Guest Stunt Granny Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 It occured to me awhile back that every PPV for the last 5 years has been headlined by Triple H, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, and/or The Rock. The last PPV NOT to involve any of them in the Main Event was DX '97 (HBK vs. Shamrock). Let me lay it out on the line for you all. Here is ever PPV Main Event after DX and by Main Event I mean last match on the card. As for the Royal Rumble, one of the four has either won the match or been the runner up. It's quite staggering. Royal Rumble 1998: Shawn Micheals vs. The Undertaker No Way Out of Texas Steve Austin, Cactus Jack, Chainsaw Charlie, and Owen Hart vs. Triple H, Road Dogg, Billy Gunn, and Savio Vega. Wrestlemania XIV Shawn Micheals vs. Steve Austin Unforgiven Steve Austin vs. Dude Love Over the Edge Steve Austin vs. Dude Love King of the Ring '98 Steve Austin vs. Kane Fully Loaded Steve Austin and The Undertaker vs. Kane and Mankind SummerSlam '98 Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker Break Down Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker vs. Kane Judgement Day The Undertaker vs. Kane Survivor Series '98 The Rock vs. Mankind Rock Bottom Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker Royal Rumble '99 Royal Rumble Winner: Vince McMahon Runner Up: Steve Austin St. Valentines Day Massacre Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon Wrestlemania XV Steve Austin vs. The Rock Backlash Steve Austin vs. The Rock Over the Edge '99 Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker King of the Ring '99 Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon Fully Loaded '99 Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker SummerSlam '99 Steve Austin vs. Triple H vs. Mankind Unforgiven '99 The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Mankind vs. Kane vs. Big Show vs. The British Bulldog No Mercy Steve Austin vs. Triple H Survivor Series '99 The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Big Show Armageddon Triple H vs. Vince McMahon Royal Rumble '00 Royal Rumble Winner: The Rock Runner up: Big Show No Way out '00 Triple H vs. Cactus Jack Wrestlemania 2000 Triple H vs. The Rock vs. Big Show vs. Mick Foley Backlash '00 Triple H vs. The Rock Judgement Day '00 Triple H vs. The Rock King of the Ring '00 Triple H, Vince McMahon, and Shane McMahon vs. The Rock, The Undertaker, and Kane Fully Loaded '00 The Rock vs. Chris Benoit SummerSlam '00 The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Kurt Angle Unforgiven '00 The Rock vs. The Undertaker vs. Kane vs. Chris Benoit No Mercy '00 The Rock vs. Kurt Angle Survivor Series '00 Steve Austin vs. Triple H Armageddon '00 Steve Austin vs. The Rock vs. The Undertaker vs. Rikishi vs. Kurt Angle vs. Triple H Royal Rumble '01 Royal Rumble Winner: Steve Austin Runner up: Kane No Way Out '01 The Rock vs. Kurt Angle Wrestlemania X-Seven The Rock vs. Steve Austin Backlash '01 Steve Austin and Triple H vs. The Undertaker and Kane Judgement Day '01 Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker King of the Ring '01 Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho vs. Chris Benoit InVasion Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, The Undertaker, Kane, and Chris Jericho vs. Booker T, Diamond Dallas Page, Rhyno, Bubba Ray Dudley, and D-Von Dudley SummerSlam '01 The Rock vs. Booker T Unforgiven '01 Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle No Mercy '01 Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle vs. Rob Van Dam Survivor Series '01 The Rock, Chris Jericho, The Undertaker, Kane, and Big Show vs. Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, and Shane McMahon Vengeance Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho Royal Rumble '02 Royal Rumble Winner: Triple H Runner up: Kurt Angle No Way Out '02 Steve Austin vs. Chris Jericho Wrestlemania X-8 Triple H vs. Chris Jericho Backlash '02 Triple H vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan Judgement Day '02 The Undertaker vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan King of the Ring '02 Triple H vs. The Undertaker Vengeance '02 The Rock vs. The Undetaker vs. Kurt Angle SummerSlam '02 The Rock vs. Brock Lesnar Unforgiven '02 The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar No Mercy '02 The Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar Survivor Series '02 Triple H vs. Shawn Micheals vs. Rob Van Dam vs. Chris Jericho vs. Kane vs. Booker T Armageddon '02 Triple H vs. Shawn Micheals Royal Rumble '03 Royal Rumble Winner: Brock Lesnar Runner up: The Undertaker No Way Out '03 The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan So there you have it 5 years, same 4 guys. If the WWE goes ahead and puts Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle in the Main Event of Wrestlemania (which I am beginning to doubt) that would snap this 5+ year reign of the Fab 4. But if the WWE decides not to do it and make the ME Rock vs. Austin as rumored, how much longer until e see some one who is not one of them in the main event of PPV's?
Guest Edwin MacPhisto Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Considering where the 6-man was on tonight's card before Rock, Austin, and HHH's respective appearances, I kind of doubt this trend will be ending.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 That's fucked up. Especially when you think that all of those people have missed some significant time over that stretch. Austin out a year, HHH out a year, Taker missed alot of time in 2000, Rock gone alot for movies. Damn!
Guest Austin3164life Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 The hard thing is, those four have drawn a lot of numbers over the past four years, especially Austin and Rock. Vince goes where the money is at.
Guest ISportsFan Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 The hard thing is, those four have drawn a lot of numbers over the past four years, especially Austin and Rock. Vince goes where the money is at. I'm just thinking about all the money Undertaker has ever drawn and all the money HHH drew in 2002, and it makes me think that it'll never end because Vince knows how much HHH and UT mean to his business. Guest Downhome Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Holly shit, THAT is a hell of an eye opener. Thanks for pointing that out, as I now have some more pointless trivia!
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 I'm pretty skeptical about who was able to draw money. Clearly Austin did. Rock was able to keep those ratings...but never really added anyone new. And HHH has been at the top for great ratings in 2000 and also for the last year where business tanked and he was the only "top" guy around. Taker never drew shit prior to Austin. So I don't think he's worth spit.
Guest Choken One Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 I never realized that... Jeebus Christ...I will go with KOTR to be the First without the Fantastic Four...Brock/Angle II will go down...
Guest humongous2002 Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 That's why at Mania it should be about passing the torch to the new WWE generation instead of giving us the same shit over and over.
Guest JMA Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Woah. I wonder what Vince would do if all four men were injured.
Guest caboose Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Thats an odd but telling fact. WWE = WCW with different letters.
Guest The Tino Standard Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 That's why at Mania it should be about passing the torch to the new WWE generation instead of giving us the same shit over and over. The "New Generation"? WWE would endlessly pound you over the head with a club if they saw those words. Bad flashbacks, man.
Guest godthedog Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 this clearly will not happen. i'd be VERY surprised if rock and/or austin weren't in the ME.
Guest DeputyHawk Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Interesting stats. Tallied up there is obviously a huge gulf between the 'Big Four' and the rest, too. Guys like Kane, Jericho, Show & Booker will never headline consistently enough to break the door of the Millionaire's Club (ha!) down, the most likely to do so being Angle, Lesnar and (god willing) Benoit, although more than likely now Goldberg. Whatever, it's not a trend that can continue indefinitely. Rock is obviously going to Hollywood, while Austin, HHH & Taker are all on the verge of physical breakdown. Fiar play to them, they've all had great runs. Guest The Hamburglar Posted February 24, 2003 Report Posted February 24, 2003 Considering he only started main eventing in 2000, Angle's up there for number of PPV headlining appearances. He's clearly the one certain successor to the top four main eventers.
Guest DeputyHawk Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 dammit, my obsessive compulsive list-making disorder just wouldn't let me sleep. it was as i had feared. this 'fantastic four' haven't just headlined the most wwf ppv's over the last five years, but have headlined the most wwf ppv's period, just keeping hogan, bret & shawn at bay. that's some going, though surely of these seven 'legends', one seems considerably less worthhhy of his spot in history than the others... Guest D'Lo White Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 I know he has not been in the WWF for a large amount of time. But seeing Flair's name tied with the likes of Mabel, Typhoon, Koko, Roma, Rooster and Taylor is quite scary.
Guest Kahran Ramsus Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 When did Perfect main event a non-Rumble PPV? From memory... Survivor Series 1988, Team Snake vs. Team Andre (Second last) Wrestlemania V, Perfect vs. Blazer (Midcard) Summerslam 1989, Perfect vs. Rooster (Midcard) Survivor Series 1989, Team Piper vs. Team Rude (Second to last) Wrestlemania VI, Perfect vs. Beefcake (Midcard) Summerslam 1990, Perfect vs. Tornado (Second) Survivor Series 1990, Team Warrior vs. Team Perfect (Opener) Wrestlemania VII, Perfect vs. Bossman (Upper Midcard) Summerslam 1991, Perfect vs. Bret (Second) Survivor Series 1992, Perfect Team vs. Razor/Flair (Midcard, but billed main event) Wrestlemania IX, Perfect vs. Luger (Upper Midcard) King of the Ring 1993, Tournament Quarters & Semis Summerslam 1993, Perfect vs. HBK (Lower Midcard) He never had a Royal Rumble match outside of the Rumble itself, so never wrestled in an actual PPV match after his match with Michaels.
Guest DeputyHawk Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 the original criteria used for main eventing a ppv (ie, the last match on the card) included winner & runner-up of the rumble, for the years the rumble itself closed the show. i used that same criteria, and perfect was runner-up to hogan in 90. he had apparently been promised the win too, but that's another story.

True. But had the WWF been running 12 PPV's a year since 1985 Hogan would have far and away the most Main Events ever. You could say the same for Bret who was a main eventer 2 whole years before the WWF went to 12 PPV's a year.
Guest DeputyHawk Posted February 25, 2003 Report Posted February 25, 2003 oh sure, but then again if they had been running ppv's since the 60's bruno sammartino would be the no.1 guy. they haven't. it is the ppv's which will be remembered by most fans, and the austin/rock/taker trifecta (+1) have proved to be the shit. bruno was the king of msg, hogan the king of tv, these guys have ruled pay-per-view.
