First album sold 15 million, second album sold 3 million, last album sold 1.5 million. You do the math. Terrence Trent D'Arby: Never say your second album is better then the Beatles Sgt. Pepper! At The Drive In: Were hyped as the next Rage Against the Machine and quietly broke up instead Oasis: A one time semi-talented Beatles ripoff that looked like it was on the verge of a major breakthrough. Now they're playing theaters and clubs due to their massive egos. Black Crows: Sure they were together for quite a bit of time. But considering their first album sold six million copies and none of their other records even went platinum I'd consider them a bust. Any of the Jacksons besides Michael and Janet even though none of them were that talented. EDIT: I made a funny on the title, can a mod fix that or am I gonna look like a huge dumb ass to the entire board?

ATDI was on the BBoys label (Grand Royal). The band had been together for many years before their breakthrough album. They broke up, nothing more. They didn't fizzle out, or crack under the pressure. These guys would have been right up there last year the "The" bands. Sad thing is, they were 10X better than all of those other bands. They truly were great. Now they've split into Sparta and Mars Volta. Two amazing bands for the price of one. I like it. If any of you can, go see Mars on the RHCP tour this summer.
Guest godthedog Posted March 5, 2003 Report Posted March 5, 2003 the biggest bust i can think of is the sex pistols. they shoot to the top on an enormous wave of popularity, with this promise of rebelling against everything & changing music forever...then break up after recording exactly ONE record. the beastie boys might as well have broken up after 1994. they've released one album in the last 8 years, and it sucked. lots of revisionist fans who hate courtney love will say that hole always sucked, but 'live through this' was a damn good record & the band showed some awesome promise until the love media monster started growing at their expense around 95. after that, the band was basically a joke.

Other than that, it's one of my personal favorites--snarky rhymes, pop sensibility, and a real variety of sound. I put it really close up with Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head and consider it a real career highlight.

Their beats were much more adventerous than CYH and IC, but not as wild as PB. It was still a straight up Beasties record. If you never liked them, I'd understand hating the record. But I can't understand how one hates the record after being a long term fan.

The Strokes got loads and loads of hype as "The saviors of rock", but they pretty much died out and aren't really mainstream anymore. I'm sure that you'll just say that they're working on a new album, but how many Strokes videos can you recall? When was the last time you heard a Strokes song on the radio? Same thing with The Vines. When they released their CD, the Rolling Stones issue with them on the cover claimed "Rock is Back". I went out and bought their CD after reading how they were a mixture of Nirvana and the Beatles. And you know what? The CD sucked. Quite possibly the worst CD I have ever bought, right up there with "Appetite for Reconstruction", the GNR remix album. And The Hives. The Hives released all of 1 song? I think I recall seeing a video for a second one, and they played another song at the MTV Movie awards, but WTF happened to them? What happened the whole "Swedish Explosion" that we were promised? WHAT THE FUCK?

But really, regardless of your opinions on the bands you mentioned, whether or not you hear them on the radio or see them in a magazine isn't really correlative to if they're good or not. I wouldn't really consider those bands to be busts, or won't until they come out with second releases. Granted, the Vines are already nothing special to me, but I do enjoy both the Hives and Strokes in moderate doses. I'm interested to see how the sophomore American releases go; if it's just going to be another 35 minutes of Swedish crunch n' whammy, or an evolution of sorts.

Plus, the fact their drummer got more press than their music doe to his relationship with Drew. I respect them more from taking a step back, and allowing their music to stand for itself. Personally, I like it. I could understand how people wouldn't though. IMO, they are heaps better than any of the other 'the' rock bands over the past year. Much much better.

That's a good one, and I agree witht that assesment of Live Through This. I'll also throw Oasis out there. They got pretty huge after releasing two very good albums in my opinion. Then they started putting out junk and are entirely irrelevant today.

I thought after Intergalactic, the frantic pace of the record slows, but they become more experimental. I used to think the same as you, but now I've come to enjoy the wild instrumentals and whacked out soundscapes.

I'd say the Rolling Stones, because they just kept releasing crap song after crap song to the point they stopped being cared about. But their concerts are still huge, so who can say? but quality-wise they are definitely the biggest busts.

Do you base if a band is a bust or not by record sales alone? I wouldn't. Look at bands like the Grateful Dead, Phish, Rush, and hell even the Rolling Stones, rarely ever sold more then a couple million, if that. 2 million a bust? Considering the majority of whats released is lucky to sell 10-15 thousand I'd say that's an excellant number.

If any of you can, go see Mars on the RHCP tour this summer. Glad to see that I'm not the only fan of these bands on this forum. Sparta is truly amazing, and I'm patiently waiting for the Mars Volta to release their album. Wiretap Scars is an excellent album and hopefully Mars Volta will be just as good.
