Affirmative Action

Anyway, I feel in a perfect society AA wouldn't exist. I wish it wasn't necessary but it should be in place so QUALIFIED minorities can get their foot in the door. As a Black male, I don't want to be look down as being a "Token" but if I have qualifications for the job it wouldn't be me being a "Token." I feel if AA was gone the "good ole' boys" or the "Powers That Be" might go back to their discriminating ways. Racist people like Lott or Name discrimination study made me support AA more.

Shit, some people (mostly white) have a hard time pronouncing my name which isn't difficult to pronounce (Antione Btw) why should that keep me from getting a job if im qualified to do. How do guys know that when you got rejected from the job or school that you applied for, it went to a minority? Did the employer or school admissions (sp?) flat out told you that or you guys are just assuming that?

Hypocrites like Bush make me laugh, because he benefitted from AA, and now he's against it.

Please don't bring Lott into this. He was a media scapegoat and took the fall for something he never even said. I don't remember the part of his speech where he said "And now I'm going to talk about how I hate black people." He was at a Strom Thurmond Kiss Ass Party and he kissed his ass...just worded it wrong. If he was racist, I think it would have been obvious before now.

I'm leaning towards the belief that businesses and corporations worth a damn don't hire / fire based on their ability to pronounce someone's name. If that were the case, our economy would be in a lot wose trouble than it is. Whites can have hard-to-pronounce names as well, so that argument doesn't stand well on its own.

I'm not assuming anything when I say that it doesn't make things level. It's discrimination that's protected by law. It causes resentment and only helps to reinforce whatever racial prejudices were already there.

And how did Bush benefit from AA?

How do you pronounce this? How do people pronounce it incorrectly? (I think I know the answers, but I'm just curious to see if my line of thinking is correct.)

My take on AA

As a black person and a citizen of the United States I am for AA. Personally I do not like it since I will be looked down on at college or at a job which uses AA.

I would want to be hired on my merits and achievements. However, AA is still nesscary in America.

AA prevents the discrimination against minorites in hiring and school acceptances. I kinda feel reaussured that at least my foot is in the door and that I wont be turned down because of bigots that hire or accept people into college.

As Americans we have come a long since the early 20th century. But it doesnt mean this society is perfect and there is equality everywhere. There still is general mistrust and hate between the races in this country.

Hopefully we as a people will achieve some sort of racial equality in our lifetime. I see there still is a lot of sterotypes being used, even in this thread (ethnic names for example, not all black parents name their kids ethnically) Having parents not name their kids the way they want to so they can have the white, acceptable name is definatly not going to solve the problem. (Some Guy, just because the names are strange to you, doesnt mean they are not common to some people. What im trying to say is that we have come a long way but we still have a long way to go.

Another thing I would like to comment on is why white people hate AA? I dont see it as a form of racism. I see AA as a way of ensuring equality. if a few white people get stepped on, thats life. Nobody said life was fair.

True.

I would want to be hired on my merits and achievements. However, AA is still nesscary in America.

Well with AA you can never be sure of it. You might just be teh one black guy hired so Jesse Jackson won't come extorting.

AA prevents the discrimination against minorites in hiring and school acceptances.

Yeah, by promoting discrimination against Whites and Orientals. Good plan.

I kinda feel reaussured that at least my foot is in the door and that I wont be turned down because of bigots that hire or accept people into college.

There are bigots everywhere and of all races. Minorities are probably more racist against whites than the opther way around.

As Americans we have come a long since the early 20th century.

Very true.

But it doesnt mean this society is perfect and there is equality everywhere.

Very true. What is equality? Should very business have 12.7% blacks, 13& Hispanics, etc... Or should they have teh best workers they can get? And if that happens to be virtually all black like the NBA or 13% black like MLB than so be it. I don't begrudge the NBA for having too many blacks in relation to the US population, why do soem blacks begrudge other businesses when there are "too many whites, and not enough blacks." What is "too many" and what is "enough blacks"?

I see there still is a lot of sterotypes being used, even in this thread (ethnic names for example, not all black parents name their kids ethnically)

Black people tend to invent names for their kids, which is fine if that's what they want but that's not an ethnic thing. They choose to make up names and that may hinder their kids chances in life (it shouldn't, but it might) so why do it?

Ethnic names would be a Hispanic named Juan or Pedro, those are truly ethnic names. "Moheesa" is not, that's just a made up name.

(Some Guy, just because the names are strange to you, doesnt mean they are not common to some people. What im trying to say is that we have come a long way but we still have a long way to go.

The names are strange, they are made up. If I named my kid HADIVATION or something wouldn't that be strange?

Another thing I would like to comment on is why white people hate AA? I dont see it as a form of racism. I see AA as a way of ensuring equality. if a few white people get stepped on, thats life. Nobody said life was fair.

Now let's look at this. You want equality which is presumably fair, but then you say that you don't care if a few white people get stepped on because life isn't fair.

Now then if I said, "Why do black people hate discrimination? I don't see it as a form of racism. I see discrimination as a was of ensuring that white people will get jobs. if a few black people get stepped on, that's life. Nobody said life was fair."

You might get offended by that.

Why would I support a racist program that is designed to hurt my race?

Here is a question. Would any white males on the board refuse to accept a job offer if they knew for a fact that a better qualified minority was turned down simply because he/she was a minority?

That's an arbitrary question of personal morals, has nothing to do with whether or not AA should continue, if it's justified, or if it's even protected under the Constitution (which it's not).

Asking that is like asking "If you found $100, would you keep it or turn it into the police?"

Its pronounced Ant-i (silent)-one (example: Antwone Fisher, Antoine Walker or keep saying Anti-one repeatly fast) But, people tend to call me Anthony, Antonio, Antony, and Anton. When I try to correct people like my Manager at my job who calls me Anton and when I corrected him he still called me Anton which pissed me off. I thought about changing my name but I thought fuck that, my mom name me that because of a her friend (mother figure) requested it to her.

Anyway, to the person that ask me how Bush benefitted from AA? Simple like I said this before he benefitted because of his Father's alumni status, since Dubya was an average student with his family having money he got accepted to Yale, when a average student that comes from a family with no money or wasn't alumn would have no chance of getting into a Private School like Yale.

Cawthon, you have a point about with Whites having difficult names that are hard to pronounce, but its also about name association as well. When you think of a name like "Tyrone or DeShaun" you would automatically think of black names right? But companies who have shady practices on hiring might look at that on the resume and won't hire them. They did study on this recently of the "White names" had 50% more responses than Black or any other ethincity name, and all had the same QUALIFICATIONS on the resumes.

That's not AA at all. That's just having connections. If you wanted a job somewhere and you knew someone that worked there and they helped you get that job, is that Affirmative Action? No. That's just the result of networking.

No, he didn't have the qualifications to get into a school like Yale he didn't get in by his own merits or achievements, who knows how many other qualified students who had a better GPA's than Bush got turn down . So why is he's against it? Since Bush thinks thats AA is all about so therefore he's a hypocrite. But, with his father power and money he got in and almost partied his opportunity away. A "C" average student could know anybody in that school, if he or his family didn't have money or power I doubt he could get in.

Again, that's not an example of Affirmative Action. Yale was not forced to bring him in, they weren't given a quota by the government that they should enroll 1 member of the Bush family that semester. That had nothing to do with race and it wasn't something forced by the U.S. government.

Not that it has any bearing in this thread but I don't know all the specifics of Bush's school years, nor does anyone else here, so I'm not going to make comments one way or the other. He did well on his SATs - he's not a retard (as if being President wouldn't disprove that to begin with).

Well, people mispronounce the name because it's not spelled the way that most people spell the name pronounced 'AN twahn' (which, of course, would be 'Antoine'). Since it's spelled differently, people do have every right to assume it's pronounced differently.

I mean, it's unreasonable for your manager to get it wrong, but according to English phonetics, your name is AN tee on. You can't hold a nonstandard spelling against people.

Ace has a good point. Your name is mispelled, you can't get pissed off when someone mispronounces a mispelled word.

My name is Allen, "Allen" is convetnionally the spelling of a last name and in my case is was some friend of my grandparents last name. 99% of the time people spell my name "Alan" or "Allan", or "Alen" or whatever, I symply try to correct them, I don't get pissed. It's an honest mistake. My and and my Dad's name is Charles Allen Roberts (Jr./Sr.) and my dad's brother mispelled my name for years. SHit happens. What does irritate me is when people called me "Robert" or "Rob" or "Robbie" or "Bob" etc... as though my name is the only exception to the "first name last, last name first" rule on attendence sheets in school.

My last name is Baughman. Do you know how many people have ever gotten the name right or spelled it right? I can think of 1 person on the first try in 22 years.

It happens deal with it.

That's what people try to say. It's a German name so you have to pronounce the GH in the name as a F.
