Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 We got a new computer a few days ago (Hewett-Packard...prolly not spelled right) with Windows XP. Right around the time of NWO last night, it just...froze. After the 'HP Invent' screen when I restarted, I got this message: "Operation Not Found" or something like that. I figured, no prob, I'll just use the System Recovery like I did earlier in the day for the same problem. So, I restarted, and pressed F10.........nothing happened. I can get to 'Setup' from that screen, and the F10 button works in there, so I know that button works. I tried calling the support line for HP, but the phone number didn't work. Can anyone help? ((I'm writing this on a school computer))
Guest MrRant Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Try tapping F10 but if that doesn't work you can call 208-323-2551
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 I tap F10. I hold down F10. Either way, after about a few seconds, I get the keyboard beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. I TRIED calling that. I got the auto message of "Please put in the area code" shit. Um...hello? Isn't 208 the area code? And if it isn't...THEN WHAT THE FUCK IS?!
Guest TheGame2705 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Did you dial 1+Area Code? Honestly I know what to do with ME system recovery but not XP.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Wow, if it's a brand new computer and you've already had to do system recovery twice, that's not a good sign about the future of that brand new computer. Have you tried booting it in safe mode?
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted February 24, 2003 Booting in safe mode? Don't think you can do it with this one. Anyway, it works now. System Recovery didn't work, mom said, but..... *shrug* Hey, as long as it works. And the good thing is that we didn't lose any files. Lucky us, eh? Did you dial 1+Area Code? Yeah, I added a one to the 208 number above....still didn't work.
Guest Lethargic Report post Posted February 25, 2003 I just hit F8 while it's booting up and it gives me a whole page full of various booting option including safe mode.
Guest DrTom Report post Posted February 25, 2003 There's a little-publicized toll-free number for HP support, for both personal and business PCs and peripherals. 1-800-633-3600
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted February 26, 2003 Got a question: Since the damned thing sometimes messes up when we turn it on (we joke that it's PMSing), would it be okay to just use 'sleep/stand by' instead of turning it off?
Guest MrRant Report post Posted February 26, 2003 If it's brand new and doing that then HP will probably replace it. Minus shipping of course.
Yuna_Firerose 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2003 According to the guy at Wal-Mart, the hard drive crashed. So, we took it back, got our $,1000-something money back, and went to Circuit City. Instead of spending all that money, we just used about $800 for the tower, which comes with keyboard, speakers, and mouse (laser-mouse! ...yes, I'm easily excited). We figured that made more sense since we have a good monitor.
