Guest tank_abbott Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I read Scott keith's new book over the last 2 days, and I have to say I'm disappointed. I figured based on how much Scott was implying in his rants about tearing into people without regard for their feelings, that we'd get some substantial bitching in the book. It didn't happen, and there wasn't even much in the way of inside info (I learned a Austin rib on Christian prompted the "What?" gimmick) And not much else. Pretty boring read. Maybe in 10 years it will have sentimental value, but as of right now its pretty boring. Your Thoughts?
Guest MrRant Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 Eh... it was like reading a copy/paste job of his rants and printing them out. No added opinions or anything. And it should be called a Fan's History of the WWE, not Professional Wrestling since he didn't cover anything really except the WWE. Pretty weak.
Guest the 1inch punch Posted March 2, 2003 Report Posted March 2, 2003 I learned a Austin rib on Christian prompted the "What?" gimmick It wasnt a rib If you look through the Slashwrestling archives, what happened was the Austin borrowed Christian's phone and raing the voicemail, which was Christiansaying "What........what...etc Austin, hearing the first what, said What back, only to hear the secong what, This went on for a while
Guest BifEverchad Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 The hell with Scott Keith. I have NO time for his bitchy, cynical 'rants' anymore.
Guest Bruiser Chong Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 If you've seen Austin's WHAT?! DVD, then you'd hear about that thing with Christian there. People were pretty disapointed with Buzz... but I liked it alright. Pretty informative and I'll have to check this one out to form an opinion on it.
Guest The Superstar Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 My favorite part was when he was writing about the InVasion... The WCW Invasion was kickstarted...with Mike Awesome pinning Rhyno to win the WWF Hardcore Title. Don't shit your pants with excitement! that totally got me.
Guest Annoyed Grunt Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Didn't Lance Storm superkicking Saturn start the invasion anyway?
Guest The Superstar Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Didn't Lance Storm superkicking Saturn start the invasion anyway? Well that wasn't an exact quote...something like that
Guest crandamaniac Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I almost got this book, but got the Brain's book instead today? Did I make a smart choice?
Guest Retro Rob Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I almost got this book, but got the Brain's book instead today? Did I make a smart choice? Based on what I've heard, you did.
Guest starvenger Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 My thoughts: - if you're looking for some of the basics of pro wrestling, you're SOL. Mind you, he notes this in the intro, but making the book a little less smarkish would probably have been a good idea. - he also notes that it's HIS recollection of how things went down, and this hurts things as sometimes the facts get mixed up with fiction. A little more research wouldn't have hurt. - the book reminds me a lot of a radio show on Edge 102 in Toronto called "The Ongoing History of New Music". The format focuses on something specific each week, and plays some music relating to the topic. Keith lays out things much the same way, and it reads fairly well because of it. However... - the match reviews suck. Cutting and pasting can only go so far, and he's got references in there that make no sense unless you read the whole PPV/show rant. But... - the asides are kinda fun. You get tidbits that you'd probably have never gotten anywhere else, although the validity of said tidbits is debatable. Anyways, overall it's a good read, but in an "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader" kinda way, if you know what I mean. To use Keith's version of star ratings, it's about **.
Guest Karnage Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Does he say Bonzo Gonzo a lot throughout the book?
Guest RepoMan Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I'm about half way through, and I'm fairly disapointed so far. As noted, it just seems like he copy/pasted his rants and q and a columns. He jumps all over the place at times, and he needed to be a little more ditached from his opinion for once.
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 His publisher is sending me a review copy, so when I get through with it, I most likely will be reviewing it for the site. With that said, Starvenger, Keith pretty much covers the basics of wrestling in general in the Buzz book. Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I'm still waiting for my review copy as well. I bought the book and returned it and it's nothing special. It's WAY too short and the cut and pasting of his reviews gets annoying after a while. His take on the Owen Hart situation made him come off like a bitter and sad man and he sometimes takes unessecary potshots at people just to be funny and cool. Plus I knew almost everything in that book already. The book is more for people who are newer fans I think
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Bob, when did you send out for your review copy? I just sent mine out and was told that it would be sent priority mail, but I've heard that others have yet to receive it. Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I asked for one a while ago. I told the guy what I did for 411 and he seemed skeptical so I gave him more information and told what him I would do with the book. He replied with: Okay. So who knows if I'm getting one
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Ah...I'd follow up on that if I were you. Did you ever end up getting anything from Suncoast BTW? Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Nah- Before they were Superstars just didn't look appealing to me and all the other DVDs I could get cheaper in Canada
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I found a DVD Easter Egg site that said that on the Before They Were Superstars 2, there's an easter egg where you can see John Cena's debut of his rap gimmick at the Halloween party. Cena vs. Angle plus the origin of the Rap God? I must buy. Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Cena v. Angle is only 6 minutes long though. I've seen Jericho's debut match (I remember watching it and going: What a pussy) While rap Cena does sound appealing- Armageddon 2002 also has Cena rapping and three awesome matches
Guest starvenger Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 With that said, Starvenger, Keith pretty much covers the basics of wrestling in general in the Buzz book. Well, he kinda does but then again he doesn't really. It's a history of sorts but it's more like a hastily put together rant on people and wrestling feds. Personally, I don't really care, since I know all the terms he's using, but making a book a little more accessible to Joe WWE Fan wouldn't hurt too much. And to be honest I'd use "Buzz" for toilet paper but the paper stock chafes my skin...
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 3 awesome matches? This coming from a man who thinks SummerSlam '93 is a great show, but anyway... Back on topic, those of you who have read it, have you also read The Buzz on Professional Wrestling? Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 3 awesome matches? This coming from a man who thinks SummerSlam '93 is a great show, but anyway... Back on topic, those of you who have read it, have you also read The Buzz on Professional Wrestling? Dames The three awesome matches- Eddy v. Benoit BookDust v. Commonwealth Connection v. Chris-tain v. Dudleyz Eddy v. Edge v. Angle v. Benoit I think Summerslam is a good show NOT a great show. It has nostalgic value in that it's one of the first tapes I ever bought and it's a good show besides that. Buzz was okay- too many errors in there for me to take it seriously
Guest DrTom Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 Dames, Bob... what's the email address to write for a review copy? I wouldn't mind getting a hold of one. Maybe Dames and I could even do a tag-team review for TSM.
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 (edited) [email protected] (Note: Sorry Bob, but I don't think he'd want to get swamped by everyone on the board asking for review copys - Dames) If he turns you down- do what I did. I bought the book and then returned it when I was finished Edited March 3, 2003 by The Dames
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 The three awesome matches- Eddy v. Benoit BookDust v. Commonwealth Connection v. Chris-tain v. Dudleyz Eddy v. Edge v. Angle v. Benoit I think Summerslam is a good show NOT a great show. It has nostalgic value in that it's one of the first tapes I ever bought and it's a good show besides that. Buzz was okay- too many errors in there for me to take it seriously Eddy vs. Benoit - Yes Tag Title 4 way - Good, not great. Eddy vs. Benoit vs. Angle vs. Edge - Yes, but technically not on the Armaggedon show. I see your point though. Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 [email protected]???? Is SK's book p0rn??????? Sorry about that Dames. Dr. Tom- If you want I'll pm it to you. Regarding the tag title match- I love 3/8 of the guys in there and seeing BookDust win the titles AND win with the Bookend was my biggest markout moment of 2002. I also found the Chris-tain v. BookDust part to be excellent
The Dames Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 The Dudleys & Commonwealth Connection didn't seem like they even belonged in the match as it was just an obvious set up to BookDust vs. Vitamin C (That's what I call them in EWR). It felt like too much filler before the main portion of the match. The false finishes were great, but BookDust winning the titles was way overdue and when you look back on it, it's sad just how long they held onto them considering how long it took them to get. Dames
Guest bob_barron Posted March 3, 2003 Report Posted March 3, 2003 I agree with you there Dames. I didn't mind the first portion- The double fist flop-n-fly was entertaining as hell. It does suck looking back realising they only lasted three weeks but I don't think it takes away from the much itself.
