clocktown, Ikana Canyon, and Southern Swamps each have their own distinct sound. And that armageddon theme they play the final six hours of the third day STILL gives me chills.

edit: Oh, and Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2's music are fucking fantastic.

What are your favorites?

Final Fantasy VI. Every single piece works beautifully.

Runners up: FFIX, Chrono Trigger/Cross

I had a feeling that when I saw your name, I'd be seeing a number of RPGs listed.

My absolute favorite of all time is....

Oh wait, we're talking in game music. Not game soundtracks.

Well, I'm game for FF6. There really wasn't a piece of music in that game that didn't sound out of place.

Runner Up: Hm... I'll say that probably next up would be GTA:VC.

However, this (thread/question) depends on if having music that is from the time period the game is set in (already created), or rather if this is dependent on totally from scratch material. If it's from scratch, I gotta say that my Runner Up would then be Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2).

Vice City has songs by Slayer, A Flock Of Seagulls, Megadeth, Quiet Riot, and Michael Jackson.

...that's all I need to say "Vice City."

FF6. Lots of other games have great music, but no other game is anywhere near as consistant as FF6. There's not a bad piece of music to be found in that game.

That commercial featuring "I ran" is so awesome -- the music fits it perfectly...

Vice City is set in the 80's and DOESN'T have Guns N' Roses...

Lucky they redeemed themselves with some MJ..

For me, Metal Gear Solid 2's main theme blows anything else i've heard in any other video game away, it just gives off an amazing feeling that fits the epic of a game that follows it.

I also loved heaps of Sega tunes, namely those from Streets of Rage series, Sonic The Hedgehog & Golden Axe.

I dig this thread.

GTA:VC is set in 1986, so therefore no G'n'R, as Appetite was released in '87, IIRC.

Would've been fun to have some Slippery When Wet-era Bon Jovi on there though. Doing a drive-by with 'Raise Your Hands' or 'Let It Rock' blaring out would have been fabulously cheesy.

To stay on-topic, my favourite game music would have to be Sonic CD (the European/Japanese music was the shiznit), Sonic Adventure, MGS2 (so good I did a metal version of the theme tune), an old C64 Tetris clone called ATA, the GTA series...there's a lot of good game music out there.

Edit: Oh, and after re-reading UYI's post, it reminded me how good the tunes on the Streets Of Rage games were. Yuzo Koshrio is a fecking genius.

Personally I loved the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme especially in the scene where Octacon goes to the helicoptor. What I didn't like was the fact the game had endless amounts of cutscenes after that scene and blew the power the music brang.

Oh and by the way if someone knows where to get the cannon fodder intro music "war never been so much fun", pm me please

Yeah, the MGS2 main theme is one of my all time favorite pieces of game music, and it combines with the graphics to create a truly epic intro. The only other game intro I've seen that's close is the Chrono Cross intro, which also has amazing music.

I'm not kidding when I say this, the music in sonic the hedgehog for genesis/mega drive is some ofthe best music that was ever produced in the 1990s. Listen to it.

Yeah, I realised that about 3 minutes (Jamal? Rosie?) after i posted that.

Eh, can't be perfect ALL the time.

Most anything by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono), and Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, Shinobi) is brilliant.

Though not from one of the aforementioned composers, one of my favorites is Killer Instinct. Best music ever in a fighting game, in my book.

I must also say the gameboy advance version of 'voodoo child' for Hogan is fucking funny. And I cannot stress how good the music in sonic the hedgehog really really is. So *bump*

The music in the first Sonic is classic stuff (not to discredit the rest of the titles in the series, as nearly all of it rules). It's one of the few games that really stands as the epitome of Genesis music for me. Green Hill Zone, brilliant. Marble Zone, awesomeness.

I'm such a mark for the sound chip used in the Genesis. Yeah, it depends on the composer, and the SNES could produce cleaner sound, but there was a certain distinct sound you could only get from the Yamaha FM synths (love those harsh leads and thick basses).

Seiken Densetsu 3's opening theme is one of my favorites. *thinks*

Other than that..off the top of my head I'd have to say Halo.
